  1. I would get perspex and drill holes in the right places, then use cable ties to fit really tightly. Alternatively you could buy polycarbonate sheeting from B&Q and do similar. Then you can make it even higher than the banisters already are.
  2. Thanks Tessa, you help is much appreciated
  3. Yes but it was never called East Dulwich Hospital...
  4. Haberdashers' Aske's Dulwich School HADS Doesn't need an 'East' the Hospital never did... If JAGS is ok and used as an official acronym then why not?
  5. Yes to Virasoothe etc but also dose up on children's antihistamine for the itching
  6. YouTube StampyLongNose if you want an insight in to the world they inhabit. He's famous, and seems a lovely guy. Mine crowd round and watch him touring minecraft worlds. He's got millions of views. He was on Breakfast TV the other day and is making a TV program with Jack Black; just from being affable and videoing himself playing Minecraft! The mind boggles.
  7. I think it would be great for Southwark children if this was not a competitive bid, and, knowing lots of parents in the North of the borough who are VERY worried about secondary schools I would have thought it would be something that would be welcome all round if a site could be identified there too.
  8. It would be a free school and as LondonMix says non faith and non selective, and co-ed. Its a non-political steering committee leading the way with the secondary application and we have Haberdasher's Askes officially on board as a provider of the school in our applciation (as well as support form 500 local families so far). James Barber is the councillor who initiated the steering group - and he has put in a 'right to bid' application for the site. This is a very new way of asking Parliament to consider the use of government land - and the Dulwich Hospital site is the one of the first (if not the first) such applications - since it only came into existience in January. So we shall see what happens with it and whether this might enable a use for the site other than a developer buying and building residential - as could so easily happen. Healthcare would still be part of the site in any event I think.
  9. You must have seen posts asking for members of steering committee? On this very forum.... Can't imagine where you think we may all have come from to spontaneously appear with a pre-made decision. Middle age is what happens after you have children, perhaps when they reach, maybe year 3 at school, when parents then might start to think about what school they might send their children to after primary. Not sure what the problem is with that one... For what it's worth I believe in state education of the highest standard for all, and for schools to have a true reflection of the diversity of the locality. I believe this benefits everyone. What's not to like?
  10. It's not political. I am not a Liberal Democrat. Members of steering group are cross party, support is cross party. James has stuck head above parapet, he's not 'leading' in terms of decisions. We've only just been able to announce our choice, but we did have a choice (fantastic!!!), and as soon as we can we'll have a whole questions and answers document ready for you to see what we considered.
  11. Speaking for myself I have children in year 1 and 3, so my own children are the reason I'm on the steering group. Others will no doubt comment too, but I am almost 100% sure that each and every person on the group also has children they hope will go to that school, excepting James, who is representing his constituents who have those children of that age.(regardless of politics, he's been elected, that's his job). For what it's worth I'm not a member of a political party. If you are talking demographics I can hold my hand up to being white and (as of a few weeks back, gulp) over 40. Steering group people are whoever came forward first - I'm not sure what else we could have done in that regard.... really I don't - and that's a whole issue in itself - perhaps a wider one. You may have noticed that we've had a lot of public and private discussion about ensuring the entry system is as fair as possible and that we find a way to ensure that all socio economic groups get a fair chance to be part of a great school. I for one dearly want my children to be able to go to a great state school accurately reflecting the true make up of the local area. We are lucky enough to have that as our primary school currently - that's all I want from secondary education.
  12. Also note that although not near in terms of catchment, Haberdasher's is really near geographically (it took me less than five minutes to from East Dulwich yesterday)
  13. I'm part of the steering group - from our discussion it seems very do-able to have a school ready in time for 2016, given that of course it would only be year 7 starting. In terms of support for those children starting at a very new school I have been part of discussions and I'm reassured and more than confident that support from an established federation would be to hand continually.
  14. Yes it's @NewSchDulwich and www.facebook.com/NewSchDulwich
  15. If you can get a good deal stay at the Standard High Line without question. That's in the meat Packing District. That's comparable to Shoreditch in distance from centre, hipness, and interesting urban stuff. Its also got incredible views downtown and uptown, has three different very nice restaurants, a bar/nightclub on the top with roof garden, and also is directly straddling the High Line - Google it - its incredible - the best way to see all sorts of bits of NY you'd never normally see.
