  1. I have seen people cleaning the actual station, sweeping rubbish, painting benches, etc., but they don't seem able to get into the fenced area where all the bottles and papers collect. I remember reading years ago that Southwark or Network Rail were going to let this fenced area grow a bit for the birds... but looks like a vulture wouldn't even go in there, sadly!
  2. When the cabbie rolls down his window I always ask "Feel like going to East Dulwich?" and have never been turned down. I think as ED gets busier, more and more cabs realise that we're not quite in France. Had a very sweet elderly taxi driver the other week and I told him how to get to ED as he said that he hadn't been here in years!
  3. As long as the staff are paying for it, then I don't see a problem with them getting first choice, but if they are just helping themselves when we all think it's going to charity then that's a whole different story.

On a different note, I remember a few years ago Oxfam, as a donation from someone, got to use a shop premises on Bond Street for 8 months and it was all the rage because they apparently stocked very nice items. I think it brought in a lot of money, as it would!

Does anyone know if St. Christopher's is accepting applications??

  4. I've had the same experience with St. Christopher's as well. Bags of really nice stuff I never wore were brought in and the ladies who took them into the back room didn't reappear again for a long time and they didn't bring anything out... my husband and I joked that they just took it for themselves. I know it sounds terrible, but I now take my stuff to the Red Cross in Chelsea because I know they are a credible charity and I've seen them hanging my stuff out on the racks and they ALWAYS say thank you.
  5. About a year ago I was walking by the ED Police station and had a brief chat with one of the officers who was standing outside greeting school children for a tour. The officer said that the building had been sold to (sorry to start the whole rumour thing again) M&S and that within 18 months - 2 years, it would become an M&S. In fact, it was M&S who put that fencing around the building because they were worried about the state of it. The PC said that ED police would be represented by a small office somewhere on LL (donut shop perhaps?) staffed by a few community wardens, etc. I live fairly close to the station and the two times I've had to unfortunately ring them I was diverted to Peckham so am not really sure what they do in that location.
  6. Perhaps I live in a weird part of ED, but my bin men are fantastic. Really polite, always bringing the rubbish bin BACK to the front of the house behind the gate, really nice about taking oversized rubbish away or extra bags that don't fit in the bins. Also very tidy, if anything drops they sweep or pick it up (recycling men a different story). Because there is usually about 4 or 5 of them, I've been tipping them ?30 ever since I've lived here. Perhaps I'm crazy, but they deserve it for taking my stinky nappy rubbish out every week. (I don't post of the forum too often, so please don't scream at me for this).
  7. I also put my tetrapaks into the paper recycling and assumed it was like recycling paper and no one has mentioned anything to me?! I guess the council will say something when they snoop through my rubbish. The Sainsburys own organic juice range is unfortunately not recyclable (saying so on the carton), just FYI.
  8. We too just had our first order from the Bombay Bicycle Club. Our starters were missing all the condiments and no one even mentioned the free bottle of wine to us. When the food arrived ONE AND A HALF HOURS later, it was tepid. I can understand teething problems for a new establishment, but BBC have thousands of other restaurants and should know how to run a take away! No excuse and sorry didn't win us over.
  9. Thouroughly sick of the video store on LL, discs are nearly always scratched and this is quite a pain as I have to try and explain to my daughter why Nemo is jammed again. Plus the Asian girl who works there is just about the rudest shop assistant I have ever had the misfortune to ever come across. I wish that the whole sorry lot of them and their substandard goods would just fold and let a honest reliable establishment open in their place.
  10. A young Asian girl called on our house last Sunday with the same story. It was something to do with a survey in the area about subsidence. She also was keen on finding out a good time to ring us in the evening to discuss it further, but we didn't give her any information. About half an hour after coming to our house, I saw her running down the street giggling with another male "colleague" or whoever. Very dodgy. All this door to door soliciting by power companies/gas companies is also becoming obnoxious. I feel like investing in a "beware of the dog" sign!
  11. I have seen this particular bunch of girls while taking my daughter to the playground at goosegreen, they are very loud and the white bomber jacket wearer seems to call the shots, she always seems to have the collar of the jacket up around her face. Next time I see them I will call the rozzers. No point trying to make a citizens arrest and being done for a racially motivated hate crime. I would strongly ask you all not to try and do anything silly, just report the sighting and leave it to the professionals.
  12. Regarding the big spider with fangs living in the funnel web - it's probably a giant house spider - see link below:

I spent a long time on the internet browsing images of spiders when I saw one of these crawl out from under my sofa the other day and run at top speed across my floor. Apparently, it's mating season for them this time of year so they will be out in numbers, and although they do bite will only do so when provoked. Unfortunately, they are one of the fastest spiders around which isn't a terribly reassuring fact!

  13. I appreciate that in France people are not bothered by the sight and smell of crusting heaps of dogs**t on the pavement but it still doesn't excuse people from allowing their dogs to do it in ed.
