  1. No problem. If you use firefox you can download the British English dictionary plugin to the spellchecker, putting an end to those awful squiggly intrusions everytime you deem an s to be preferable to a z ;) I still find it sad poor Cnut has been wiped from the language thanks to software designed to protect us. Either that or he has been given a VERY bad name!!
  2. ps I can't help but notice that when you quoted me: thus, you took it on yourself to correct my spelling (or should that be speling?) from marvellous to marvelous. For starters I'd have definitely used "(sic)" just to highlight the fact, but I can't help but feel a little chagrin that you took me to task from a perspective that felt the american usage somehow was more relevant to our lovely little parochial forum than the British English. I suppose though that I've basically decided to resign myself to this as I seem to live in a world where i receive advise, probably about a schedule (\ˈske-(ˌ)j?l) and almost certainly at nite time. But then I guess I'm some sort of luddite, standing Canute* like at the tide, if you don't mind my mixing my slightly irrelevant metaphors ;-) *And I also note that trying to use King Cnut's proper name results in, well, you can see for yourself!!
  3. Firebug is a firefox extension, rather than a browser or a website, I'm sorry if I gave the wrong impression. I should have said 'if you analyse the site using firebug...' It is a tool mainly used by web developers that allow you to see Ajax calls in the background (requests, parameters and responses). To see all the script files included such as css files, to home in on HTML elements using the GUI, navigate the DOM, dynamically change much of the above and even put breakpoints into client side scripting and do value debugging. Very very useful. This means that if you want you can change the 'new's to a puce colour, but only on your browser....and only until you reload the page. Google* firebug, there's plenty of info out there. *The verb 'to google', not 'google firebug'
  4. OK, new york times isn't exactly the blogosphere, but it is a rather beautiful and interesting way of representing total box office receipts, broken down by film and time, for the last 25 years http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2008/02/23/movies/20080223_REVENUE_GRAPHIC.html#
  5. Ladymuck, if you have a look at the site using the marvellous firebug, you can see that there are two relevant css classes PhorumNewFlag {color:#CC0000} applied to, funnily enough, all the 'new' flags. Then there is a:visited {color:#000099} a css pseudo class which uses the browser's knowledge of your browsing history to recolor (sic) any previously visited hyperlinks on that page in a certain colour. That is in the phorum css file edforumstyle.css, so Admin could turn it magenta or puce should (s)he so wish, but blue will suffice. But it's not trying to anything specifically clever. I do have a feeling however that if you've cleared down enough read messages on a thread such that the following new post is actually on page 11 when the last one you'd read (and hence where the new was previously pointing) was page 10, this is effectively an unvisited url so it'll show red again. If you clear your history in your browser options (or visit the forum in a different browser) they will all turn magically red again too Does that help?
  6. I love the incredible string band. Anyhoo, am trying* Field Music's eponymous album. Double album full of good guitar pop. Has a sort osmotic seventies feel without actually being retro at all, which is quite an achievement if you ask me. There are hints of later Beatles, Television, Supertramp, even early 70s Floyd without the influences dominating at all. It's also pretty good. *I'm not going to the pub much these days. CD buying is my one luxury, especially as you can listen to them with your hands full. Despite my optimism, xbox controllers are proving pretty tough to use with baby in arms :(
  7. The ever dependable daily mash http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2568&Itemid=81&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+thedailymash+(The+Daily+Mash.+It%27s+news+to+us.)&utm_content=Google+Reader "Doctor Foster Went to Gloucester In a shower of rain. He would have stepped in a puddle Right up to his middle But luckily he was a GP so was driving one of his Range Rovers to the golf course while his receptionist referred all his patients to the local chemist." "One, two buckle my shoe Three, four, knock at the door Five, seven is it? I'm sorry, I went to a state school that felt that arithmetic was not as important as teaching me about lesbians and socialism."
  8. Aah yes The National. Very excited. Talking of which, the guy that produced Boxer did my mate's album Pilotlight - 'The Post War Musical'* which is actually a pretty solid work and came out a couple of weeks ago, so I shall shamelessly plug them again. Again in other news, Fanfarlo - 'Reservoir' (clap your hands say yeah snog Beirut to a backdrop of Arcade Fire), The Low Anthem - 'Oh My God Charlie Darwin'(sound like, well, The Low Anthem, bluesy Americana with clever wordy stuff) and Passion Pit - 'Manners' (an amalgam of 80s pop with art rock sensibility and an eye and a half for a pop hook). *yes horrifically pretentious review, but it's a small band, they won't make it to the guardian or pitchfork.
