  1. I just had Southern Electric at the door. Mr Sunil Sharma, district manager. He said he was the local supplier and wasn't selling anything (but the coloured A4 prints in his folder implied otherwise). I said I wanted to do some research first so I gave him my first name and phone number and told him to call back next week... I shouldn't have even given him my number of course.

I obviously didn't let him take any meter readings or get into the flat or anything else.

  2. Apologies, one more question about the election. Do you have to vote at your own polling station? I didn't receive my polling card and have now understood that I can vote anyway (with id etc) but my "own" polling station is not on my way home from work whereas another one in ED is (yes I am lazy). For those that voted without a polling card or those that just Know: can you go to another polling station in your area?

    Sorry, boring question.

  3. It's a nice street and has great access to both Lordship Lane and Bellenden Road but parts of it get quite busy with traffic cutting through the neighbourhood to get from one main road to another. I noticed it when viewing a flat there once. Check it out around rush hour and see if your part of the street is affected. Since the road is quite close to the houses you might really hear the traffic.
  4. Dulwich park, followed by a drink outside at Crown and Greyhound (be careful not to order the Sunday roast!)

The greengrocer on North Cross road (quality, speed, staff, price)

A lunchtime drink (and meal) while reading the paper in the Bishop, for the atmosphere and the staff

View of Canary Wharf while walking down Landells road

    Overall residential architecture

  5. Yes, Saturday and Sunday afternoons are the best. Not too crazy about the evenings.

The smoked haddock & parmesan is a good snack, and I miss the chicken and white bean stew. The vegetarian lasagna is good and so is the venison chili.

They should indeed rotate one of the dishes each week and consider the winners for the fixed menu. I'd eat there more often if the menu were a bit more "dynamic". Best staff anywhere in London! I hope these compliments won't make them arrogant - keep it up guys.

  6. Bought some salmon at Moxon's (or is it a plural - Moxons??) today and there was a stand in front of the shop with a girl selling bread from the bakery-to-be, called Luca's. She gave me a flyer that said they'll open in early 2008 - they have a site www.lucasbakery.com

First line of the flyer: "family owned and run we will bake organic hand-made breads, cakes and patisserie from our shop, till then we will be selling from outside Moxon's".

  7. Oh yes, thank you, only now do I realise how eager I was to spill my guts about Royal Mail! Excellent group therapy. But is this really a local thing or is it Royal Mail in general? I've had a horrible experience with mail since I moved to the UK in 2006. I first moved to Crouch End and had issues there too, but it does seem a lot worse here. Letters arriving 6 weeks after posting, magazines being 3 issues behind and cheques not showing up, you name it. I don't care whether it arrives at 9am or at noon and even a day's delay is acceptable, but more than a week is just a joke.

Ok, enough complaining now.. if this is local, can we do something?

  8. We live in ED and a couple of months ago had searches done on a flat we wanted to buy, also in ED. The searches came back with a "failed test on lead in the drinking water" (or "one of the 51 tests failed for lead" - don't remember the exact details). We pulled out for different reasons and now found a new flat, also in ED, and are awaiting the searches.

Has anyone else seen remarks about lead in the water in this area? Is it very local or more widespread? Is it serious or pretty much standard to fail some tests at some point in time? From the searches it didn't seem like the test was done inside the property so it would have been in the public water supply.

    Thanks all!

  9. Someone recommended Tony to someone asking for a reliable window cleaner on the "wanted/recommended" board of this forum. Would it have been Tony himself?

I got his number off that discussion - the first time I called him he called back 2 weeks later, then he said he'd be in the area later that week and would call back about the exact time but never did - and then he called again two months later, asking if I still required cleaning and I said no (I don't like working with people I can't communicate with).

Until now I just thought this guy wasn't reliable in terms of showing up but I now understand the whole thing might be a scam?

  10. No chains ideally. But a good bakery, yes. And a big independent bookshop! One more good bar/restaurant would be nice too... it's mainly pubs and curries now, and the overpriced Chardon. I wouldn't mind a big tapas bar (or Basque pintxos or something similar) on the main stretch of LL (I read there is a tapas bar somewhere but it doesn't seem great - has anyone been there?)
  11. We are often given the wrong videos, we get scratched videos, and now you have to pay when you bring them back (instead of when you pick them up) which means you pay twice if you have an overnight and a three day rental - and you have to come into the store and queue again. The staff are depressed and depressing at the same time and they look like they come from one of those "this is what will happen to you if you smoke" ads. Lovely place, great lighting
