  1. The Claude books are brill - there's a bargain 3 set from Book People at the mo: http://www.thebookpeople.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/qs_product_tbp?productId=378928&storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=100
  2. Books? http://www.lovereading4kids.co.uk/genre/gr8/Books-for-Boys.html
  3. Thanks both. I think I spy is already considered 'boring' Gesundheit. Great idea Convex.
  4. This makes sense BB though it must be mitigated by having housing nearby that you can't buy into ie only available to council tenants.
  5. Not a school fair, but the Crystal Palace festival is on: http://crystalpalacefestival.org and there are bouncy castles in CP park every weekend. http://crystalpalacefestival.org
  6. It would be interesting to see how Charter students are spread out geographically - I suspect there are a lot more in the Red Post Hill direction because there is housing going right up to the gate whereas in the ED direction there are playing fields, Greendale, Sainsbury's and Dulwich Hamlet. I think it can't be true that a school on the hospital site admitting by distance would just encompass kids already within the Charter catchment when most of ED isn't close enough to Charter.
  7. Have you got any ideas on how I can practise waiting for turns to speak and listening to others' contributions with my son? He's coming to the end of year 1 and is a bit prone to calling out basically because he's so desperate to share what's in his head. He's already good at taking turns with board games etc so wondering if there's anything we can do specifically relating to speaking and listening? Thanks in advance!
  8. 17 minutes is not a prohibitive walking distance. Lots of parents I know walk for 20-25 mins to primary. It's also completely untrue to assert that admittance by distance will lead to lots of kids from wealthy middle class backgrounds to the exclusion of everyone else. There is a wide diversity of people of different backgrounds living near the Dulwich hospital site and as the crow flies admission is likely to include all of the DKH estate.
  9. Find out who the landlord is - may be a housing association - and contact them?
  10. Word of caution on bamboo - it can get really out of control. There may be different varieties but my neighbour planted some a few years ago and they are v tall trees now.
  11. Teach your monster to read website is amazing and free. The Usborne big phonics workbook too. The Book People have got a bumper set of Biff Chip and Kipper books on offer - most will be too hard now but good to have at home for when he's ready.
  12. LondonMix, I guess because all those people had 5 other choices and many may well have got another choice. 13. Climbing to the top of St Paul's is great if you have the energy - definitely not for the little ones though.
  14. Very much appreciated!
  15. Bessemer Grange would love them: Bessemer Grange Primary School Dylways, London SE5 8HP
  16. Can it be a mistake? Why would the DfE be talking to the Department of Health if it was the police station?
  17. It really depends how much you want to spend. The ones in John Lewis and GLTC look sturdy but can cost thousands. If you want something for under ?200 we got a good basic wood one from Argos - it wobbles if someone jumps up and down on the top bunk! But it's strong enough to be safe. Mattresses are extra. http://www.argos.co.uk/m/static/Product/partNumber/1909605.htm
  18. A really nice puzzle book? Take a look at Thomas Flintham's Super-Fantastic Puzzles.
  19. Sue, my guess is that they are not stuck, but that the bin men didn't actually wheel out your bin and tip it upside down into the truck (which I always thought was the whole point of wheelie bins). I've watched the bin men and what they often do is just lean into the bin still in your garden and pull out bags. We always have bits of blue bin contents in particular dropped all round our garden after a collection and if they were wheeling the bin out, tipping it in the truck and then wheeling it back empty there is no way this would happen. 20. We had our doormat stolen a couple of nights ago. Basically you can't leave anything out front at all.
  21. We have one too. But be realistic with your expectations - it has never made any difference to the time my kids get up in the morning.

Sandnot, it's a while ago now but I noticed the bench in our garden had been broken presumably by taking someone's weight coming over the fence and we were burgled the next day. Sorry for the potential alarm but I think it's reasonable to assume someone was scoping - make sure you keep anything worth stealing out of sight of back windows as well as front. And ideally do what you can to make getting over the fence harder eg move the bench.
  23. This makes interesting reading: a third of first-time mothers suffer depressive symptoms: http://www.theguardian.com/society/2014/may/21/third-of-new-mothers-suffer-depressive-symptoms And particularly this bit: 'And more women are depressed when their child turns four than at any time before that, according to the study, which challenges the notion that mothers' birth-related mental struggles usually happen at or after the baby's arrival. The findings have led to calls for all women giving birth in the UK to have their mental health monitored until their child turns five to ensure that more of those experiencing difficulties are identified.'
  24. There's street dance at the East Dulwich Community Centre on a Sat am with Eos: http://eosdance.co.uk
