Silly question, sorry, but are there speedometers for cyclists?
Because if not, how do they know how fast they are going?
And how will they (or anyone else) know if they are breaking a new speed limit?
And how will they be identified if they are (as presumably they would be fined?)

This is TONIGHT!
From 7pm in the lovely new lounge bar upstairs at the EDT/East Dulwich Tavern (the pub at the end of Lordship Lane, on the corner by the roundabout at Goose Green).
Please buy a drink at the downstairs bar before you come upstairs, as the bar upstairs won't be open (purely so you won't have to come back down again once you've got upstairs. Well, not immediately, anyway!)
The entrance to the lounge bar is now through a door INSIDE the pub, on the right as you come in through the main doors.
Turn right at the top of the stairs. We will be in the area by the windows.
Please message me on here in good time if you will need help getting up the stairs. I probably won't be checking my phone after 7pm so may not see messages after that, though I'm sure the friendly bar staff would help if needed.
Looking forward to meeting old and new faces.
(I am face blind, so please don't be offended if I ought to recognise you and don't. I often don't remember names either.
I'm just mentioning this as I know I can seem rude otherwise. It's an actual thing. I now have a little card to carry around 🤣 ).

Hey fellow cat owners!
Was hoping that you would consider putting collars with bells on your outside cats?
I’ve wee fledglings in a nest and at the moment I’m defending them against an orange and white dude (I call him Trump) and his nemesis, a lovely Tuxedo cat (I call Elon)… they are quite the double act in my back garden!!!!
It would give the wee ones a bit of a better chance if a bell could announce their approach.
And as a feline owner myself, I know cats will be cats, but every little helps even the odds.
many thanks.
I completely agree.
A cat with a bell comes into my garden and sits patiently beneath the bird feeders.
Sometimes I hear the bell first and can chase him out before he gets there, and hopefully birds can also hear the bell (but only when he's actually moving).
This has got worse since prickly rambling rose stems were removed from fences at the back of the garden. I'm looking at what cat deterrents I can put there.
You have probably done this already, but if not you might want to look at ways you can try to stop the cats getting into your garden in the first place?
It's very difficult. I love both cats and birds, but as you say, cats will be cats.

This is tomorrow!
Would be great to see forum members there!
It's a cosier venue than last time, and hopefully easier to mingle and chat 👍

Two men behind ‘senseless’ felling of Sycamore Gap tree jailed for more than four years
Good to see these two jailed today for four years.
There’s something deeply disturbing about people who destroy trees—any tree. Whether it’s a centuries-old landmark or a sapling in a quiet park, trees are living beings that offer beauty, shade, and life. The men who cut down the Sycamore Gap tree are a stark example of how far some people will go to lash out at something peaceful and meaningful. People who harm nature like this aren’t just destructive—they are often deeply unhappy. It takes a troubled mind to look at a tree and see something to ruin instead of something to protect.
Whilst I agree, I have been thinking about this recently in relation to some of the other posts on here about anti social behaviour.
We are all products of our upbringing - our experiences at home, school and beyond - plus whatever we have inherited genetically which might affect our behaviour (the nature/nurture thing).
So in this case, if people haven't been brought up to love and appreciate trees and other wild things, plus as you say they may be deeply unhappy (or have other undiagnosed issues) it's easy to see how they could have ended up doing this.
Also, it's possible they had quite low intelligence and didn't really grasp what they were doing and the effect it would have on so many other people. But that's just surmise and possibly completely wrong.
From what I've read about it, they seemed to be two mates egging each other on, like two big kids.
I'm not for a minute excusing what they did, and it's right they should be punished, but I really hope they might get some sort of rehabilitation in prison (it would be appropriate to have them do some kind of community service like planting saplings, wouldn't it, or working in woodland conservation).
And the same goes for phone robbers and shoplifters (rehabilitation, not planting saplings), though for SOME shoplifters there might also be other issues at play, not excluding poverty.
Sorry Jasonlondon, I've gone off at a real tangent here, lucky it's in the lounge! Oh oops I've just noticed it isn't. Sorry admin.
Oh, and then there's a whole philosophical discussion to be had about free will and determinism ..... 🤣🤣🤣

What a brilliant idea. I hope it went OK, Sue.
Thanks! I'll find out in a few weeks when I get the results!
It was one of those disconcerting things where a disembodied voice keeps booming at you to breathe in and hold it, then breathe normally.
Apart from that it was OK, all completely painless.
I imagine there will be quite a few people going from ED, though I presume it covers the whole Southwark area

NHS subcontractors frequently use supermarket parking areas for CT and other screening. Easy to get to and park. They've done the same at Dog Kennel Hill in the past. Makes a lot of sense. And they ram in lots of timed appointments, so time critical is precisely right.
Yes, the appointments were scheduled for every ten minutes.
And there is no waiting area at all this time (sometimes for medical checks there they have a very small area inside with 3 or 4 seats).
If you have come by public transport, you have to sit on the steps up to the van if you are early, which isn't pleasant in very hot sun or pouring rain, or else wander round Asda (there's no cafe in Asda, despite it supposedly being a superstore).
It's one in, one out.
I don't know what happens if you are late, but I doubt they would hold up everybody who came after you in order to fit you in.
There was someone immediately before me and someone immediately after me.

That's what I did in the end , so thank you for that.
I gritted my teeth and got some exercise. It wasn't as bad as I expected 😀
I did get a 37 from Nigel Road back to Goose Green on the return journey, though!

