The solar power from Africa seems like a cracking idea to me, and it could really benefit local economies if done correctly.

Ideally it would be part of some "global grid", as discussed on these pages before. So we're not totally reliant on power from any one source. Power would be contributed to this global grid by solar power from Spain and Africa... wave and wind from Scandinavia and Russia... nuclear from France (and Iran!), etc etc.

Why bother when there is more water power around our shores waiting to be harnessed than we need.

Possibly because solar panel technology has the benefit of almost a century of development. There are also some petty funky solar collectors too (the one in Sevilla is very cool).

There have been some interesting advances in wave power but noone has a proven working implementation beyond a prototype. However the urgency is for solutions to have been implemented yesterday.
