Dunkirk, France

Applicants are required to hold the relevant Visas/Work Permits

Background

A visionary British Headmaster, Dr Rory Fox, has set-up an emergency school in the Grande-Synthe refugee camp in Dunkirk - in order to keep its 300 children educated. He is urgently seeking volunteer tutors to teach motivated children in the camp under his management. Dr Fox?s camp was recently profiled in the guardian here.

Tutor Brief

Dr Fox is looking for 20 volunteers to teach English, Maths, Science and French on a part-time basis. This would entail teaching for 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon.

Teaching would mainly be on a one-to-one basis as all the children have different needs.

Volunteers must be 18+ but don?t need any teaching experience.

Logistical and Contractual Details

Start date: ASAP

Placement length: unspecified as the refuges come and go. Even a week of volunteering could make a real difference, but priority will be given to those who can commit for longer.

Accommodation and travel expenses must be covered by the volunteer. The camp is easily accessible from the centre of Dunkirk where relatively cheap accommodation can be found.

    • thanks Jenijenjen and all - yes, i remember walking or taking the bus from the elephant (where i was working) to Camberwell to get there.  I think Tim - who's still at Franklin's -  was there in those days, and the woman who ran the cafe!  Other food places that i remember fondly are the ones in Neal's Yard (with the Hunkin sculpture that you could put a coin in ) and the basement lunch place at the Tottenham Court Road junction with Hanway Street...
    • Did you try the emergency number posted above? It mentions lift breakdowns over the festive period outside the advertised  times. Hope you got it sorted x
    • People working in shops should not be "attempting to do the bill in their head." Nor if questioned should they be  trying to "get to an agreeable number." They should be actually (not trying to) getting to the correct number. I'm afraid in many cases it is clearly more than incorrect arithmetic. One New Year's Eve in a restaurant (not in East Dulwich but quite near it) two of us were charged for thirty poppadoms. We were quite merry when the bill came, but not so merry as to not notice something amiss. Unfortunately we have had similar things happen in a well established East Dulwich restaurant we no longer use. There is also a shop in East Dulwich which is open late at night. It used not to display prices on its goods (that may have changed). On querying the bill, we several times found a mistake had been made. Once we were charged twice for the same goods. There is a limit to how many times you can accept a "mistake".  There is also a limit to how many times you can accept the "friendly" sweet talking after it.
    • Adapted not forced.  As have numerous species around the world.  Sort of thing that Attenborough features.  Domestic dogs another good example - hung around communities for food and then we become the leader of the pack.  Not sure how long it will take foxes to domesticate, but some will be well on their way.    Raccoons also on the way https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1j8j48e5z2o
