Charters may fib about catchment areas Kingsdale has been accused of cheating https://www.channel4.com/news/questions-over-london-school-cheating-inquiry Not sure about Haberdashers (it's a nice cycle to Telegraph Hill) and you haven't mentioned Harris East Dulwich Ps this is probably for the parents part of the thread, a safe haven that I never visit.

Oh do keep on posting, this is getting fun. My intention was to examine the government's cycling and walking vision and get views on whether this would work/how it could be delivered. It wasn't a cars vs bikes vs pedestrians thread. I'm an exceptionally brilliant walker, cyclist, driver and motorcyclist (I can't claim the same for sailing, flying but I did have a go in a glider once). I've been knocked off my pushbike several times and motorbike once by inattentive/dangerous drivers. Obviously not representing all drivers. But we are in a world that encourages speed and the thrills of adventurous driving (car ads, Top Gear etc). We don't have a similar culture of praising responsible driving. None of the above were my fault (I can give separate examples of where I was an idiot). Competency for driving is established over a relatively short time, and is last examined for most during the driving test which can mean 60 or 70 years without a check of your ability. Fortunately the car will be taking over much of your decisions, but hopefully most will have switched to mobility on demand by that point, autonomous pods, public transport and active travel and our roads can be freed of many cars (sorry I've slipped into an anti-car post). https://www.intelligenttransport.com/transport-news/86984/driverless-pods-begin-trials-in-london/

I'm confused, I thought people moved here because the schools were so good. Perhaps if the schools are better elsewhere then parents will move from the area, making housing more affordable and as the majority of kids will then go to local schools less traffic in the morning. Would you really be that insane to drive your kids to Croydon and beyond each morning? > Malumbu - you miss the point. Many of the > independent schools that run bus services through > the Dulwich area are schools much further afield > than can be walked of cycled - schools like > Trinity, Royal Russell, Whitgift, St Dunstan's and > Colfes etc. The fact that some are considering > cutting Dulwich from their routes should not be > heralded as it will inevitably lead to more people > using their cars.

Not really sure why anyone would want to do their Xmas shopping at all, as there wont be one. I expect for some who spend days catering and trying to appease the mass family gatherings this is welcome news. PS Lidl have stollen and the like.

This is all excellent news, now it is safer to walk and cycle perhaps parents may walk or cycle their kids to school, and in time let them do this unaccompanied, as we did all those years ago. Perhaps the post is ironic as the school run is the worst time of the day for congestion. > > I have also heard that a lot of the Independent > schools not in the area that run bus services to > pick children from Dulwich are rerouting their > buses away from the Dulwich area as the traffic is > so bad. One wonders if those children will now > need to be driven as a result.

Then you will also know that there are numerous factors cause asthma such as poor housing. The case of Ella is very sad and maybe the inquest may improved things for chidren in the future. Anyway that is speculating on a legal case and let's leave that for another thread (I've regularly posted on air quality). Looking at the cycling vision this is around segregating cyclists from cars and from pedestrians. I'd love it if we lived in a world where the 20mph zones worked and we all lived in harmony sharing the road, and cyclists could position themselves correctly rather than cower near the curb. As you said the roads were generally wonderful in early lockdown (with the exception of the occasional dckhead driver taking advantage of no enforcement of speed limits). Bad driving also applies to cyclists (some bad riders out there) and this can also put people off. Do join one of the Southwark Cyclists Saturday rides, when they are hopefully back after lockdown. Much more gentle. than some of the cycling clubs mentioning no names.... Not a constructive post RichH. Hope I don't meet you on the road.

You are basing your conclusion on a few weeks experience and views that are somewhat skewed by the backlash/hype. And with regards to the last sentence datasets of one. You are obviously not studying science or engineering! So to put my cards on the table I am both a cycle instructor and someone who has worked on driving standards and had a few lessons in advanced driving. Advanced driving isn't driving fast but a much better appreciation of what is around you, anticipating the road ahead and respecting other road users and pedestrians. We wouldn't need LTNs if drivers carried more of the responsibility for safe and sustainable transport. Of course this does not apply to all drivers, and there are other conscientious road users like me. The good thing is that you can get free cycle training, and perhaps a bike buddy too to help improve confidence and road skills. As earlier in this thread, cycling is not necessarily utopia and there are many barriers, including the British weather. Good to see so many other cyclists when I was getting a bike security marked by Franklins today. It all looked pretty amiable, before the rain came down!

You could argue that he is principled, irrespective of his lack of leadership. I feel that there are far worse - Len McClusky and Tom Watson come to mind. Having said that he was caught out when asked about the Queens Speech. The answer is "no I don't usually watch the Queen's Speech". You could follow this with a white lie - I'll catch the highlights later on the news. It's worth bringing in PMs on this Blair. Wont answer question. Which football team do you follow? I like all football teams. Cameron. Aston Villa or any other team in claret and blue (real answer, I don't like football) Johnson. Some distraction and bluff, probably and dead cat, but half of the population will still admire him and find him highly amusing and value his leadership. PS what has happened this site, where are the peeple who uzed to pik up on my bad gramma? (Spelt Shakespeare in the US way).

