  1. Having watched the item on the news last night I think it's being hyped up unnecessarily. I think the Americans have jumped on it in typical American style, but my view is that kids have just as much risk of getting a fingertip chopped off in hundreds of every day situations, and to keep your child away from the buggy when folding it isn't such a hardship.
  2. Another vote for DMC and the Lanes - they were just setting up when I had my 2nd child 17 months ago and were excellent at supporting me through the last couple of months of pregnancy when I was unwell.
  3. Fantastic post Naughty Mummy! I wish you every success with what sounds like an interesting concept, I'm sure there will be a lot of ED Mums who take you up on the night out (admittedly not me this time, but I'll keep an eye out for future dates as think it may just be worth a try). I think you should get the drinks butler to stand on Lordship Lane handing out fliers ;-) Best of luck.
  4. I'd be fine to do the 12th. P x
  5. Unfortunately I won't be able to make the 5th (unless of course you all want to come and watch the debut performance of Harmony Sinfonia, the orchestra I'll be performing with that night?!). Maybe next time!

  7. I could also do other nights, anything other than Tues (Mr Pickle has hockey practice) or Wed (I have rehearsal).

  9. Yep, count me in, I'll drag myself away from my usual date with the X Factor!

  11. The breakthrough in my daughter's sleep came when she figured out how to roll (quite early in the scheme of things, about 3.5 months) and started sleeping on her tummy. From birth it was obvious she wasn't comfortable sleeping on her back, so I used to sort of wedge her onto her side which helped, but it was when she started sleeping on her front that her sleep became more reliable. It sounds like you're doing everything you can to make sure he's safe, and if it means he's sleeping and you're happier I think that can only be a good thing. P x

  13. I'd be up for a bottle (oops, glass, I mean glass :-$) of wine at some stage if anyone else fancies it. While the Naughty Mummy thing sounds interesting I'm not really up to paying for the priviledge and it sounds a bit scary for me. Mojo?! Honestly, the mojo I used to have is responsible for me now having 2 kids, precious little sleep and a wardrobe consisting mainly of Primark, so I'd rather it stays away ;-) P x

