  1. It's good that the council can arrange shields in order to deflect excessive light, but it might be worth questioning why such shields may be necessary. I would like to see the evidence that having brigher and brighter streets leads to a reduction in crime. If it's about fear of crime, sure I can see that people feel safer on a street that is as bright during the night as it is during the day. I'm not sure that's a good enough reason for creating a perma-day in SE22.
  2. Southwark Council changed the street lights in the road were I live recently. It now never gets dark. Several people, on visiting my house, have commented on the fact that it is wierdly light at night. I imagine it's a bit like a Scandanavian summer, where the sun never seems to go down. Anyone else noticed this?
  3. Southwark Council seems to be obsessed with installing speed bumps. How about enforcing the speed limit? I have an old Fiesta and going over one of those bumps, even at 15 mph is uncomfortable. The guys speeding down the road in their BMWs / 4X4s won't give a monkeys if there is a hump there or not (actually, careering over them at speed is probably considered more fun). Speed bumps are such an unfocussed and lazy response to dangerous drivers. It also increases CO2 and creates a lot of noise for residents.
  4. Cowling and Wilcox just over the hill in Camberwell is great for art supplies / stationary.
  5. The Castle sells Scampi Fries, has a pool table, a dart board and a juke box. Unfortunately this once ubiquous model is a fairly rare one for pubs nowadays. It's a shame that they have installed so many plasma screens. You would have thought that the one, huge pull down screen would be enough to satisfy even the most dedicated box watcher (but then I have a bit of an issue with TVs in pubs generally). As well as Scampi Fries, I believe they have Frazzles. They also do cheese sandwiches wrapped in cling film behind the bar. Brillant! Probably be turned into a bad bar in a few years.
  6. Hi does anyone know of a good soft play facility near Dulwich, other than Peckham Pulse? Thanks
  7. Drinking J20 will lower ones inhibitions
  8. Clean up your poo people, or your dog will be banished to Catford.
  9. I don't mean to sound like an alarmist. I actually feel very safe in East Dulwich.
  10. Looking at it again, I think you're right. The overall trend seems pretty static. May this year seems to have seen a bit of a blip compared to 09.
  11. I think the 2.5% increase is for all crime. if you click on the tab for 'Crime Types' and look at violence, it shows a 26% increase (unless I've misread it). The reason I ask about this in particular type of crime, is because frankly levels of violence concern me more than most others crimes. I honestly have no agenda here by the way, in case that is what you are getting at- it just seems like a startling increase in violence.
  12. According to police stats, violent crime is up 26% in East Dulwich (compared to the same 3 month period last year). Stats here: http://maps.police.uk/view/?ll=51.45245390930866,-0.07083982229234037&z=12 This seems like a huge jump to me, although I'm no expert when it comes to these things? What's going wrong?
  13. I had exactly the same problem. Got an HD Freesat Recorder (so kind of like sky plus). It's a good option. You can also rig it up to recieve BBC iPlayer, which I haven't done yet, but will be doing soon.
  14. My baby had a small fall (a bit of a faceplant whilst crawling). Later we noticed a small red mark on her lip, which we put down to the fall (as she has a number of new teeth). It's now a day later and the red mark has developed into what looks like a cold sore. I'm a bit worried about this as I understand that this can be fairly serious for little ones (she's 11 months). How can I tell if it's just a small cut that's gone 'manky', or an actual cold sore? I will take her to the doctors tomorrow and get theri advice, but if anyones had similar problems with their little one, I would love to hear your view? Thanks
  15. I'm hoping for something really edgy and cutting edge. Maybe even experimental / avant garde. a Fat Face prehaps?
  16. If dogs can play poker, I do not see why they cannot use a toilet.
  17. Please can we call a moratorium on the use of the phrase 'yummy mummy'.
  18. Camden = 7 gabillion goths - read some Robert Smith
  19. Take6? Is this a chain? I've not heard of it?
  20. Let's have late licences, but only where a bar is worth spending the extra time in. Adventure bar (who decided that was a good name?) is really very unimaginative. Bring back Inside 72 and let it stay open all night!
  21. My issue with 'Adventure bar' (jeez, I cringe just typing that name) and 'boho bar' (not much better), are not their late licences, but their sheer naffness.

You also have to look at the knock on cost to private sector growth. Public sector workers spend the money they earn on goods and services which generally boost the economy. Also, much of the work they do (which involves infrastructure, educatoin, health etc), does create wealth (it's not valueless work, despite what some would have you believe). This is why it is often better to employ someone inefficiently in the public sector, than pay for them not to work at all. To work out how you balance it all, is exteremly difficult.
  23. In theory, it probably consitutes indirect discrimination, which is unlawful. However, in reality one would have difficultly making a claim. Pretty poor practice though and unlikely to ensure that you're employing the best person for the job. Goes on all over the place unfortunately, especially in the media (which I guess explains T4 presenters).
  24. Anyone got an update on the progress of this (I think the planning decisions have been made now)?
  25. Get some inebriated students to wear them home as hats - they love such capers I am told. I'm sure 'hardman' doesn't like students much (hardmen don't you know). He will be happy as it will have confirmed everything that he thought about students, and you'll be in the clear.
