OK, friends and I are planning to live with nature next weekend and we were so organised that we booked the date with each other a while back. But camping is so cool nowadays we are fast realsing that many good places (especially ones that allow campfires) are booked up well in advance. So, does anyone have any recomendations, especially ones of the beaten track???

Hmmm sounds lovely, but a bit far to travel methinks with a couple of cars full of toddlers. Seriously, all areas 3/4 hours or less out of London would be great. Used to go to one in Kent which was just a field where they let you have bonfires but they have stopped doing it now :( The infamous Blackberry wood is booked until October (!) and The orchards in Suffolk is again booked up till August. Though I have to say there may be a few cancellations this weekend with the flood warning..... But we are going next weekend when the sun will return I am sure!

My friends always seemed to be camping in the new forest.

Couldn't help with actual sites.

I've camped a couple of times in the woods of the chilterns near Barton-le-Clay. Not sure it was strictly speaking legal, but noone ever complained. Beautiful part of the world.

Mumra, I have sent my suggestions for our sojourn to the mother of the Weasley's as I will not be in attendance this weekend. I feel I need to make some contribution, if only to stop the boys taking us to the woods so they can pretend they are Ray Mears and then realise it's at the bottom of a hill by a reservoir on the turn...

Have included quite a few that allow fires so fingers crossed.

Try this site. I used them a couple of years ago to find a site in Whitstable, but you can search all over the UK and in France too. You can also do an advanced search to get places with a pool, or adult only etc.

They do members site reviews too which is very helpful.

    • Staff have changed and owner now taking a more active role….she is such a nice+lady so I encourage you to try again . I am all for supporting local business and personally very glad after appalling service earlier this year Gail’s has closed.. Change of staff and chefs were unreal.. In one month alone must have had at least 4 new chefs plus god knows how many waiters/ waitresses.. when Ai saw that happening, new it was gonna be down hill all the way.

    • To be fair, a pot of tea for one in a department store is a small pot, and you only get one cup or mug!
    • I know - we have been here lots of times since it first opened,  which is why we were disappointed that it was closed at a time it was supposed to be open, but with no notice to say why! I guess we will just  have to ask the reason at our next visit, but I'm not sure we will risk Saturday lunchtime again unless we find the closure  was an unavoidable one off ....
