Reporting Forest Hill road post office in- cash miscounted at till - anyone had a similar situation?

Hi,

Here is what happened to me and I would like to know if anyone has encountered a similar situation.

Yesterday afternoon I went to Forest Hill Road post office||(SE220RR) to post a parcel, whilst at the desk I asked for a ?50 cash, the cash teller took out ?10 notes and counted the cash in front of me and I took it without double checking. My mistake as my two young children were in the shop and my eyes were on them. Later when I looked in my wallet for ?30 I realised that I had only a total of ?40 and one of the ?10 notes was folded in half.

I am 100% sure no-one has tampered with my bag and wallet in the short amount of time it took me to realise.

Today I went back to the post office and asked them to check whether they had a surplus ?10 from the previous day and explained what happened, leaving open the possibility that it could have been a genuine "miscounting" mistake on their behalf.

I was told the manager was not in the shop and I should return tomorrow morning to speak to him about this matter.

Now this is a serious matter and I am not making accusations, to be clear I am pointing out that I have a ?50 receipt in my hands and I was given only ?40 in notes of ?10 of which one was folded in half (to my utter surprised).

Has anyone had a similar experience with this post office?

I will see what the manager has to say tomorrow, but I feel rather disconcerted at this point - surely they count their money each day at the end of the day.

Should I report this incident to the local police?

Generally the service provided comes down to who is behind the counter on the day, the younger gentleman is always very articulate and helpful, the more elderly gentleman who I have not seen for sometime, I find mumbles and so is harder to understand. Only had one instance with the woman and from memory she asks questions that with a little thought would not need to be asked.

I always much much preferred the Post office in Woodvale, but once the Post Office ceased there was left with the FHR PO being the most local one.

Funding crisis is getting worse and the VAT on Education pushed children out of independent schools, now their SEND needs are to be met by the state.
    • I completely agree with you - and last night was really terrible where I am. Between midnight and 1am was the worst, where it genuinely felt like a war zone. I had to run out of my house to try and stop a grown man setting them off in open space right by our front doors. In response he went to throw a half lit one at me and then seemed to think better of it. I am so sad at how bad the situation has got here and how selfish people are. Fireworks are bad for the environment and for pets and wildlife, as well as just being unnecessary noise for people too. I have sent an email today to Helen Hayes, which I have done previously on this issue. Would advise anyone to write to your MP to do the same, and to ask them to engage with the debates scheduled for 19 Jan.
