  1. Especially if both England and France manage to stick a few points on Scotland and Italy However, I'm not even going to predict that England beat the Scots, let alone a scoreline
  2. The police also store every complaint they receive and collate intelligence on prolific offenders, which informs stop and search decisions, for example. The more info they get, the more likely there will eventually be an arrest and prosecution.
  3. Even Mirch Masala seems to have gone downhill since they expanded and made it look a bit nicer The curry houses on LL serve their purpose - if you are out and decide you want a curry, there you go. If you are deciding to go out for a curry (and you don't mind driving 15-20 minutes), there are many better choices. Especially if you actually want to eat Pakistani or Gujarati or Sri Lankan food, rather than UK curry classics cooked by Bangladeshis.
  4. Paid 1.1% last spring, but times are harder now Think second-hand car buying - "I really want to give you the business but I can't pay that....."
  5. Marriage lesson - does that involve a rolling pin?
  6. I had a look here It looks about as useful as patches to make you thin
  7. Not sure about a can of worms I think some people are disappointed to see a plug for such a dubious product here. You can see my opinion above.
  8. "The Jen Fe patch is an extraordinary, simple, self-adhesive information program for better looks and a beautiful figure. At the same time, the uptake of the ingredients contained in the patch is insignificant. The Je Fe patch contains well-known substances from nutritional supplementation that can guide the healthy upkeep of the human body during scientifically recognized administration of the substance so that it is easier to maintain a beautiful figure. The uptake of the substance from the patch, however, is so minute that the benefits for the beautification and maintenance of the body can not be explained according to conventional ways of thinking." I thought it was clinically proven, nuala? Interestingly, on the website there is precious little hard info about the product, and loads about how being a distributor is a great business opportunity. Scam!
  9. Buth the official view is.....scam!
  10. Spam or scam....or both?
  11. The Tourists cover of "I only want to be with you" Marc Almond's cover of "What" The Communards "Don't leave me this way" None of them necessarily better than the original, but different, in a good way
  12. "Are you sure this croissant is organic?!
  13. Going all the way back to Sean's first post Any museum of any stature in the US would not represent the Vietnam war in a "Green Berets" kind of way, because the causes and morality of that war have been debated more thoroughly and passionately in the US than anywhere else on earth. Citizens of the US are able to do this because theirs is a country where freedom of expression is not just theoretically guaranteed but is actively asserted and protected in the courts on a regular basis. So let's be charitable to the American victin of Sean's cyber-snooping - maybe he just expected a more critically rigorous approach to history
  14. I also went to Sicily for my honeymoon (had previously lived there), but more specifically to Lipari, the largest of the Aeolian Islands. We stayed in an apartment owned by the family who own a really good restaurant on the island, Filipino. I've looked at their website and they have obviously expanded since then, but I guess where we stayed was the residence mendolita. We had a fantastic time, and the owners were great - they booked stuff for us and got discounts, gave us free drinks when we had dinner in the restaurant etc. I would also recommend the Aeolian islands generally for a relaxing trip, but don't go in August
  15. "Whether you like it or not, racist or not, America's foreign policy has been responsible for upward of 5 million deaths in the post war period, and probably higher than that by a figure I wouldn't even be comfortable hazarding a guess at, but I'd be opening bids in the 20s, putting it on a par with Stalin's Soviet Union." Stalin directly caused the execution, starvation or death by other means traceable to government, i.e. his actions, of 20 million odd. You think you can do the same mathematical exercise for the US and come up with the same figure? We all know lots of Americans we like - liberal ones from the East or West coast, who vote democrat and aren't evangelical christians, in fact Americans who seem a lot like europeans. There are millions of others who aren't like that but who are entitled to tell us to f#ck off and leave them to run their country, a fully functioning democracy. The figures for the foreign born population of the US are far higher than any european country and rising all the time. The average American might be forgiven for thinking that people all round the world want to live like them when the evidence is in front of them. As to the vietnam issue, there was a genuine civil war with backing from superpowers on both sides trying to advance their global strategy. The majority of the population were born since the war, and in my experience there is less anti-american feeling there than here. Funny that.
  16. Everybody has a choice, and if everybody chooses to shop at the cheaper place, the more expensive one goes out of business. And if an even cheaper alternative is available.....etc. Ah, the wonders of market economics!
  17. http://www.pv-holidays.com/ This is a french company, lots of self-catering accomodation and v child friendly
  18. how many roads must a man walk down before you call him a cab
  19. Prohibition works to the extent that you cannot buy coke at the newsagents, but we have now reached the point where throughout the UK you can buy pretty much any controlled drug fairly cheaply and easily - subject to occasional fluctuations, drug prices across the board have never been lower. The issue with prohibition is whether the very limited success in making drugs marginally more difficult to obtain is worth the by products - a huge volume of acquisitive crime and a certain amount of very serious violent crime being two of them.
  20. I heard that a new cafe is opening which will be serving child-based snacks Grilled child, deep-fried children on toast, and toddler sashimi
  21. We moved to Barry Road in June this year, having previously been very close to ED station. There is traffic noise but we have double glazing and so it's not noticeable - traffic jams v. rare. Parking not perfect but definitely better than many of the streets off Lordship Lane. The buses running to Peckham Rye station are a v. useful addition to transport links. Subsidence is an issue throughout East Dulwich, but not to the extent that insuring is difficult (based on anecdotal evidence). The homebuyers report should say whether there is evidence of movement and if so whether historic, and if it didn't I would go back to them and ask. All in all, we really like it. Handy for everywhere we want to go, nice houses, and (as previously mentioned) v. attractive - long straight avenue with mature trees framing the church spire.
  22. What is the real substance of the Zenorians (I like that too) objection? The site is adjacent to LL so v. unlikely to increase foot traffic on the street, parking is already disastrous (as it is on every street off LL between Goose Green and the police station) so can't really get worse, would seem unlikely to be particularly noisy/smelly etc. How is this particular development likely to change the character of the street? It's also worth bearing in mind that even if the planning issue is resolved in favour of the warehouse that doesn't mean they are not liable to further control if, for example, it leads to particular problems with regard to litter or some other identifiable nuisance. Is it possible that it's a load of knee-jerk nimby b*ll*cks?
  23. Girls Aloud = Pretty, funny, humble, talented and just nice Are you sure? How about living proof that if you throw enough real(if dubiously employed) talent - songwriters, producers, musicians, choreographers, stylists, PR etc. - at a bunch of decent looking girls who are willing to pole dance with their clothes on, that's enough to bring success in the pop business?
  24. The judge was pretty scathing about corporate failures, for which Blair does have to carry the can. The atmosphere at the time was pretty hysterical, and it appears that the firearms officers had been briefed in a pretty incendiary way, making it inevitable that if they were called upon to 'stop' a suspect they were going to kill them - even more important therefore to make sure that surveillance, communications etc being done properly. It sounds a bit lame to say that the reason someone was killed was because of management/organisational failures, but it often is true, and seems to have been true in this case. The failure of the senior officers and the organisation to admit any fault, and the non-cooperation/attempted cover-up/smear tactics suggests lessons haven't been learned and a change is needed.
  25. "Here unborn babies have no rights in law and thus do not have the same legal protection." It is an offence to cause a child capable of being born alive to die before it has an existence independent of its mother or to procure a miscarriage other than as allowed by the Abortion Act (max penalty in either case - life imprisonment)
