I noticed the other day that the pointing on my chimney stack needs doing. It doesn't look like too big a job. I've got a long enough ladder to get onto the roof so I was thinking of doing it myself. Has anyone else had experience of pointing? Can it be a DIY job or do I need to call someone proper like Dulwich Construction?

Phone a big company if you want to pay a bomb, or do it yourself and make a pig's ear of it.

It needs to be properly raked out, or the new mix won't hold properly. Also the mix needs to contain the correct ratio of waterproofer, or it won't be weatherproof. You need to do it soon, or it will be too cold and wet.

Why not get a local independent builder to do it? I can PM you details if you're keen. :)

Why not employ a 'man'

Y'know, one who shins up ladders an' the likes, whilst you direct and partonise him from the safety of the floor

"There's a good chap, don't know how you do it my man, left a bit but don't fall"

(coz my ruddy car is parked right uner where you'll land)

All the while you could roll your wonderfull stick on moustache into ever pointer waxy points and puff a massive cigar, whilst squinting on your monocle

Later you'd ride your elephant around the grounds whilst having a G&T

Wadda y'reckon Bob ?

Have I over egged it?

Surely the advent of laser eye surgery was the death knell of monocles? Or does one just keep a rose-tinted monocle about oneself these days, for reflection?

Thank you for your advice - I'll might get my long ladder out this weekend and pop up onto the roof and see how bad it is and then decide whether or not I need to a call a chap.

    • Mal, it is related to this issue and if you scroll back a few pages you will see that Brockwell was brought up in relation to this (not by me I hasten to add). Do you not think it seems perfectly reasonable for people to be able to reference a neighbouring event - one that is having a number of challenges not too dissimilar to the ones Gala is having?     These sentences from the BrixtonBuzz article I linked seem very pertinent too:  The concern, they argue, is not just about permits, but about the Council’s repeated failure to follow proper planning processes and its habit of acting in the interests of commercial promoters rather than the local community.   And this: The group is now calling on residents to write to their local MP and councillors, accusing the Council of using legal mechanisms to avoid scrutiny.
    • Mal, like it or not, it does have some bearing on other councils. There was an item about it on Times Radio on Sunday - Kate Borsay, a presenter who lives locally, referenced Peckham Rye in relation to the Brockwell case. As the reporter pointed out, local councils will all be talking to each other and closely following how things unfold. If a precedent is set with Brockwell, other councils will be under greater scrutiny.
    • Why don't you start a new thread about Brockwell Park?  I promise that I won't post on it.
    • 🤣 at the puns. Seriously though, thank you for not assuming he must be lost just because he followed you a long way. Thank you for posting on here rather than  taking him back to your house!
