I want to take my Dad away for his 70th birthday in January and he fancies Dorset, an area I don't know at all - so, any suggestions on parts of Dorset and also if you have stayed anywhere lovely (self catering cottages I mean, not hotels? There will be four adults, two toddlers and one newborn baby. Any info greatly appreciated.

I've stayed http://www.folkemanorholidays.co.uk/accommodation-cottage.html here a couple of times. It's a bit off the beaten track but handy for when I want to visit my Mum who lives in a nearby village and can't put us up. The accomodation was comfortable and well equipped. It's also fairly new - I think the owners built the accomodation in the last 4 years or so. The owners are very friendly and helpful, they do B&B as well. Sherborne is close by which has its historic castle and abbey and is home to quite a well-to-do population. Plenty of pubs in the environs my recommendations would be the Fox at Evershot and the Helyar Arms in East Coker.

Thirty minutes or so to the nearest coast.

    • Please don't encourage people who want the trees removed! I love seeing all the trees round here! My war is against Photinias. I bloody hate them. They are everywhere. And they are just getting their horrible red leaves at the top. My partner points them out to me from the tops of buses. My  daughter sends me videos of them to taunt me 🤣
    • agree with Sue and Sue given that trees can be relied upon to lose their leaves once a year at the same time, the council is going to have its work cut out cleaning everyone's streets simultaneously - in addition to all the stuff that needs doing in later autumn.  The leaves form an excellent garden mulch and a bit of citizen action to complement the council is probably all that's needed. Or maybe the council could just get rid of the trees?  then we'll free up so much time to go to war on the dogs instead!
    • Hello, My 10 year old sporty boy is regularly getting up very early. Are there any sports club in or near ED before school that you'd recommend? Thanks, Sue