You have a 'time critical appointment' at Asda? Righto.
There is an NHS van in the Asda car park which is a local centre for lung cancer screenings.
I'm an ex smoker (haven't smoked for decades but still at risk).
My appointment was at 2pm.
Any other sarcastic comments? Do feel free 🙄

From about 1985 I remember a club called "kings on the rye" . Bus stop was still named after the pub. Its now a rather more pragmatic "Peckham rye / East Dulwich road".
Yes, that was what I was thinking of, thanks!

I remember both, many, many years ago.
And the Kings Arms was at the junction of East Dulwich Road and Peckham Rye, it was huge and was converted to flats. Oh those were the days.
Ah, I remember the Kings Arms I think, though had forgotten the name.
Wasn't it some kind of club?

Yes the bus stop at what was The Kings Arms I believe remains closed,
However the stops at the Heaton Arms (no youngster here) is open.
Easiest way is a 63 or 363 to Peckham Hill street and change for the 78 which takes you directly to the front door or as good as.
Thanks jazzer, jazzer, Jazzer 😀
I don't know either of those pubs, believe it or not, so I will google the Heaton Arms, thank you (and thanks for the tip about the easiest way!)
ETA: Well, I googled it and apparently it was demolished in 2005 🤣 but I guess it was somewhere near Heaton Road.
ETA again: It looks like I can get a 63 or 363 from the stop near the end of Barry Road, so assuming that's open that would be easier.
-
I need to go to Asda in the Old Kent Road tomorrow.
Theoretically I can get a 78 or 363 bus, but it looks as if the bus stop at East Dulwich Road/Peckham Rye may be closed. I don't know why, but I assume it may be due to gas or water works.
Does anybody know if it is just this bus stop, or are other bus stops (or the routes) affected?
I don't want to get a nasty surprise tomorrow, as I have an appointment, so it's time critical.

Would you have jumped down the OP's throat if they'd described the perp as white, 50s, male?
How we morphed from a hurried post about a shop-lifter, to rampant racism, migrants and single mothers, I do not know.
And I thought the thread about hot dogs was hysterical....
A description limited to just " white, 50s, male" would be equally useless in identifying anybody, because it could apply to so many people. What point are you trying to make?
And I didn't "jump down the OP's throat."
The way the thread has developed is how threads work. Different people have different views on things.
And the point about media references to migrants and single mothers was relevant to the discussion.

Focussing on the OP immediately shifts the focus of the post from the antisocial, thieving git that the OP wants to vent about to a discussion about casual racism and in my mind, it's the shoplifter who should be the focus of this thread even though she is unidentifiable. It's all just venting on here in the end.
But it's a forum. For discussion.
You can't control what other people want to say in response to somebody else's post!
Threads go in all sorts of directions.

If you haven't been to the EDT since the refurb, to get upstairs you now come in through the main entrance, turn right and go through the door marked Lounge Bar.
Then go to the top of the stairs and turn right. We will be in the area past the top bar (which will be closed, so please get a drink at the bar downstairs before you come up!)
As said above, please message me in advance if you need help in getting up stairs, and we can arrange it.

The descriptors are
Woman
30s
Black
There is no point in describing clothes as they change. If it was a white woman, descriptors should include hair colour, eye colour.
While sex or race on their own are not helpful, the three descriptors do not warrant the OP to be labelled racist (and why not sexist or ageist while you're at it???).
Sometimes, facts are just that. We know that there is an increase due to financial circumstances, organised crime and mental health.
The real issue is the observation of the temerity and lack of consequence.
Grow up.
How was what I posted in any way childish?
I stand by what I said, that the description given could apply to many people and was not helpful in identifying the person.
It is not clear why it needed to be posted on here at all.

Why jump on the OP more than the shoplifter? It is pretty crap to just walk in to a shop and blatantly steal stuff and it does seem to be happening more often which is depressing. I've witnessed it several times in the last couple of years sometimes with groups of shoplifters who rush in and quickly steal a whole load of stuff. It does seem to me to be becoming more common. It's particularly galling when it's stealing non essential stuff like beer unless the person is an alcoholic and not being done because of poverty and hunger. All it does is put the prices up for those that pay and encourage others to just take stuff too. I guess the OP just wanted to share their anger. Not sure what a lone security guard can do which is also depressing because if there's no consequence for thieves then such behaviour will inevitably increase. ☹️
The original post was about one shoplifter.
Nobody is suggesting that the shoplifter wasn't totally in the wrong, or that there may be issues with what shop staff and security guards can or can't do in this and similar situations.
However a description of a woman which includes only skin colour and perceived age is problematic in my view.

just left co op black lady in late 30s stole beers out the fridge.the people in the store just let her go why ,have you got security man on the door who did nothing .she calmly walked to the bus stop to catch the bus.if you (the thief)are reading this.your a very scummy person.look at the state of this country
That description could apply to many people.
Why have you said what her skin colour was but not what she was wearing?
What do you think will be achieved by posting this on here? If you think the security man should have stopped her, would it not be more constructive to complain to the Co-op?
And what has one shoplifter got to do with "the state of this country"? There have always been thieves.

No, he was utterly un-electable. Any sensible, non-Momentum, Labour member knew this. Corbyn likes to blame the press but that is the far-left modus operandi - find someone else to blame when the problem lies at your doorstep. I know someone who was on his team and they convinced themselves that they had won on the basis of social media. He was a disaster for the party and only Covid and the incompetence of the Tories allowed Labour to recover. Corbyn was on Newsnight last night clearly putting himself back on the circuit in the hope of a Starmer downfall.
This is why Labour HQ does not want McAsh leading the council - they are trying to purge the party of the far-left due to the damage they have done to it and I believe any swing to a more far-left leadership in Labour HQ would be an unmitigated disaster and just be rolling out the red-carpet for Farage. But the far-left won't care they see another opportunity to take over after they fumbled the ball massively in 2019.
