Will you be attending March For The Alternative?

Well that's the "Worst Fisking Award 2011" wrapped up. -
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12722932 Tarot was getting a bit excited - it's Slovakian, not Ukranian (but all these pesky foreigners are the same, eh?). They are offering the same wage rates as local workers, but don't state what these are (but must be at least minimum wage anyway). Apparently local workers don't want the jobs. According to Tesco, "At a new 24-hour store near Aberdeen, not one person applied to work nights."

Out of interest... what are the wage levels that Tescos are offering?

These are costs directly > associated with the actions of a minority in the > City. I bet you weren't so worried about the nasty banks when Gordon was spending all the money that was gained from the City. Now the party is over you want to keep spending the sort of money the City generated, but have no idea where it is going to come from. That will cause the credit rating to be downgraded - economic lunacy. Cutting back will please the credit raters. This is the main problem with the 'March for the Alternative'. None of them really have a credible, costed alternative. Take the figures from the website you quoted... So, in the wildest dreams of the 'alternatives' you can raise ?60bn. (Even though the ?40bn is a incorrectly referenced figure... it should be ?7bn and the Robin Hood tax assumes zero changes in financial transactions passing through the UK.). That does not even cover the cuts that Osbourn is making... and you also want to spend more!! The UK borrowed ?163.4bn last financial year: you want to raise that figure. You think the banks did some damage to the economy? You ain't seen nothing yet. If these ideas are put into place we are royally screwed. So go on your march. But if you get your way I hope you are still going to be around to take the blame. -

From the website... So, chase some tax that has been hidden by much smarter accountants that the government can ever afford, stick on a tax that will see a huge majority of fancial transaction be redirected away from the UK. Then for added effect, continue to p*** all the money up the wall like we have for the past 10 years. Genius. -
parent and child spaces in sainsbury's car park
Loz replied to dully's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I've said it before... The problem with P&C parking spots is that they are in the prime parking area closest to the store. Not only does this cause people not entitled to use them to grab them, but it is also the busiest, most dangerous part of the car park. Stick them at the back of the car park with a protected walkway back to the store and, voila, problem solved. -
former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?

How do you store a bicycle out front? Very temporarily.

Still eight weeks jail, suspended, seems rather OTT for the 'crime'.

It's a bit of a two-edged sword. There are some good sides in raising awareness, etc, but I'd be concerned if people started to get unnecessarily fearful that people like Cheryla 'don't feel safe any more' and it started affecting their going-out habits. ED is still a pretty safe place, London-wise, but bad things do sometimes happen. Just use a bit of common sense and minimise the risk.

This is my favourite. But this is a pretty close second. Both involve beer. Hmmmm.

Dulwich Hamlets Football Club licence review
Loz replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I don't think anyone is saying they should lose their licence, but there are some lessons learnt here that they need to demonstrate they have taken on board. That could be in the form of increased security training (and, if they have had the practice of allowing the hirer to supply security, not doing that any more) or a written procedure on this kind of issue that they promise to follow. If they can show that, I can't see any problem with them keeping their licence. As DJKQ said, it was the only real incident we've had at the Hamlets. -

Dulwich Hamlets Football Club licence review

I do think that their bouncers need retraining - as another Abbotswood resident I'd prefer they just didn't solve problems in the building by dumping everyone outside and then not calling the police to ensure it disbands peacefully. -
I'm still a bit astounded that they persevered with the 'feed rich and middle class kids' agenda. That's a lot of money that could have been put to far better use.

Depends what you mean. Since the definition of 'poverty' seems to be 60% of median income, no amount of services a council provides will affect the poverty statistics one iota. But that's the problem with aligning poverty to other people's incomes. You create a problem that, practically, can never be solved.

If I was the cynical sort, I'd say Labour are cutting back hard to make the Tory's national cuts look worse than they need be. It's not really in their interest (nationally) to do this in the least pain-free way possible.
