Well if you weren't galavanting with the almighty and spent a bit more time at home then it might be a different story. What's for tea?

  2. Cruel to be kind and all that but maybe keep the cat indoors until weight re-enters the healthy range? A cat that big won't be running around much so it's not like the exercise is vital to the weight loss programme, at least not as vital as nothing other than a measured bowl of IAMSlite to eat.
  3. I did my usual piss-poor job of circulating, only managing to say hello to about half the crowd despite being amongst the first there...

Thought the pub was solidly traditional, although the chaps with the neck tatoos flicking through our unattended stuff did put me a tad on edge towards the end. None of that overshadowed another cracking night - guest singer belting out "living on a prayer" inbetween heavy pulls on an inhaler was a particular highlight!

Uruk Hai (sauruman's army) are Orcs crossed with Goblin men...

Haven't seen the poster in question, but the bits of the Canaries that are nice white sand are beaches built using sand from the Sahara - the canaries are naturally black volcanic sand. So showing the "real" canaries, by the sounds of it, even if not the prettiest

  5. Feels a bit like when the Berlin Wall came down - only different, obviously - or peace in Northern Ireland.

not quite in the same ball-park just yet, but let's wait and see if he follows thru.

Because, as Mrs number5 has just said to me, what it feels a bit like is May 97 when Blair got number 10 - and we all know how that initial bit of hope panned out... Good luck Obama! ;-)

  6. Just finished watching it, sean - thanks for the loan!

I was absolutely in love with Jodhi May when I saw this

likewise. A moment aided by one of the greatest scores ever produced. Similar to the opera scene in shawshank - a lot of the more serious/arty additions to this thread are accompanied by quality soundtracks.

    on a less serious note...

  7. Bit slow on the uptake, as always, and have only just seen this thread - find myself hoping that the original poster was taking the piss right from the word go: the alternative, that from the outside we actually look like one giant postcode-wide baby-group, is just too depressing - the "all you see on lordship lane are women with buggaboos" brigade would do well to consider that, shift workers aside, everyone else is at work all day because YES, careers aplenty.
  8. For pure mouth open staring in disbelief: look here... admittedly makes bugger all sense if you haven't seen the rest of the film.

For everything else, i've just spent ages flicking thru clips from my favourite film of all time and i can't decide on a best clip. too many.

This? So if anyone hasn't seen Shawshank, do so. save me agonising!
  9. Will be wearing my poppy with pride and shunning any crap about making an alternative political statement on a day and around an act that is, and always will be, about the incredible sacrifices made in the past. I understand the point that the white poppy brigade are trying to make, but make it on another day.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.

Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.

They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,

They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,

    We will remember them.

I'm getting too easily baited in my old age. I'm assuming that is what's happening here: you're either deliberately misunderstanding me, or we're just not going to resolve this. Either way, in the words of those nice rich people on dragons den, I'm out.

  11. Sean thanks for the comment but really "....fertility does not exclusively correlate with maternal age at the exclusion of all other factors." well it does a bit doesn't it or else why isn't Granny HBF popping them out with Gramps. The young conceive easier than the old

Since that was me, not sean (chalking one point up for your observation skills), i guess i should riposte, not him.

If you check my wording nice and closely, you'll see that i threw in the word "exclusively" - haphazard typing? not so. Granny and gramps may not be popping them out, but there are couples in their 20's with the same problem. Conversely, Jah Lush has cited an example of natural fertility into what you seem to class as the "must've been IVF" age bracket. No one is denying that there comes a point where age affects fertility, but it is not the only factor, the aetiology is not exclusive.

I'm a current boy of East Dulwich, where as when I move away I will become an Ol' East-Dulwicharian.

H-B-F, not sure that we still live in a world where any sensible gel has herself a husband and 2.4 by her mid-twenties, or else she can't have moved out of her fathers home and must be anxious about being left behind. University demographics are heavily skewed to the female student, and it's not a clever cover for a finishing school, it's about lifestyle choices. Because, d'ya know, fertility does not exclusively correlate with maternal age at the exclusion of all other factors. Happy to draw some pictures and get out the lego if this explanation seems too complex.

Back on topic, you know you're an EDite when:

you've heard someone announcing some social slander or other, and find yourself looking for a link from guardian.co.uk to show the scallywag what-for ;-)

  13. Gotta say I love Mr.Luis - consistent standard (not claiming to be chinese gormet, chinese staple and I think it's great) for use as a takeaway, and went in for the first time in ages the other week and thought it was lovely service, tho a bit over-stretched. But then that was because it was packed, which is another good sign, as is the fact that it's been there for ages.
  14. Honestly , smokie, "madras madness" sounds like it would totally bugger up everything that I liked about your place. Simple, understated and classy without being pretentious was how I would describe the evening that I spent in your establishment, you seemed to have hit the middle ground of proper ol' pub and gastropub absolutely spot on under the old management. I get that you need to fill the coffers and that it is, after all, a business, but it's a shame that you don't sound keen to preserve any of that.

As has already been noted above, lordship lane has 4 thousand curry houses and more than 1 bar doing happy-hour cocktails. Should I fancy curry and a cocktail, then I will go to said places. I was planning on the duke as my sunday lunch spot. I've got to say that I'm far from enthusiastic about these ideas.

I guess that means that i'm just not your target customer, but I was this time last month.

  15. Only just spotted this thread - when we were there for forum drinks last week i thought it was great, and was very impressed by the taster plates of the food that they did for us (particularly the fish pie... VERY good).

Agree on the pub-burger front in general so just don't order them in pubs anymore.

Above posts that criticise the "standard gastro-pub" menu seem to have missed the fairly obvious point that it is, in fact, a pub...

    Next stop: sunday roast.

And tommy, the scotch eggs are DEFINITELY worth ?4 a pop!
