  1. No benmorg, she wasn't blaming the victim in this case, she was just saying that people tend to assume it's careless drivers who cause this type of accident, whereas if fact some pedestrians are pretty careless, too. She wasn't blaming anyone, and she was speaking generally, not suggesting anything about this particular case. To me she sounds like a very careful and responsible driver who goes in fear of having such an accident despite her best efforts to be aware of everything happening on the road in front of her.
  2. I don't think sweetgirl's post was tactless or inappropriate. As a driver she spends more time than most on the roads, and she is simply highlighting the fact that busy city roads are very dangerous, pedestrians aren't always aware of what it's like for drivers of vehicles as road users, and as a parent I couldn't agree more that we have to train our children from a very young age to be traffic-aware and be safe as pedestrians.
  3. I would have done the same as you. Unfortunately they were horrible kids. On the whole, I find the older children are very careful of the little ones. You had an unlucky experience. Edited to say: This wasn't this morning, was it? If so, those kids should have been in school. There must be a truant officer somewhere at the Council! You could have reported them!
  4. Thanks, will try them in the morning if still no water...
  5. ... anyone else have the same? It went off about an hour ago. We live right at the top of Lordship Lane, so I'm hoping it has been turned off because of overnight roadworks between the Horniman and Sainsburys on London Road. Hope it's back in the morning...
  6. Over a hundred views in under two hours suggests that a lot of people would like to know the answer! ;-)
  7. That Guardian article.... I don't think Nina Power had quite finished it..... she didn't make a point at all.
  8. Maybe they meant eclectic? Anything to get away from that over-used word, "diverse"!
  9. My green wheelie bin has disappeared from in front of my house. Only a few people in our street have painted their mumber on their bin, and my bin looks the same as all the other un-numbered ones, so I can't say for sure that it has just ended up next door... anyway, will Southwark Council charge me for a new one? Thanks.
  10. I got some rather nice coloured paper bags from Farmers (on Lordship Lane, opposite Soup Dragon - it's that shop that sells everything useful!) a couple of years ago for my son's 3rd birthday party. I also got some craft bits (some leaves and letters I think) amd decorated the bags, and inside the bags I had some bits from Farmers and some bits from Soup Dragon. But if you are having lots of children you might not have time to decorate bags yourself (when my son was three we just had a small party, but when they start school they have lots more friends to invite!). I find that Farmers is good for all sorts of useful things. Otherwise Just Williams at Goose Green Roundabout has a good selection of party stuff. Also Sainsbury's on Dog Kennel Hill has a whole kiddies' parties bit. I haven't seen the boxes anywhere, though. Good luck! Enjoy!
  11. Apparently there was a shooting in Camberwell yesterday evening, maybe it's related. My husband was driving to London Bridge to meet me off a train, he got to Camberwell around 8.30pm and the road was closed (past King's, the main road where Butterfly Walk is was cordoned off). He was told there had been a shooting.
  12. I gave Poppet a fiver! I meant to give him ?2, but I put the tooth in a kinder egg container so it wouldn't get lost under the pillow, and then found the ?2 coin wouldn't fit.
  13. I went past on the bus (towards ED, my bus stop is Wood Vale) at about 08.50. All I saw was two stationary cars, an ambulance and the police talking to quite a few witnesses (about 8 or 10, people who were at the bus stop I guess). The ambulance didn't seem to be "busy" ie attending to anyone, so I was hoping this meant no one was hurt. Traffic going towards ED was not slowed at all. As I said, my bus stop is Wood Vale so I live very close to this junction and it is a very dangerous junction - over the five years I have lived here I have seen and heard of numerous accidents and I really don't understand why there can't be a proper pedestrian crossing (with green man and red man lights) at the top of Dulwich Common, from the where the War Memorial is to the Harvester corner. I was thinking that because it is such a busy road, the people who decide these things think it would slow down vehicle traffic too much? I know thread is about an accident that was on the other side of the road, so I hope I haven't hijacked the thread, but accidents happen in the area around that junction, maybe as drivers approach they have too many things to look out for? Not good for drivers either?
  14. @ Vik - lol! they were keeping me up too but they seem to have gone away now...
  15. The postcode for Mercia Court is SE22 8NN, and it's not particularly close to The Gardens but in Highwood Close. At least you tried!!
  16. I know a Mercia Court. Is the post code on the envelope?
  17. "Sweden or other Arctic Circle countries"? I think you'll find that very few people live within the Arctic Circle...
  18. Sorry Sue, no she didn't, it was you but you had quoted her post so I got my wires crossed. Also about the flight paths, I wasn't talking about the ones directly over East Dulwich, but in the sky over London generally - I was talking about my journey this eveing from WC1 back to SE22, between 5.15 and 8.00 this evening when I finally got home, and it just struck me as odd not to have seen or heard anything overhead. It really was a strange journey, with massive delays and of course no information about anything, and everyone wondering what was going on. Very unsettling!
  19. Yes Saila, I remember the IRA bombings, and I was here too at the time. And Sue, I had no idea big aeroplanes just drifted along on the breeze...
  20. Yes Sue - you're right - and don't you think that's a bit suspicious? And why are there no busses tonight? I live on Lordship Lane and it's never this quiet this early.
  21. I was thinking the same, Saila, except I was afraid it might be the real thing. Nothing in the skies makes it especially spooky. We always have air traffic in London. Except for Icelandic vocanoes and terrorists.
  22. Apparently two accidents, but still.... http://www.bbc.co.uk/travelnews/local/london.shtml
