No, it's just fortuitous.

But.

If you had been asked by god to design hell, with a special section that was particularly tortuous and awful to be reserved for producers of terrible music, and then by way of celebration at finishing hell by god's required deadline he/she threw you a party, and if at that party you put on the first record to kick off the dancing, and it was so awful god sent you straight to hell, well, that would be ironic.

Waitrose, like Fairtrade are the masters of doing just enough to corner the "I do really care, but not enough to use independent purveyors" Why Waitrose shoppers feel the need to blab on all holier than thou about their commitment to provenance and ethical production is beyond me. That extra 50p pays for marketing while flicking a few pennies at the hedgerows.

Coffee bean costs are frankly irrelevant, milk less so, but it's staff wages and rent etc that really dictate prices.

Why cafes should buy the best coffee available and advertise the fact

Cost of s*** beans ?8 per 1kg

Cost of awesome beans ?19 per kg

Working on 7gram per shot you get 142 shots per kilo

Cost of s*** beans in cup = 6p

Cost of awesome bean =13p

Relate these costs to gross profit and you may wonder why any independent cafe cheaps out on the burnt beans.

To the OP- You think BM is expensive? Surely only relating to your organic, fairtrade made at home garbage from Waitrose, rather than coffee street prices?

thanks RosieH for that info - good to know, I hope you are right about the animals having more space under the UK accreditation! applespider, I totally agree with you, have no qualms about paying more if its going to the right place, thank you for the info.

I love Blue Mountain, so individual and refreshing. Where I used to live it was sad to see the local, independent cafes lose business to the (no less than 3) big coffee chains who moved in and took over the high street. I think ED is great for coffee! xx

    • I completely agree with you - and last night was really terrible where I am. Between midnight and 1am was the worst, where it genuinely felt like a war zone. I had to run out of my house to try and stop a grown man setting them off in open space right by our front doors. In response he went to throw a half lit one at me and then seemed to think better of it. I am so sad at how bad the situation has got here and how selfish people are. Fireworks are bad for the environment and for pets and wildlife, as well as just being unnecessary noise for people too. I have sent an email today to Helen Hayes, which I have done previously on this issue. Would advise anyone to write to your MP to do the same, and to ask them to engage with the debates scheduled for 19 Jan.
    • And they started long before midnight!
    • First mate - I wondered if I was imagining things at 4.45 this morning . Apparently not .
    • The Dutch are addicted to New Year fireworks and spent €130million this year on them. However,  sales to individuals will be banned as from this year and celebrations will be organised by local and city councils. I have Dutch friends and for them, this can’t come soon enough. However, at least there it’s concentrated  on one night. Here, it’s never ending, any excuse to make a noise is seized upon with gusto. In addition to the annual celebrations, add birthdays, weddings, engagements, divorces, christenings, BBQs, etc etc. I dare say you can funerals to that list as well. Yesterday it started mid-afternoon and just carried on until the early hours. In the past, I’ve been woken up at 4am. Anyyone who doesn’t like it can go hang and you can ignore completely the  effects on people’s animals and wildlife. Don’t hold your breath about anything being done here, however.