  9. The key is to enter a zen like state and let instinct govern your actions. 'Think not, do'; or 'use the force' would both seem appropriate. Sleep deprivation probably helps in this respect. Plus, as I've mentioned to SMG, the secret is play when you're having a number two!!
  10. 109400 S-4, 8 in a row. Come on carnell, game is afoot.
  11. Rory and I ready there. His mum is trying to persuade him he's Irish or some craziness!!
  12. Bah humbug. It's always a pleasure to read someone as pedantic, nay as grouch-forward as me (or as I, if you're pedantry-forward, tbh me is fine).
  13. Quite cool. Sort of the Fun Lovin' Criminals partying with Buck 65 round chez Pink Floyd. If that's even possible. kpc, love the Watson Twins, have a coulpe of Kissaway Trail songs kicking about, I do like them but haven't got round to grabbing an album. Will give those Lakes a listen too. As for Ms Newsom, I still have plenty of absorbing to do, so early days yet. But so far it doesn't seem to have the charm of Milk-Eyed Mender, nor does it have the cogent feel that Ys managed. I know what you mean about it being somewhat bitty and you get the feeling somewhat self-indulgent. 3 albums of stuff could well have benefitted from the editor's pen. But it's a bold move; with clear critical and even commercial success for Ys she could have stuck with the forumla and the pressure may have been there to do so. As far as I know she produced Ys pretty much as a solo project, harp in hand (or knees) and then it got packed off to new yoik where the lush arrangements were layered on top. I thought it worked brilliantly but I suspect she wasn't satisfied with it. Nick Drake and Sandy Denny (drawing the obvious alt-folk comparisons) both felt the same way about their music but struggled to get artisitc control over their output and move toward the much more beautifully affecting pared down music of their later canon before both lives and careers were tragically cut short. It takes guts to do what she's done and be true to herself and what she feels is her integrity. So hats off to her for moving boldly in that direction, and certainly there is much to love in these albums. Even Pink Moon isn't flawless!! *edited to say it were That Handsome Devil to Sean*
  14. I have to admit i didn't know them by heart, had to look it up. Lyrics not my thing, I barely manage to remember "bubbles". Having seen Norwich a good dozen time's with my Naaaadge mate, I'd struggle to reproduce more than 'On the ball city....' frm memory. It would be quite something to behold though!!!
  15. Me llena de asombro Como gal?n de Magnet Como paquete de Woodbines Como tabaco en polvo Como feria en Sheffield Como bocadillo [de fritas] grasoso* Como Atl?tico Sheffield** Que me llene de nuevo Naaaaaa etc *drop the chips, it scans better **Poetic licence
  16. I've a feeling Rooney's fitness will pretty much govern our chances of doing well (again*). *again obviously refers to the fitness governing our chances, rather than to England doing well, which is now two decades hence.
  17. Some Temper Trap (feat. gold lam? rollerskater) ps didn't know the Edge was an Aussie!!
  18. Oh cool, where was that? Also quite enjoying Mumford & Sons. Good clean fun album. Thought the Pitchfork review very very harsh, but that's pitchfork for you. More interested in trying to be clever than be useful.
  19. whoops, I did check time and thought it was morning for some reason. I don't function well on interrupted sleep...
  20. Blimey Narnia, quiet a prediction. Did you take a punt on that?
  21. So, there was much excitement about the Joanna Newsom album, but as yet no feedback. Any thoughts people? So far I'm mainly admiring her legs on those CD sleeves! In other news have recently tried The Big Pink (modern shoegaze with a pop sensibility), The Temper Trap (first reference point was the Wild Beasts, then realised it's an electro power pop version of Coldplay Parachutes; still liking it though).
  22. Nice bit of rolling news p!sstake from the Onion News Channel
  23. "Don't suppose there's an iPhone app for EDF on it's way is there?" Bit of a limited sales potential though isn't there. 10,000ish have ever posted. I wouldn't expect more than about 1 in ten to have an iphone. 1000 potential sales meaning you'd have to charge about ?10 to make it vaguely worth your while writing the thing, and I can't see anyone paying more than 59p (being generous, ?1.19 at a pinch) for it. But i might give it a go just for the hell of it. I've been trying to think of something to do just for the exercise, and 'Fancy A Pint' haven't got back to me :(
  24. I'll see what I can do*. I'll have been a full time dad for five whole days at that point....yaaaaaaay. *re turning up fiiiinally. A crate full of coke goes without saying obviously. Talking of off strip venues, there's this lovely little 'spot' down greendale way....