We are on clay, depending on the age of your house and the type of your foundations you will be more susceptible to movement. As long as you don't lie when taking your policy out you will be covered. Different insurers will have different approaches, some a blanket one when all properties will have loadings/restrictions on their policies in a postcode area, whilst others will ask if there is a history of subsidence and price the policy accordingly. When I was in SE26 most of the Edwardian properties were underpinned following the drought of 1976, but come the 90s some had started to move again, and when they did it could be 10cm in a year (compounded in that area by all the natural streams). Of course what we have now are more extremes, when we did rain dances in the summer as the ground was cracking and now there is standing water.

Tighter restrictions/ second national lockdown aka circuit breaker?
malumbu replied to malumbu's topic in The Lounge
Back to the thread, shocking incompetence. Part of me is hoping that they would get it right (delaying lockdown). But it is groundhog day. Takes me back to March, when I was hoping we'd have a few more weeks of freedom so we could get football almost finished and I could go on my Easter hols. But in retrospect we acted several weeks too late. And the bitter irony is that we are making it far worse for our economy by delaying rather than protecting it. We will now need two inquiries. Trying to look for a clip where Johnson turns round to his party in PMQs like it was a pantomime (oh no he didn't) but his gives to some of the gist -

I'd love to recommend Peckham Town FC, which sells bottled beers on match days. But please don't turn up and spoil things. -

This link may be better https://deserter.co.uk/2020/10/rainy-days-and-mondays/ I found myself agreeing on half of the pubs, the other half I loathed. Not sure if they are the deserters faves (good shout for Con) or just known pubs with canopies etc. -
And Shalespear? Or can we excuse that too because they were different times (returning to defending hate crimes)

No that was 170 years ago in Hyde Park, there may have been a lot of space to socially distance but I haven't got a time machine https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Exhibition#:~:text=The%20Great%20Exhibition%20of%20the,May%20to%2015%20October%201851. -

Greater Manchester authorities consulting on the franchising model but a decision was put back due to Covid. Maybe just let the private bus companies go bust? Oh, no, they are being propped up by the State (what an ideal opportunity to nationalise the buses and trains) https://tfgm.com/future-travel/bus https://www.local.gov.uk/lga-concessionary-fare-funding-being-used-prop-private-bus-companies https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/apr/02/bus-firms-get-400m-bailout-to-maintain-services -
He's quite pleased to be going on gardening leave. Spoiler alert, I'm watching HIGNFY (online audience) - that was the fist comment (gardening leave) but some interesting things on other key issues. The programme is hit and miss in terms of connectivity. OMG Hislop has just quoted me.

I heard that Starmer had collided with a cyclist, it wasn't Jezza was it? The Leader of the Labour Party may have been doing a u-turn, something his predecessor generally didn't do. Which leads me onto today's report on antisemitism and the Labour Party. Corbyn's not great at showing humility. He doesn't quite go to the same level as Livingstone. I suspect that there is a point about the stance of the right wing press (who have had plenty of blood on their hands in earlier times when it comes to tackling fascism). But a sorry for the hurt wouldn't have gone a miss, maybe something even more humble.

Sorry goes without saying that the model is London was better than the rest of the country - noting that those doing well like Reading and Bristol maintained some level of local authority control. And better funding. This allowed a more connected/integrated approach to local transport. Ken got to keep control of the buses under a deal that privatised the tube network. Other metropolitan areas are now following TfL's franchise model (not sure how far this has got). Not sure how much demand was driven by better services or whether Londoners are just more prepared to use the buses. -
Link to wonderful lockable bike racks - not a replacement for residential bike storage. Dream of this sort of thing and not needing to travel with heavy bike locks. https://bikeep.com/smart-commercial-bike-rack/

In deed, there should be a pavement code for pedestrians, who should wear lights including brake lights, have mirrors, and indicate. I've posted this before, but only semi facetious ie how many times have you almost walked into someone who suddenly stops to check a text, or have to suddenly brake as someone crosses the road without looking on their headphones.

On bus patronage London bucked the national trend for many years, in the rest of the country buses are often seen as 'poor people's transport'. Generally a different attitude in the capital, helped by huge injections of cash, a relatively modern fleet, regular service, cashless payments, etc etc. Decline in part due to changes to road management lengthening journeys - doesn't take much for people to use cars again. So (whilst not jumping on anti-LTN bandwagon) changes have to be managed carefully. But of course we are in a strange new world. I'm after pubs that are properly following the rules - track and trace, hygiene, at-table service, staff with protective equipment, controls on in door (household/bubble) and outdoors (rule of six). Some were very lax. We could all abuse the rules, whether we meet outdoors in a pub or in a park. That's an issue for another thread. Thanks for the recommendations - I know most of the places well but plastic grass was the final straw for the Dulwich Woodhouse, a place I adored up until the 00s - younger/newer residents wont know how wonderful it was. But again that's for another thread. One thing not so keen on is needing an app to order. Don't mind on-line booking, which can be a good thing on the T&T.
