Hi Abigail, I've sent you a PM - have only just seen this post, and was previously a tea host. Thanks, P

Is now a good time to rub in the fact that I'm going to New Zealand, for 6 whole weeks, where it will be SUNNY (hopefully)! Not till mid February, but knowing I'm going to be escaping the last 6 weeks of the horrible phase of winter is helping me cope B) My afternoon was filled in by going for a walk, with moaning grumpy kids in the buggy, and resorting to browing in Lloyds Pharmacy because I couldn't find anything better to do! Older boy refusing to walk because "it's dark outside, I want to go to bed", younger girl screaming "wanna wawk, wanna wawk" all the way from Lordship Lane to Friern Road, where I finally gave in and let her out. Nightmare, as once she's out she won't hold my hand, so I looked like a hugely irresponsible mother letting my toddler run riot in the dark near busy roads. Sigh. Ceebeebees is on a lot more in the house now, and worryingly my 17 month old can sing the theme tune to "Mr Maker". Beckenham Spa soft play is a lot nicer than Peckham, maybe we should all go on an adventure outside the SE22/SE15 boundaries??

Free Sure Start Little Kickers at the Albrighton.
Pickle replied to Vik's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My son goes to Little Kickers on Saturday mornings, it's absolutely brilliant, lots of fun - and there are quite a few girls in his class, so don't worry :) I recently had to take my 17 month old daughter along to his class when my husband was away and she loved it, so looks like we'll be signing her up when she's old enough too. Enjoy! -
Hi Linzkg, The 9+ month recommendation is based more on developmental issues than size and weight - a child younger than that doesn't have the strength in their neck to protect themselves in an accident, so if you put a young baby forward facing and have an accident you are risking very serious injury. Keep him rear facing as long as possible... I took all the padding out of my maxi cosi rear facing seat for my kids and kept them both rear facing until they were over a year old. There's been a few discussions about this issue, together with some good website links etc, might be worth looking them up. P x

What to do if suspect neighbour mistreating a child
Pickle replied to ymenik21's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Thanks Iain, I'm sure the older 2 are sensible and it is a personal thing you're right. The already strained relations are the reason why I've stayed out of it so far, as I don't want a neighbours from hell situation! -

Best Mattress for Cot?
Pickle replied to Dulwich Born And Bred's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We've got M&P cotbeds for our kids, so the matresses fit - but I always thought cots/cotbeds were standard sizes? Standard cot fitted sheets fit our matresses perfectly no matter where I buy them from. -
Lloyd is out of tune a lot of the time, he really struggles. But I agree with Keef, the demographic of people watching the show are more likely to vote for Lloyd than for Jamie (or be like me - I watch it, liked Jamie, but wouldn't waste money voting!). Mr Pickle and I were saying last night that Jamie's performances had gradually lost their spark - I think he succombed to the pressure of the "mentors" and lost the edge that he had in his initial audition. Shame. Although he'll go on to do well doing what he was doing before the show. Joe would be great in the West End, but I don't see him successfully releasing a mainstream album. I used to like Danyl but now I think he's a bit weird! Stacey has a great voice, but once again I don't see her doing well outside of the show - she's not as good as Leona/Alexandra. So sadly I think it's feasible for the twins to win, based on their entertainment value!

:)) Ha ha ha, made me laugh out loud.

I like I'm a Celeb... enjoy Ant & Dec's banter, the fact that they really do humiliate the "celebrities" and it's a bit more involved than other reality shows. However Katie Price going back into the jungle is a joke - she's absolutely shameless, and this comes across as really desperate on her part. The live spiders in the mouth task last night was HORRIBLE! Eeeeeeeeeeewwwwww. I'd happily jump out of a plane, eat a kangaroo's bollock, but no WAY would I have been able to do that!
-
Agree with everyone else... when I met the lovely Anna a couple of weeks ago she looked great, with a fairly normal looking bump. Only 7 weeks to go - that's exciting!
-
I would have liked Jamie to stay as really don't rate Lloyd as a singer - but I guess as a fresh faced boy he attracts the votes. He's an OK singer, but certainly not as strong as others. I'm actually starting to quite enjoy the twins, despite having hated them the first few weeks - I figure if the show's going to be a complete farce on the singing front there may as well be an act to laugh at!

Car journey survival tips needed!
Pickle replied to snowboarder's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Are there two of you in the car with the baby? If so, could you sit in the back with him? I wouldn't turn his seat round as it's really not safe for such a young baby - but maybe if one of you was in the back with a collection of toys/books/funny faces/singing/finger food snacks it might help him stay calm for longer? Our kids have a longish sleep around lunchtime so where possible we try and drive at that time to ensure we get at least an hour or so of peace. I sympathise with you, it's stressful enough driving without having a screaming baby to worry about too! -

