Child psychotherapist in training - looking for a mother and baby to observe

Recommended Posts

Hello,

As part of my MA in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy, I need to observe a mother and baby starting from two weeks after birth to 18 months old. Whilst this might initially seem strange, it is said that the Infant Observation experience and routine of an observer?s calm, weekly visits can have a positive effect on the parent/s, enabling them to reflect about their interaction with their babies.

As an observer, I would have a background stance of friendly attentiveness, taking in whatever is happening in the ordinary life of the baby for one hour each week without taking notes. My aim is to be a neutral observer, as non-intrusive as possible, observing the parent-baby doing whatever they may be doing in their natural environment; I will not be doing assessments, offering assistance, making 'expert' judgements or recommendations. It is my aim to fit in around the needs of the mother and baby.

I am looking for an ?ordinary' family and developing child (e.g. not one likely to be receiving special attention/support from social services). Ideally, it would be a stable, fixed family living in South East London. Initially, I would arrange an introductory meeting in the home beforehand with both parents prior to the birth before they decide to volunteer. If this is successful, I would visit once a week for an hour, from the first 2 weeks of life onwards for 18 months.

Full confidentiality for the family is assured. I can provide a letter from my college, as well as a new, enhanced-DBS clearance. If you are interested, please get in touch.

Thank you,

Susanna Ford
