  1. ANOTHER Thai eatery? I long for something a bit more novel, like a Vietnamese noodle place an Ethiopian restaurant...something fun. I'm tired all all the Indian/Bengali places around. And its all so expensive! When I moved here I planned on leisurely lunches with friends and healthy dinners with my partner. But blahh, who can afford it? Oooppps totally contrary to the above, a Japanese/sushi place would be nice too. I can't think of a place near by that sells sushi. Anyway, sorry to hear that Rose is leaving; she really WAS great! The older lady with long gray hair in a pony tail selling clothes there now, is a bit grumpy...she might be gone already?
  2. I always see M. Flanagan buying beer at the off license on Upland road toward Lordship Lane...The blue place but I know what you mean about the anxiety of recognizing someone and not knowing from where. I once saw a (somewhat) famous actress in a NY store and asked her if we knew each other (I was living there...I wasn't a tourist). She rolled her eyes and said, I don't think so! Later I realized who she was and have boycotted her (few) films ever since...
  3. Should we start a petition for cameras? I was also mugged on Barry Rd two years ago...

    Halloween

Its Halloween; I am not British .... how do I let folks know that we have candy for trick-or-treaters?
  5. I'm sorry to hear it. We were burglarized on Barry Rd about a year ago. I wonder if we couldn't convince the council to install cameras...or is that nuts?
  6. Hi there It took me ages to sign up cuz they never answer the phone nor called me back. It is frustrating, indeed. Then I called another branch and the lady gave me the direct number to the ED branch. Try that (I no longer have it) or if you are very far away and/or have kids and coming in is a pain, send me a PM and I'll either phone them or walk down there for you. --Today I went in for my usual 45 on the elipitcal and felt really annoyed because they programmed the machines to only go for 20 minutes a time to give others a chance....it wasn't even very crowded on a Tuesday late morning. They're management is off. Anyways, hope I can help you! bianca
  7. I had this flu! It started with a sleepless night, then waves of nausea, night sweats and eventually the total loss of my voice. I kept working through it and ended up hanging on to the thing for six weeks! There is nothing the GP can do for you. I finally started with Lempsip and accepted that I could not continue to keep pushing myself. A few days of total rest is working. This virus is a really awful one. Make sure you take care of yourself. Good luck.
  8. Does anyone know why there are helicopters hovering over ED ALL NIGHT LONG??????????
  9. We came home around 11pm to discover that someone had broken the glass on our front door, reached in and turned the lock, and in this way stole bikes in the hall. They may have tried to enter the flats as well, but we live across from a brightly lit busstop....(one reason for moving in on loud Barry road in the first place). According to the police, most likely, someone was a look-out at the busstop and gave a thumbs up when all was clear and committed the crime. The police said day time crime happens in a different way, most likely folks will walk around, ring door bells and when all is clear, i.e. when the door is not answered, break in then. We are going to put bars on the inside of the door. Still, this is disconcerting. A. They could have made it into the flats, B. we could have caught them, they could have closed the boor behind them causing injury to our persons. This thing happened at about 11, NO ONE heard them? I did hear some noise over the weekend and now think I should have called the police. Why not?! I was in Peckham before the streets were finally repaired. Pipes had been laid out for the next days work. My partner and I were leaving the Cinema when a white van pulled up, 3-4 guys got out and started putting the piping onto their van. People looked out of their shop doors watching...no one did anything. Finally, I called the police. I think we are all too hesitant to call them.... So again, I say whenever you hear something and when sometihng happens as "insignificant" as having one's flower pots stolen, we call the police! I also talked to the council about funding some sort of neighborhood watch, getting more street lights going and so on. I think we all live here for the safety, among other ammenities....so let's pull together. Thank you all for your messages.
  10. We were robbed on the only evening we are out of the house, weekly. Our next door neighbor was robbed on the ONLY day he goes out. This may have been an opportunity crime, but it seems odd. Either way, please take precaution. We are on the Upland Road and Barry Road intersection. Motion detecter lights, Grill on windows and doors and so on. The Police explained that if we call them whenever we are suspicious; even mildly so, they will eventually increase police presence in the area. Hence, please call and report anything you might consider suspicious.
  11. Thank you very much! bianca
  12. HI Yes, I did that. But it also states that meetings are subject to change. I looked for a phone number of Christ Church, to no avail and a number of the local WW organizers, also, to no avail. I don't want to trekk there on Wednesday only to realize that the meeting no longer exists.
  13. Dear All: Does anyone know if there is a Weight Watchers meeting at Christ Church this Wednesday at 9:30am? If not, what other meetings are there in ED? Please PM me; can't keep track otherwise. Thank you! Bianca
  14. I posted a similar message a year ago when I moved to ED. It depends on what's important. For me, I do not like running round hopping from bus to tube and so on. I get on the 63, sit at the top which tends to be quiet, and warm. I get out at Elephant/Castle where there are numerous buses going downtown. On warm days, I get off the 63 near the law offices and walk to whatever destination in the center. My partner has invested in the Boris Bike thing (45 pounds for an annual membership). He gots to the Elephant and then bikes to the Center....its also a lot faster getting back in the evenings. Either way, it sucks travelling to the center, but ED is lovely and you will enjoy living here for sure!
  15. I totally get being bored to death. I don't have kids at home any longer but hate the routine. So, allow me to suggest: Take one of this big city bus tours. It's totally expensive, but it's fun seeing london as a tourist. ahhhhhhhhhhh when we were young we could just spend hours on make up and cocktails. good luck, I HAVE to go to Germany which really depresses me...not THE friendliest country on earth, is it?
  16. There were lots of exchanges in 2008 about the lack of choice here. I am overwhelmed by the Indians; where is that Steak House? A great veggie place for my partner? And Dim Sum for a Sunday morning? Any developments?
  17. Dear All I am to take the 63 to King's Cross tomorrow morning (8ish). Websites read that it takes a "max of 60 minutes" is this reliable? Cheers--bianca