Both of my kids sleep on matresses from Mamas and Papas - my son's in now nearly 3 years old and isn't showing any signs of wear at all, so we're really pleased with them. They're nice firm matresses and both kids seem really happy on them (my daughter is a tummy sleeper). -
What does the health visitor do post-birth?
Pickle replied to Ko's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I agree Snowboarder, that's exactly how we felt. We'd ticked the "not likely to be at risk" boxes in their eyes so were effectively put to one side. The thing that REALLY annoyed me in the early days was that in the first 6 weeks, when I was at my wits end trying to figure out what our breastfeeding problem was, I rang the HV many times, left many messages pleading for help and nobody rang me back. When I finally found the correct route to Kings and had his tongue tie fixed, I then got a rather irate call from a HV effectively telling me off - "you should have come to us and told us there was a problem, we don't like it when the first we hear of it is a letter from Kings saying your baby had surgery". Emotive subject for me too! While I appreciate there are people more "at risk" than me, it would be nice to feel that there was support there if I needed it, and I never felt that way with baby #1 (hence with baby #2 I've simply stayed away altogether). -
I went out (as in outside, not out in the evening Colleen style) very quickly after both births. We went for hot chocolate the day after I got home with baby #1 as having been stuck in hospital for 5 days being induced I was suffering a bit from cabin fever. As he was early we didn't even have our pram, so drove to Cafe Nero (was the middle of winter) and sat him in his carseat on a table while we sat there a bit shellshocked. With my 2nd baby I was out walking down Lordship Lane less than 24 hours after I had her. Combination of having a 17 month old who needed fresh air and my mother in law staying with us - if I hadn't got out of the house I would have killed someone ;-)

Interesting to read your post Snowboarder. My son's red book makes interesting reading - my son was tongue tied (although this wasn't picked up until he was a couple of months old), and when my HV arrived to see us I was in a lot of pain, with bleeding nipples and a son who had lost quite a lot of weight. In the red book she wrote "Mum and baby happy, breastfeeding going well and baby thriving". Ko - the DMC baby clinic is on Wednesdays at Townley Road, from about 12.30pm I think. With your first child I think it is important to go along every now and then, even if only to get the baby weighed - but just don't take too much to heart. By all means take what the HV's say on board as they should technically know what they're talking about, but always trust your instincts and have the confidence to question what you're told. P x -
What does the health visitor do post-birth?
Pickle replied to Ko's topic in The Family Room Discussion
With both children I've only ever had one visit at home from a Health Visitor. They filled in necessary pages in the "red book" which are then supposed to be sent off (but in both cases, weren't, were lost), give you a bit of general "Babies for dummies" advice etc. As for what do they do... in my experience they give rubbish advice, seem hell bent on making you doubt your maternal instincts, and are best avoided at all costs. But maybe that's just me*! * must step away from keyboard, HV's are my absolute bug bear. Amongst the words of wisdom I've had in the past 3 years are "you should try giving him high fat foods like chips" when being given weaning advice for my then 7 month old, and "can he talk?" when doing a 2 year old check with my 2 year old in front of her chatting away non stop. Absolute waste of space! Grrrrrrrrr. -
Advice wanted - Baby won't take bottles..
Pickle replied to amydown's topic in The Family Room Discussion
This is such a difficult thing, as all babies are different. My daughter was a bottle refuser, we finally had a breakthrough at 13 months (yes, THIRTEEN months) when suddenly she guzzled down a bottle of cow's milk as if she'd been doing it for months. Little sod. We tried lots of different bottle, teats, methods (me leaving the house, dream feeding, switching from breast to bottle mid feed etc.) and none of them worked for us. In the end I decided I was fighting her for nothing as I did like breastfeeding and wasn't in a hurry to wean her, but caught a vomitting bug and asked Mr Pickle to try a bottle when she was due a feed, and we've never looked back. Standard Avent bottle, teat that had been used for 2 years previously by her brother :-$ Stick with it, the longer you leave it the harder it is in many cases, but try not to get yourself too stressed about it. Good luck x -
We've got 2 Maxi Cosi Prior XP's in our car, they're excellent.
-
My son was about 3 months old before Mr Pickle and I tentatively ventured to Lordship Lane one evening for dinner - we were home within a couple of hours and I worried the whole time, even though knew he was sound asleep and being babysat by very good friends. Wild horses wouldn't have dragged me out of the house when he was only 9 days old, goodness only knows how she did it!

Bunk beds and toddlers - not necessarily a good idea
Pickle replied to ryedalema's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Your poor little girl, hope she's OK (I'm hoping she's old enough to think a cast is a novelty?), and hope you and hubby are OK after what must have been a horrible shock for you both! I've been to Kings A&E once when my daughter was tiny, and I agree they provide a fantastic service, we're lucky to have them so close by. Take care x -
I think as long as you've got the paperwork you're fine. We almost bought an underpinned house on Keston Rd a few years ago but the paperwork wasn't complete and it was a battle to get insurance - so in the end we walked away. But I think it was an exception, most are no problem.
-
If we're going with the 12th that's great, count me in. Any venue is fine with me, it will be a novelty to be somewhere other than my sofa watching TV on a Saturday night!!

Mmmmmm, I agree. In 9 years of living in London I'm yet to find fish and chips that taste as good as NZ. Always one of my first stops when I go back for a holiday (paua pattie, onion sausage and chips - delicious!!). And a Jimmy's pie, can't be beaten :)
