Its pretty variable (you can use most fruit, and as its strained you don't need to be too fussy about preparing them thankfully):

2kg fruit

100ml water (for blackberries/soft fruit - use 600ml for blackcurrants, apples, hard fruit - 300ml for plums/stone fruit).

Bring slowly to boil, and mush with wooden spoon or potato masher, cook gently till juices are flowing (may take up to 45 mins depending on type of fruit, but fast for blackberries).

Strain juice through one of your babies handy muslin cloths (although even I try and make it a clean one lol) or a fine tea towel which you have scalded (immersed in boiling water).

Measure juice in a jug. For every 1 litre add 700g sugar (or to taste - sorry about teeth rotting!). Heat to dissolve sugar then pour into sterilised bottles, leaving a 1cm gap for expansion. I also freeze it in plastic milk bottles. It lasts ages in the fridge though.

Try it with half apple and half blackberries (saves you picking so many!) - no need to core & peel them, just chuck them in, or plums, damsons, currents, rhubarb etc.

    • I understand that, but I can't really grasp how it works in practice, but never mind 😵‍💫
    • It's local independent shops supporting one another.
    • Adding my recommendation for Niko too. Found his number on here and he came out at short notice on a busy weeknight to help us with a kitchen sink issue that had flooded our kitchen that day. Really helpful, responsive and went out of his way to fit us in and help us out. Very reasonably priced too - would thoroughly recommend!
    • Looks like it! Though according to the OP, they are "golden, hand-crimped parcels  packed with flavour" 😀 I don't understand. Admittedly my brain is functioning at a very low level at the moment. Does that mean various local shops get together and agree to offer a discount to anyone who shows them a receipt from one of the other ones dated the same day? I can't see what's in it for either of them, unless people shop somewhere they wouldn't otherwise have done just to get the discount. Is it for vaguely  linked things, say cheese from a cheese shop, wine from another shop? Showing my age there.  And then suppose it's always the same shop which people go to second to get the discount? What's in it for the first shop? People go there in order to get the discount in the second shop?