  15. The ferry is a great way to see some more amazing scenery while crossing between the islands, but be warned, it can get VERY rough out there. I've had a couple of absolutely foul experiences on the ferry, most recent involving them making all the passengers lie on the floor in the centre of the boat while we rocked and rolled all over the place. People all around being sick, possibly the longest boat trip of my life! But on a nice day it's lovely :)
  16. Feel free to come and use my machine Skip, happy to help out. My machine is very used to cloth nappies! I get mine dry fairly easily inside using an airer in our bathroom which is really warm, they dry within 24 hours. PM me if you want to take me up on the offer.
  17. Cello is probably one of the best options in terms of not annoying your neighbours, as even when played badly it sounds quite nice :) I live very close to a cello teacher and never notice any noise, despite a constant stream of pupils coming and going. It's great that you're thinking of your neighbours! I practise (flute) in our loft room, which only attaches to our neighbour's kids playroom, and I figure the noise coming from their house more than drowns out what I'm doing. I only ever get a chance to practise in the weekends, and generally late morning/early afternoon, so hopefully it wouldn't bother them anyway. Enjoy!
  18. I haven't spent a NYE in Dunedin since 2000, I'm jealous! Hope it lived up to it's reputation and put on a good show for you! Did you party in the Octagon? Many years ago I used to work at the Ra Bar which featured pretty highly in the New Year's celebrations, good fun. Central Otago is also well worth visiting for the vineyards, if you're a wine lover. Fantastic wineries round that area with award winning wines being consistently produced. Central Otago pinot is my absolute favourite wine. Just make sure you leave your rental car at home that day! Many of the vineyards have brilliant restaurants attached, my idea of heaven!
  19. Thanks Moos... although I've been away from NZ for 9 years now and my holidays back there to see family these days are restricted to spending time in Dunedin with my parents, so I'm not really an expert on the nice places to go!! Good suggestions from the others already. I would add that if you want to see Central Otago (the "adventure tourism" part of NZ) don't stay in Queenstown, which is far too touristy. Wanaka is nice (although also heading towards the too touristy side of things) as is Arrowtown - my favourite purely for it's quaintness. There are some lovely restaurants in Arrowtown. If you head to Dunedin (where I'm from) be sure to look up Classic Jaguar Limousines, for all your sightseeing needs - and ensure my inheritance stays intact ;-) I think the best way to see New Zealand is simply to hire a car, not set yourself unrealistic expectations about how far to drive in a day, and stop anytime you see a sign indicating a walk/waterfall etc. as there are some absolute gems tucked away for you to see. The West Coast of the South Island is particularly spectacular, and the glaciers (Fox and Frans Joseph) are well worth a visit - it tends to rain a lot and the sandflies (midgy type things) are annoying, but it's beautiful. Lots of good traditional kiwi pubs over that way too! Have a wonderful time.
  20. Thank you all for your suggestions and experiences. The last couple of nights he's only woken a couple of times to use the toilet, so not quite so bad - we're struggling with it a bit as right from when he was small he's been an excellent sleeper, so to suddenly be up in the night when he's nearly 3 is difficult. I think I will keep him in the cot for a bit longer, I've been reassurred by others who have done the same. We're planning an extended trip to see my parents in NZ early next year so maybe that could be used as the time to move him into a bed - that way I can leave the "back to bed" dramas to the doting grandparents ;-)
  21. I was hoping to get some advice from you lovely people (oh how I've missed the forum!). My little boy will be 3 in January and still sleeps in a cot. I've never really thought anything of it, but have now started to realised that of his little group of friends he's the only one not in a bed. So I'm wondering whether I should move him? To give a bit of history on him - he was a late walker, and his cot was still at the "newborn" level until he was 20 months as he couldn't even sit himself up (bless him!). Obviously now it's right down at the bottom setting, but he wouldn't stand a chance of climbing out even if he wanted to, and he's never even tried. It's a solid cot bed, so there's plenty of room in it. My reservations are - he has a tendency to "sleepwalk", which at the moment just involves him standing up in his cot while still asleep... I was a sleepwalker as a child and my Mum tells horror stories about finding me heading out the front door! - he still has a lunchtime nap, and I know many of my friends found moving into a bed signalled the end of nap time. Anyone have children who still sleep during the day in a bed? He's definitely not ready to drop it as will happily sleep for 3 hours if I let him! - we're currently having him wake a lot at night asking to use the toilet, so I'm not sure whether moving to a bed would make this worse (in that he'd be able to climb out, but wouldn't be able to take himself to the toilet as he's not able to pull his own pants down etc.) - he's always slept in grobags... have others found it easy to transition from this to a duvet (I'm assuming it's not really safe to keep them in a sleeping bag once in a bed in case they try to walk around?) Obviously it's not an issue for him, he's too young to realise the difference between a cot and a bed, but I'd be interested to hear views from you all. P x
  22. Thanks Molly. He's still in a cot, and isn't yet capable of taking himself to the toilet - he can't (won't) even pull his own pants down, so no joy there I'm afraid. Fingers crossed for a quiet night tonight!
  23. Believe me, by 4am I was ready to throttle him! Mr Pickle took over at that point to avoid me being arrested. Although I did then lie there wondering whether you get a full night's sleep in prison?! And food cooked for you? And washing done? ;-) Iaineasy, I think I need to get you back to do more work for us - you were the best entertainment for the kids ever! C spends most of the day pretending to paint things and saying "I'm Iain", you definitely made an impression!
  24. Oh my goodness, wasn't that a loooooooong 2 weeks?! I've had to speak to my husband in the evenings, as well as concentrate on TV programmes and not have to ask every 5 minutes what just happened ;-) All's sort of well here, although DD apparently has swine flu, however I don't really believe the diagnosis and think it's just a particularly miserable cold. Anyway, she's on the mend - but is also finally cutting some teeth (she's only got 5 and is 16.5 months old!) so that's adding to the misery. DS has been a bit of a devil child the last few days (my friend thinks it's got something to do with the full moon!), and spent most of last night awake telling us he needed the toilet. It's been happening for a while, but usually just once or twice a night - last night it was literally every half and hour from midnight till 6am :( Any suggestions? He doesn't always actually need, and his nappy is still very wet in the morning (he's dry during the day, has been since June). So if anyone saw me today and was blanked, I do apologise - when out in public I was doing my utmost to hold it together and not kill either of my children! Today really was one of those days when I would rather have been at work! And to add to it all... our BT landline hasn't worked for the last 3 weeks and BT claim to have fixed it, my oven has stopped working, the central heating only works when it feels like it, and the boiler is making some very dodgy noises. Deep breath, glass of wine about to be poured! P xx
  25. I'm just in from a rehearsal (the cheek of it, fancy having to rehearse on the forum's last night for 2 weeks, do they not realise what a big deal this is?!!?), but off to bed shortly. See you in 2 weeks all! And good luck with the sleep Snowboarder! P x
