  1. Apologies for the repetitive misspelling of elitist. State school education :P
  2. Yes, the college is also elitest, but is cricket practice for your school?
  3. I have lived in East Dulwich since 1989 and Nunhead before that. A friend of mine was stabbed at the top of Rye Lane and a sister-in-law narrowly escaped being bundled into a car. They are just what comes to mind immediately without considering all of the incidents I've heard about in those thirty or so years. Admittedly both where a while ago, but I really would not want to risk walking with my wife along Rye Lane in the dark just as an experiment to prove that things may have improved. Where would you run to?
  4. There is a difference between elitest and self preservation
  5. I have been longing for a good cinema within safe walking distance in ED, and was delighted to hear that one was coming in the form of East Dulwich Picturehouse. However, I have not been able to go as I just can't justify the cost, approx ?25 for my wife and me! Even membership only saves a couple of pounds. Not to mention the cost of drinks etc. As with most new things in ED it is aimed at the 'new money' residents and does not take into account us lowly residents of twenty-five years plus, who have contributed to the area and community in that period. Wholly unfair and saddening that whole sections of our community are excluded.
  6. Dulwit is a jokey part of the East Dulwich anagram I use. I bit witty I thought.
  7. From what I understand Mark & Kitty sold the building, but the new landlord has kicked them out (I've heard stories of outrageous money grabbing rent increases from other landlords in the area recently). The online shop, big store concessions and homeware sides must be doing ok, so an expensive shop in East Dulwich is probably an overhead too far. Note the TV show did not refer to the 'Hope & Greenwood' brand, being BBC. Recently the TV show, previously book deals, so maybe the shops and their loyal clientele don't figure too much now.
  8. Wow. Sorry I missed that. I should have realised people would be in the know before the event. I expected the post to have begun more recently. Didn't think I'd have to search for it. Dulwit truly, but a bit rude to point that out.
  9. I can't believe nobody has commented on Hope & Greenwood closing down!
  10. It looks to me like the truck on its side may have been dropping off something heavy from its onboard crane without having let down the stabiliser legs under the truck first. I get the impression that the guy with the orange crane is using it to try and pull the truck upright, as it looks like a green webbing strap is running between the truck and crane grabber?
  11. I was kept awake by it too from about 4am, and it was still going off when I went to my car, very tired for work at 7:30. I was parked opposite the bus stop by Rye Court. I assumed it was coming from Turners MOT centre as my garden backs on to it, or from the church hall. However, it seems to have stopped now. It was more annoying than a constant alarm as you think it's finished then it starts again after a few minutes.
  12. Honor Oak Mansions has the envious facility of a large open-air swimming pool in the communal garden, hence the often heard sounds of frolicking as you go past.
  13. Sorry, not being a horticulturalist I did not realise it was aphids. That doesn't change the fact that I have an obligation to pedestrians and other road users to be able to see out of my car windows. I cannot clean them every single time I need to make a journey. In the height of the season it takes only minutes to get a fresh layer of the stuff all over the car. It is carried by the breeze, so there is no safe harbour if you live/park on Barry Rd.
  14. Lets hope we will have a season without all that nasty sap ruining my winsdcreen wipers, sticking my car doors shut and being walked in to my carpets. I love trees, but bad planning to put them in this environment where the roots are damaging the pavements and encroaching on the house foundations. I'm sure the houses were there before the trees. Understandable that the original planters maybe didnt consider the number of houses which would be converted to flats full of 2-car families.
