Hello,

I?m Ben Maitland, and I?m standing in the council elections for the South Camberwell Ward seat as a Liberal Democrat.

The main point of this post is to ask you what you?d like to see improved in the area. Either directly in the ward or locally as well. Please let me know your thoughts on things which you think need changing.

In my professional life, I am a public sector communications specialist and have worked on some of the biggest issues facing the UK including the NHS and national security. I founded TackleAfrica: a charity which enables young people to protect themselves against HIV. That belief defines the issues I care about most and is why I want to become councillor for South Camberwell - I love this area but think it could still be so much better, especially if we are going to unlock the capacity of everyone who lives here.

I?ve been living locally for years now, and am a big fan of James Barber - having seen the excellent work he?s done in the neighbouring East Dulwich wards. I joined the Liberal Democrats in May this year after our election defeat and decided I wanted to get involved.

Thank you very much,

Ben

Hello Ben,

I am really glad you posted. I live in Copleston Road, which comes under South Camberwell ward.

Main issues for me is:

Saltash - dreadful contracting company who did not provide a good service for me. The company carried out external painting from february this year, till June. My door numbers have been left in the same position since July, wen my door was painted. I have raised a complaint with Southwark Council, but little has happoned. My neighbour on my left is in her early 90's, her back door was not pained, even though I informed saltash more than once. My neighbour on my right is unable to open her windows, after the company painted the windows closed.

My seconfd issue is recycling. I often have my garden waste bin missed by the bin people, which results in contacting the councils contact cerntre.

    • You'd need to get a proper quote (or three) for instance removing a cast iron bath is a very different job from removing an acrylic one. Again what pipe work will be being joined into - matching old imperial pipes with modern metric ones is different from like to like, as is dealing with a copper or an iron distribution system. The amount (area) of retiling required is an issue, as will be the state of the wall behind the tiles. It may of course all be very plain sailing, or not. Have a first look at plumber recommendations on the relevant pages on this site. If it's all easy then 3 days work may be sufficient. But it could be a week if there are snags.
    • Hi. Can anyone suggest a plumber for the job below? Replace bath tub with a shower enclosure, putting pipes to showerhead behind wall, re-titling damaged/removed tiles Also any idea of the costs involved for the labour as we will buy the items required?
    • Aria came round to fix my tub drain when I'd messed up the seal. Came within hours, fixed the tub, and ran a bath to make sure it was okay. Here's where the fun starts. While he was over, I asked him questions about the rest of the plumbing round the house. I had just moved into a Victorian home that was previously being rented. Unsurprisingly, we found another leak in the tub and a drip in the kitchen tap.  He came back the next day to put a better pipe in my bathtub and replace the kitchen sink. Painstakingly figured out how to replace the hard-to-access kitchen sink without cutting through the wood panel with the help of his builder friend, Mark. Answered all my questions and clearly knew his stuff. All this right before Christmas holidays!
