Was supposed to be live music there last night but the guy was sick and it was cancelled :(

We went there last night for a meal. The crab was excellent as were the steak and mushroom pie and Caesar salad (the salad was a zillion times better than Liquorish's version .....) Wine also excellent. If I was being picky, the chocolate brownie was slightly dry - I like them really moist in the middle. Liked the music choice (Beatles to Willy Mason via Leonard Cohen :)) ) but it was on a loop, so when the tracks came round for the second time we figured it was time we were going - not a great idea if you want to keep your punters in there as long as possible! Was sadly empty for a Saturday night though (though we did get there early to be sure of a table in the back room, then moved to a sofa once we had eaten .....but was still far from busy when we left, tennish ....) But we'll be back!

Was it just me, or was the noise particularly bad this morning? Seemed like a load of very loud planes, very close together and very low. And once they'd woken me up, I couldn't get back to sleep again .... :(

There seem to be gas mains being replaced all over London. My theory is that it's related to a fairly recent gas explosion in a house which killed a guy, and which I think was due to a leaking gas main. Not long ago, you could smell gas in various streets around London. I guess they don't want a repetition (and don't want to have to pay out loads of dosh in compensation to the grieving relatives?) Just a guess ....

Hey Keef, if you hate your job, why don't you write a job description for your ideal job, then write your CV around it (if you see what I mean), then send the CV to any organisation/person who might be recruiting for your ideal job? Just an idea :) Many jobs aren't filled by advertising them, unfair as that may be.

Went there last night for the first time, and had a bar snack. The thick-cut chips were excellent, but I was rather taken aback by the very small portion for ?3. I was slightly disappointed by the atmosphere - found the lighting too harsh (and the tealights didn't come out till very late on in the evening ..... though the harsh lighting remained) - whole place felt a bit bare and "cold" (not temperature wise) - hopefully they will have some lovely real fires in the Winter which will make it seem more cosy. Do agree it's the best of the recent incarnations, and the wine was good (comes from Green and Blue apparently) though not much choice by the glass.

What was the tree on the public consultation document, macroban? I can't remember (though I'm sure I would have commented on it in my response if it had been a palm tree!)

Another word in for Ganapati - but Keef, I'm sure they do change their menu - I went once and they didn't have my favourite - I mentioned I was disappointed - when our order came, they'd made me up a little dish of it specially, and didn't charge. Now that's service :)

Please don't blame yourself, it wasn't your fault. In the country at night, you can en hear small creatures squealing as they are carried off by owls etc.. and sometimes in the daytime too. I had a bird of prey make off with a screaming starling in my garden in ED. I know it's upsetting to witness, but basically animals kill each other. It doesn't sound like it was your rat poison that did it.

I've only eaten there once, and the whole place reeked of toilet freshener, which put me off my food somewhat! However the food and service were OK (but we were quite early so they weren't very busy). My gripe with the Herne is their advertising a beer festival via posters with no times on, then closing the beer tent early (I think it was 9.30pm) "because we don't want people making a noise in the garden, but you can buy a beer from the bar and bring it into the garden if you want". Erm, some error in logic there? :))
