  1. Just to make our Goodrich Road neighbours aware - our car was broken into last night (Tues). Not sure how they did it as no windows were smashed so assuming they used some type of scanner gadget?? We are on the top bit of Goodrich near Donkey Alley. Luckily the car wasn't nicked and we didn't have anything valuable in it but they made a real mess and left the door open. Keep your eyes peeled folks.
  2. My partner does handyman work for forum users and is always grateful if someone takes the time to post a recommendation on here. I agree that you need to be extremely careful when employing someone but if they have done a good job for you then it's nice to say so and to let other forum users know. I don't understand your point Sue - that a tradesman recently asked you to post a recommendation and because of that you have been put off using them again? Seems a bit mean especially if they did some good work for you.
  3. Congreve's Way of the World had me running out of my 6th form college gates. Dreadful book (ok...dreadful play...do they count on this thread?). Anyway...full of boring, insufferable Dandys who argued constantly about who had the best wig. Learnt the meaning of the word cuckold though.
  4. just to throw my hat in the ring - so to speak re contempt issues.

once a person has been charged with an offence the case becomes sub judice. this means that any reporting of the details of the person charged ie name and details of the alleged offence in the same article may prejudice a jury. the charge details and details of the offence can be reported but not together.

    eg.

article 1. joe bloggs of such and such address was charged with theft at sainsburys. he was further charged with assault.

article 2. shoppers intervened in a violent struggle as a 38 year old man attacked a security guard at sainsbury's having been caught stealing.

with regard to an arrest - the press can and do speculate as to the identity of that person but will include words such as 'allegedly' or 'believed' with regard to the offence that they are suspected of having committed as a caveat.

arrest details given by the police are minimal. they may release the age. once info is heard in an open court it is in the public domain and can be reported - unless reporting restrictions apply.

now that someone has been charged - care should be taken to avoid contempt issues!

  5. mmm...finding Istanbul by Orhan Pamuk a tincy bit painful. It's a shame because I'm going there this Thursday for a few days and hoped this book would open my eyes to more than the tourist view of the city. Never mind, I shall persevere but am already looking forward to a new book. What are the latest recommendations people?
  6. Well, having read through this thread I feel sorry for BB. A newbie comes and posts what they feel is a reasonable comment/observation and effectively gets blackballed. No need for such agression EDFrs. This new forumite has now been put off completly and I think that's appalling.
