  1. Listening to Portillo on this week it sounded more like, "stop expecting the government/taxpayer to get you out of every hole you land in." Not sure how that sits with the name Big Society, though.
  2. Do you have to buy an Audi TT before or after you graduate?
  3. Have you got a thing for plumbers, Nette, or do you just need your pipes, erm... seen to?

  5. My house was built in 1997. Boring.
  6. Why do I suspect this thread is going to end with '... and does anyone know the number for an emergency swimming instructor"?

That's because if you want to buy shares in UK companies, you come to the UK and the LSE. If you want to route financial transactions around the world, there are many, many ways to do it that avoids Britain. The equation is simple, Chippy... we borrowed ?163.4bn last financial year. Total government debt now stands at ?890bn - equivalent to 62% of GDP. That is unsustainable. How do you get that figure to come down? Even the much-heralded Robin Hood tax 'could' raise ?20bn. Where is the rest coming from? And you'll need even more if you actually intend to *raise* spending? In other words: what is this alternative?
  8. True, but they usually apply an admin fee, which funnily enough usually works out to be about the same amount as the taxes.

  10. Well, it took a little digging, but here are Unite's 'alternatives'... So, the alternative proposed is: - a tax that will never, ever get world-wide support, and so would drive our financial sector off-shore. But if you could get international agreement, how many years would that take? - cracking down on tax avoidance (which is legal, so employing 20000 people would be useless) rather than tax evasion. I am assuming that ?40bn figure is actually the 'Tax Gap' figure from this HMRC Report, which also says that only 17.5% of this (or ?7bn) is attributable to tax evasion. - spend more money that we don't have Cloud-cuckoo land...
  11. Thirdeded. Although Vicki was around for a while, it's a shame that other councillors haven't followed James's lead here. I really think that having a councillor 'on tap' is a brilliant thing to have. James and Barry Jones (on the railway thread) have made me believe that I can have a say on things that really do affect my life.

Hi Barry, Finally got round to checking this and the code that comes up is "105". And if it is any help, it's a Super Off Peak ticket. Loz
  14. Oh no - he is the only decent doctor there. I've had nothing but hassle with the rest. I only need to go about every year or so, but Dr Johnson has been great and the rest rubbish. With Dr J going, it is time to move doctors. Any suggestions?
  15. James, Is there any list of where these garages are? The website is a bit vague.
  16. I do have a vehicle, but do you have to park it there? Frankly I could just do with the storage space.
  17. Where can I get one? That's a damn sight cheaper than self-storage.

Well you have to get your priorities right in life. In any given natural disaster, you should always find time for few cold ones.
  19. Sniff. A bit of nationalistic Aussie pride swelling up in this expat.
  20. I surprised about that LadyGooner. Mainly because: 1) I received a letter last week from Southwark asking for responses. 2) It's status is still down as "Registered" on the Southwark site. Maybe James Barber can shed some light?
  21. Just found this googling around. Look like the lease goes to 2015, but there are BIG plans for the site. The doc is dated Oct 2009.

  25. Sure thing, MP. Would you like a large slab of dead animal with that? I've got some panda out back.
