I was stopped and issued with a fixed penalty notice back in October (MOT had run out - I hold my hands up). The printed form of the ticket said the penalty was ?60, but the policeman crossed the amount out manually and wrote ?100 instead. I paid the ?60 by cheque and now have an increased fine for ?150. My question is can they alter the amounts manually like that? Is it legal? I mean surely they could write in any old amount they felt like? Do I challenge further on this? I don't have the resources for proper legal advice, but this does just feel wrong to me that they should be able to do this. Please help me make up my mind whether to sigh and pay-up with heavy heart, or fight the injustice.

Hollie, I just have to say a big 'Thankyou' for organising this. My mysterious & beautifully wrapped present is sitting on the side (soon to be under the tree), and I get proper Christmas excitement every time I look at it. I think it's one of the best things about Christmas 2013 so far. When I go to the shops I find myself thinking 'it might be you' as I look at the other shoppers on the lane. It makes me smile just to think of it. It's just lovely community thing to do, and I particularly liked the way you advised we structure the box. Thankyou Hollie - and whoever sent me my box - and Merry Christmas :D SWx

two questions - weaning and bottle feeding
sillywoman replied to stacker285's topic in The Family Room Discussion
As everyone else has said. She's just plain wrong - and a bit scarily so on this. The current advice is that weaning should start to happen sometime between 4 and 6 months, when your baby shows they are ready. This is when they show avid interest in food (watching you like a hawk as you eat, grabbing stuff from your fork etc.etc.), and when the tongue reflex disappears (where if you put a spoon in their mouth their tongue automatically pushes it out again). Then they are ready. Door bouncer at 6 weeks? FFS. -

However I have heard very good things about 'Bloomers' before - particularly with regard to Maternity bra's so good call OP for bringing it to the wider family room attention. :) -

Good board games to play five year old?!
sillywoman replied to bee74's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Not strictly a board game but Connect 4 was always a winner here (still is actually). -
Teres Arias is lovely and always happy to go over previous births. It can be very useful (and sometimes quite enlightening) to have someone explain what happened and why as it's written in your notes.

I've never heard the "boys are lazy" thing either and have 'owned' a few for 16 years now. I thought that it was maybe something I'd missed, but seeing the surprise expressed by other family room regulars I think that maybe the OP is hanging out with the wrong crowd? Am looking forward to hearing of Rileys Oxbridge acceptance in the near future.

Post-natal boob job - one for the mums...
sillywoman replied to EDmumma's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hmm, not such a cheery first post EDMumma? But the 'breast consultant' should have told you that it isn't breastfeeding that makes your breasts change (saggy), it's pregnancy and birth. So whatever feeding choices you make the outcome is the same. The joys of being a Mum eh? -
I'm so impressed you can recall his many milestones so accurately. Clearly Riley gets his brains from Mum! :D Mellors, I was looking for the 'like' button for your post. Clearly I spend too much time on FB!

Dr can prescribe Aveeno for dry skin - useful if it's for your child as their prescriptions are free, and Aveeno is lovely, but loveliness has a price!

So a grow of us got together Friday morning to chat about birth. It was low key, we kept it mainly positive, though we touched upon how to manage expectations net time round after a less than positive experience and also other peoples love of horror stories. It was really nice to just hang out and talk 'birth' with other women really. We decided that we will run the group once a month on the first Thursday of the month. We decided to alternate morning coffee and evening wine (non-alcoholic for pregnant Mums!) so that those who work can attend if they wish to. The next session will be the evening of Thursday Jan 9th 7-9pm. For the time being the sessions will run from my front room - it's free and sort of set up for groups, but if a better venue comes available we are open to change. The general feeling was that we would prefer to be a discussion group with a positive approach to labour and birth rather than directly associated with the 'Positive Birth' movement. Some, agreeing with Kes, felt that it did carry strong associations of 'natural birth' - so we're steering clear. This leaves us with a dilemma about our name. If anyone can think of a good name for our ED (no Otta, whatever you're thinking - no, a 'good' name, not a rude one ;) ) please let us know. In the meantime . . . . To reiterate: Next meeting Thursday January 9th, 7-9pm. For venue please Pm me.

The year 8 Cornwall trip is done each year, and has been for many years now. I don't recall when the first letter home about it was, but I certainly knew it was up and coming from the end of year 7 so had budgeted in advance for the instalments. It seems odd that the current year 8 have been taken by surprise by it.

What about the old Police station as a site - is it too small for a secondary? It's certainly better placed to service ED than the ED hospital site. -