  16. What Matt said, and of course what Mark said... You might be interested in the results of a paper by Emma Jackson at the Department of Geography, King's College London. Its all about comparing the 'gentrification' of Peckham with another broadly similar area - Brixton. Turns out we're a little bit different... 17. Aha, I think times have changed - that sounds like it was a while back - they didn't used to take external bookings until last summer. Do come by and I'm sure you will be welcome
  18. It would depend on specific gig, how well they know you, and so on. Bingo is on a Saturday and the members like to use the hall. Janice is the events person. Club is fairly new to booking external groups - so its working out what works best for everyone. They are trying to formulate proper booking arrangements - and also to make sure that we know who is booking, how late they want to go on, and so on so that charging can be done appropriately. We also want to get good relationships with those booking, and these will grow - especially if we can get groups in who are well organised with good security and people management and so on; which we really welcome. Every arrangement we make at the moment is new - so they are all negotiatied case by case with Janice and Charles the president. The club is all about local community - and not just music - so variety is definitely what's needed We've had some great things happen and so far most involved have been happy.

  20. I will - do follow twitter and facebook for really up to date stuff
  21. I just want to add my thoughts as I know people actually do look at this forum occasionally. 8 am is no good for anyone, but if you have three small children it's virtually impossible to make a coherent call at that time, not even taking into account that so much is going on at that time. I understood from speaking to receptionists the other day that it was no longer 'essential' to ring at 8 am. Having rung at 9 and 'no appointments today' I realise this is not true. On further discussion I realise that there are appointment pre-bookable, if you ask specifically - after 6.30pm and early morning, but obviously only for those people who presistently ask or moan on being told 'no appointments bookable' Its inconsistent and not fair if you aren't the type to get upset down the phone
  22. Oh and four star review in the Times too for the Bowie gig. We hope to bring you some more of similar... http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/arts/music/livereviews/article3956001.ece
  23. Glad you enjoyed the Bowie gig - - I'm one of the organisers. If you like the club do join! membership for 2014 is now open, and we really need lots of locals to come, join, get involved, and above all USE the place. Its definitely a case of 'use it or lose' it. Membership is ?20 PA - and you need to go and have a few drinks there - and get the signatures of two existing members to join. Mewmbership forms are avaialbel from the club - ask for Charles or Janice The club is available for booking form external groups - as you can see above; negotiable rates depending on if you are a community or nonprofit group and so on. There's plenty of room, three bars, a snooker room, garden. There have been some great evenings there in 2013 - so roll up. We have a Burns night evening this month with reeling and haggis run by one of our members. There's yoga starting too, and quite a few other things going on which I will try and post. If you join and get involved you can of course suggest any new activities you want to happen/run yourself ;-) http://www.peckhamliberalclub.org/ https://www.facebook.com/pages/Peckham-Liberal-Club/233915243450505 @peckhamlibclub
  24. Sending support from a mum of twins who breastfed. I did get what you had once or twice, but I did as you are and pushed on through. Hot baths for certain. I know a visit to the docs can be difficult with twins, but you might needs antibiotics. It might not sound a nice proposition, but you don't want to get any iller, and you might need them to clear it up in the longer term and allow you to breastfeed easier and longer. How old are they? I wouldn't try and reduce supply at this stage as you probably want as much milk through the system to keep infection away. I would say diet is key when breastfeeding twins. Make sure you are eating enough, and don't ever go hungry, your body will send all nutrients to the babies, and thus you will be the one to lose out if there's not enough energy in - hence more chance of infection. I found I had to have two lunches to keep going - so I had porridge with cream and fruit in the morning, then a lunch at 11.30am and then another sandwich or something at 2ish. Never go out without food. Also remember you de need a good amount of fat to feed twins- so high fat is ok, and so is protein. Oatcakes and cheese or peanut butter are good to take out with you. I found I got incredibly hungry with no notice - and energy levels dipped instantly. Oh, and water of course You probably know all that, but good to know especially when confronted with a health visitor or GP who may know less than you on the subject (easily done) Good luck - message me if you want any other advice J
