Dulwich & District U3A Monthly Open Meeting Wed 11th Nov

Herne Hill Baptist Church, Half Moon Lane SE24 9HU

An Illustrated talk by Benny Dembitzer

'In the Eye of the Hurricane'

Is the large scale increase in refugees reaching Europe a one-off phenomenon or the gradual unfolding of wider and uncontrollable forces involving over-population, climate change, urbanisation, civil wars and global migration?

Benny, who lives locally, is an economist who has specialised in developing countries, particularly in Africa. He is a member of the team that won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985 and has published books entitled ?The Attack on World Poverty? and ?Sleepwalking into Global Famine?. He lectures frequently at London Universities and to voluntary aid organisations, and has recently returned from a lecture tour of Brazil.

The talk will be followed with Q&A and refreshments.

    • The current crimes from what I hear are phone theft from the person, car theft and tradesman vehicle/tools theft. Plus of course the overall increase in stabbings and shootings across London which are becoming normalised.
    • Whilst clearly 'a crime', I don't think this necessarily sits with the other things you have described. A tragic and awful incident certainly, and dreadfully traumatic to the victim, but not part of any 'crime wave' as such, I suspect. It's the sort of thing which, sadly, can happen anywhere (I, again, suspect).
    • Does anybody have a folding pasting table they no longer need? All the ones I've found online seem to have terrible reviews, mainly due to being unstable,  or else coming apart! I don't mind if it's grubby, I just want it to gesso wallpaper lining paper, for art not walls!
    • Massive thank you to Stephen. Painted our whole house - and got lots of other bits sorted, too. Nothing was too much trouble, everything looks great and all came in on quote. Fantastic. Liverpool fan, but don’t hold that against him. Will 100% use again.
