  1. I admit, Oxford Street was a huge mistake on my part, but I count myself in those who are compelled to spend (this year at least). I wish I could make everyone happy with jars of homemade chutney etc but have tried this in the past and the crest-fallen looks have said it all. It seems that chutney is a nice gift if accompanied by something 'proper'! Just a grumble. I recall my nieces all loving the Sheldon the Turtles I knitted them one year - perhaps I should resolve to start thinking about Christmas earlier and not resort to the high street so much.
  2. It's not even Christmas yet and I have lost the Christmas spirit. The streets are full of shoppers who feel compelled to spend ?????s on their loved ones, buying tonnes of useless tat that no-one needs/wants just prove how much they love them. I'm looking forward to spending time with family but can't help but feel over-whelmed by the consumerism and pressure from shops to spend spend spend. Can someone help me regain a little seasonal spirit before I descend on my family with the spirit of Ebenezer Scrooge instead? :(
  3. I drink over 2 litres of water a day. Hasn't done much for my complexion, all it means is I get woken up at 4am with a very full bladder!
  4. I am suffering too with acne. It's all along my jawline and chin which suggests it's hormonal. As a long-term sufferer of acne outside of pregnancy, I thought I'd had solved the problem over the last 18 months... Not so! I have been assured it will pass after the first trimester though. (Sorry, this is my first post in this group, have been lurking for a while though...)
  5. Bobbaz, they have such a machine at the post office near where I work and it has helped reduce queues significantly. The machines are used for posting items using standard delivery and for buying stamps. If you want to send something recorded or special delivery then you have to queue. They operate a ticketing system for the counter services, akin to the deli counter at Sainsbury's, but there are different 'queues' for special delivery and foreign exchange if I remember correctly. Perhaps it's a pilot system that they are considering for wider implementation...
  6. My Dad was once denied a promotion because he was deemed as being 'too honest'. The again, he was working in Local Government at the time...
  7. My work has a policy that you should make 'every effort' to come in to work and that, if you're unable to get in, you should phone your immediate manager by 10am every day that you are unable to get to work otherwise it will be taken as annual leave or unpaid leave if no annual leave remains. That seems fair enough to me, although every effort is subject to personal interpretation so some people blag more than others... Personally I find it an effort to get out of bed most mornings, never mind get to work, but still managed to trudge through the snow this morning to find colleagues from Clapham and other tube-serviced parts of London hadn't made it - grumble grumble grumble.
  8. Let me know when the next one is, I would be interested in coming along...
  9. If there's going to be a 'best baby/toddler group' category can we have a 'best place to pick up single men above the age of 30' category too - just to balance things out a little, for those of us who are pramless..
  10. Is there any update on this - it sounds fantastic and I am looking forward to it opening!
  11. @TommyG - oooh I used to live on Offord Road too!
  12. Too right - not one green space in N1 I care to remember much!
  13. I used to live in Islington but live in Camberwell these days...
  14. "Do we tell the people of Kent and suburbia they have to add to their hour long journey - or the people of Camberwell they have to take a bus that takes all of 25 minutes?" Have you ever actually got a bus along the Walworth Road at 8 in the morning? 25 mins is a total fantasy! And I am alone in not relishing a walk home from London Bridge on a dark, cold, rainy winter's evening via E&C? (?) Perhaps in this day and age the GLA should look to promoting establishing offices outside of Central London so that the poor souls from Kent didn't have to trek so far - Citibank have offices in Lewisham for instance IIRC, thus negating the need for any Kentites to access LB at all.
  15. They also have Denmark Hill as SE3 on their website (which is Blackheath!!)
  16. Has anyone else found that since the expansion to a 'bigger & better' Sainsbury's that some of their favourite items are no longer available at the store on Dog Kennel Hill? I am finding it quite frustrating, especially as the smaller packs of things are being removed with only more expensive alternatives available (what about those of us cooking for 1??!).
