My name is Belinda Brown and I am a local resident and also a researcher at the UCL Centre for Transport Studies. I am interested in alternative forms of car access such as car share, car hire and car clubs. To try to understand more about how these could work I am doing a survey about how transport patterns and lifestyle fit together. I am interested in everyone's experiences - drivers or non-drivers, passengers, car club members or people who hardly ever use cars. This survey has until now been located in the lounge and has also been circulated through local schools. The schools have been selected by the number of car club bays in the 'catchment' area and the predictability of the school 'catchment' area. I am now putting the survey into the family discussion area in order to give those parents who haven't seen the link yet a chance to raise money for their local school, or, if they prefer to they can contribute towards ALD life (more information about this charity is below). This includes organising activities and events for affected children, funding for treatments, support to the hospices which assist affected families, funding for research as well as online advice, information and support through their website. Another great place is yellow moon - http://www.yellowmoon.org.uk - if you are looking for stuff for kids rather than adults. In Brixton there is a good art supplier for adults (and kids too)- above the pharmacy after the bridge which is on the right when you come out of the station.

Thanks ????. I will. Whatever I say will be heavily qualified. Basically I was going to go door knocking and do postal surveys - by doing it online I have saved time and money and the latter is being used as incentives which are all going to good causes. It is a small pilot project which I hope will lead to something more ambitious and rigorous. I am gathering a lot of interesting and valuable data - through questionnaires but also through the interviews I am doing.

You mean Shere Hite (my husband calls here Sheer hate?!) I guess it is difficult to get a representative sample of the population to fill in questionnaires about how they achieve orgasms (that was her research - why??). But that is not what I am asking - just questions about car use - can someone now fill in the 50th EDF questionnaire! ???? Now people are viewing it but they are not taking the survey...

All I was trying to do was stimulate interest so that I would get lots of responses and stop this sinking to the bottom where nobody was seeing it. And no you aren't the only people answering it.

Here are some fascinating facts coming out of the survey.... - 78% of people use public transport for family days out in London.... - 76% of people walk when talking their children to visit friends.... - Of the 92 % that have heard of car clubs, 13 % are members - 31% of people have hired a car in the past year (that surprised me) - 59% of people walk for 20 minutes more than three times a week (I do believe that is quite a bit higher than average) - People visit their local shops MUCH more frequently than their supermarket or the shops near where they work (90% once or twice a week or more! The local traders must love us) - 51% of people have lived here for over 10 years! - For the great majority of people their extended family (parents, siblings parents in law etc) live over 100 miles away... - Good access to public transport and shops within walking distance are the most important factors influencing people when they are choosing where to live And that's all for now ...wait till I get to the correlations!

I wasn't thinking about it in relation to car club at all - I was just wondering whether thinking about benefits to ones own health etc would be a better motivational factor in reducing car use than the environment has been...I certainly wasn't imagining car club promoters pushing that one...

Talking of costs and benefits - in my last bit of research I found lots of evidence linking car use negatively with physical activity. Those who used cars less had higher levels of active travel/ physical activity, lower BMIs (body mass index), rates of obesity etc. And all these bits of physical activity have strong health implications. Do you think that if people were aware of the health costs of car use and benefits of short walks e.g to bus stops etc - this would change their attitude towards car use? i.e, increase awareness of costs of car use relative to benefits?

hmmm another thing I hadn't thought of....

I want to know if someone who doesn't run a car but who has access to car club ever really misses having their own private car - are there situations which can't be solved by public transport/ club car/ taxi/ car hire/ bicycle....?

Can you think of any negatives to not owning a car? Any times when you really feel it is a problem?

Hi Huguenot - I just want to stress that I am doing academic research not market research . Part of the reason why I felt that maybe it wasn't such a good idea was because some of the discussion didn't seem very useful (although I hadn't actually given consideration to how someone might carry their golf clubs to the club car), but actually your last posting has made it all worthwhile - and if quoting (don't worry all anonymously) I'm sure if 'fanny magnet' will liven up an academic text!

Hi pk and ???? I suppose it seems obvious that people have kids and no car. What I want to find out in my project is how their lifestyle,quality of life etc would differ from those who had a car...but I'm not sure if doing research on a forum is a good idea... djkillaqueen - so yes some people do have to drive to work - but what's interesting to me is why? Is that cause of bad public transport connections in a particular direction, is it cause of needing car at work, is it cause of errands that need to be done to and from work....but maybe really a forum isn't a place for doing research! just trialling a new methodology...that's how I'd put it...

Hi Peterstorm - re that report - I think those researchers are just incredibly rigorous - unless there is completely watertight evidence for something - they probably wouldn't use a stronger word than implies. There is evidence I think about people leaving car clubs. Usually I think they are people who have found they use it so little that it isn't worth being a member. I doubt whether joining a car club would actually encourage someone who had never owned a car from buying one - I think it would be more likely to delay them buying one but I'm open to persuasion. It would be good to interview someone who had stopped being a member. Re Jeremy's point about longer journeys yes that makes complete sense but I would also agree about the train or car hire company. I am getting the picture of car clubs fitting into quite a specific type of journey....

Hi Admin I just had a thread which I started "should car use be subsidised by the state" or something like that shut down on the grounds that is was starting up a new thread about car clubs. The subject is not about car clubs (although both subjects fall under the category transport), and therefore it really doesn't seem fair to shut it down. I notice in the drawing room section there is an introductory bit which says " I hope that all contributions will still be of the high quality we've had so far, but just to allow discourse to flow more freely and hopefully encourage more people to take part". I feel that shutting my thread is preventing discussion flowing freely and discouraging people from taking part. My thread got two quick responses. If you really think it is justifiable to shut the thread down, please explain why. Thanks.
