Two cars crashed and are badly damaged. No personal injuries thank goodness. Apparently with the sun so bright and low hard for cars to judge when to pull out and car on Barry Road might have been going too fast.

Suggested speed humps might help BUT as a bus route full humps would be a problem.

Will ask officers for a site visit as this junction going to cause a death eventually.

Although, I was just commenting to my fiancee yesterday that is has been a while since there has been a crash at that junction. We live right on the junction so hear the crashes and near misses all the time.

A couple of months ago this junction was averaging one crash a week - so yeah, something probably needs to be done.

Use this junction all the time and I believe the cars/vans are parked too close to the junction so you cannot see up Barry road . I never have a problem looking down towards the clockhouse not great for people that live on Barry but better than having a car in front garden.
I loathe this junction too and if there is anything the council can do to make it safer I'm happy to add my voice to the campaign! The combination of low sunlight blinding you if you're going up Underhill and extremely poor sightlines on Barry Road due to parked cars (agree with Rhinestone Cowboy's post that they are too close to the junction) means that I frequently have to take a deep breath and lurch across just hoping for the best. Not a great way to make a driving decision. I know traffic lights aren't always popular in residential areas but I'd have thought there'd be a case for them here?
Mr Barber. I've written on this forum about this before, and written to the council too. Barry Road has been a nightmare for many a year. I remember being woken up early one morning when a car bombing it down Barry hit a car trying to come out of Upland. One of the cars ended by the entrance to Barry's Off License. If it had been any other time of day, there would have been many casualties, that's for sure. Barry Road needs to be fixed and fast. And while we're on it, its nearly impossible to get out onto Lordship Lane from many sidestreets such as Goodrich. Blind spots are huge, what with all the vehicles, many of which are big white vans, parked write up to the corner and most drivers around treating both Lordship and Barry as Silverstone. Tony

Speed humps on Barry Road have been used in the past at this junction. They did not result in any reductions in accidents. The humps were removed after it was found that increased viabrations from heavy traffic were causing structural damage to buildings on Barry Road.

I strongly suggest traffic lights.

  • 1 month later...

Shortly after this collision I met council officers. We examined all five collisions at this junction for the last three years.

On Wednesday officers presented recommendations of changing current single yellow lines to double yellow lines. It is hoped that with the existing kerb buildouts sight lines will be improved and collisions reduced.

Adding some yellow lines shouldn't take many weeks to employ contractor, etc.

Additionally, some consideration to 20mph speed limits is being made. Nothnig decided on this but being looked at.

Make Underhill rd a one way street from Barry rd might just be the answer.

1. Not if you live in Underhill Road it isn't

2. Where are you proposing re-routing the bus? And just how inconnvenient for everyone is that likely to be? It just moves the traffic problem to another junction with Barry - which doesn't achieve anything at all.

Advertising and sealing the traffic orders could take up to 6 to 9 weeks. Longer if there are objections

    • We live a little further down, on Pymers Mead. Traffic is terrible (always has been, but worse since the introduction of the Southwark LTNs). It's mainly the school drop -- traffic is noticeably lighter once the private schools break up  Have a few friends who live on that side of CR backing on to the train line. None has had any major complaints and the gardens on that stretch are fairly long, so you're not right on the line. Some have kids who go to Charter North -- its catchment defintely extends to Croxted Road. Other state secondaries nearby are Elmgreen and, of course, Kingsdale, although that doesn't have a catchment -- pure lottery
    • Hi. Does anyone know of a silver making jewellery workshop. I am trying to find something nice for my daughter’s 18th birthday.l for her and some friends but everything I find online is too pricey or can’t accommodate 10 girls. Thanks
    • Without doubt a busy road with constant traffic - but can always put in double glazing. If you have a car, don’t expect to park right outside - prob further away but with walking distance. Agree with PeckhamNicola re train times and freight but at least not wizzing by every few minutes! Sorry but little experience in state schools - obviously you have plenty of private - Jags Dulwich College, Alleyns. Judith Kerr on Half Moon Lane - good rep - no idea whether secondary or primary  - think primary. Also Charter School North - good reputation and Ark Evelyn - no idea! You might also look at West Dulwichand Crystal Palace Schools. Try Harris Academy as well. All the best.
    • It shouldn't be a difficult DIY job.
