  3. Did I just spot Kevin McCloud filming in Bawdale Road? Another Grand Design coming to town? There was certainly a film crew shooting something. There's one of his Grand Design houses tucked behind Landells Road, and another in Peckham.
  4. Reg, I think the fact that nobody responded suggests nobody who uses the Forum is involved with the Constitutional Club, which probably says something about the Club and also about the Forum, though I'm not sure what.
  5. Salsie, 5Live said the same thing at about 3pm, as far as I know it's not true, just a rumour that has become fact by virtue of being mentioned on the radio. (Somebody correct me if I'm wrong)
  6. Lloyds TSB by the library is closed today (on police advice). Huge queue at the Sainsbury's opposite and the PO/grocers were shutting up when I popped in 20 mins ago. Mag and a couple of shops are boarding up as a precaution. Suddenly I'm looking at members of the public and thinking 'are you loitering, or just calling a mate on the phone?', this is just so wrong.
  7. Does anyone else think of Denmark Hill station as being 'honorary East Dulwich' on the basis that many of us commute from there? Anyway, the scaffolding over the platforms is part of the project to provide lifts, and the station will end up looking like this. Good news for those of us with buggies.
  8. They may not close. It depends partly on whether people like us give them enough business to keep open.
  9. So Tony Rabbit, are you a local "Business Angel" who could help them revamp their shop? Assuming they wanted to, of course. What low margin items shouldn't they be selling, which high margin iterms should they be selling? Actually I'm reluctant to discuss this further online, but if there are local people who can help out shops like this by offering appropriate support then the community is all the better for it.
  10. The newsagent at 100 Lordship Lane (close to Curry Cabin) is up for sale. Times are tough for newsagents, particularly because of the decline in newspaper sales. Lots of shops have closed on LL in recent years, but if this one closes it'll be the first one that I'll really miss. It's so handy to have a place round the corner for photocopying, magazine, envelopes, Oyster top up etc, and if the price of the stationery is sometimes higher than elsewhere, well it's worth those extra pennies for the convenience. The guys who run it have always been really helpful to me, too. If they have to close I wish them well, but I'd be delighted if their fortunes change and they stay in business.
  11. Happy to report a nest of goldfinches in a tree near Colwell Road, beautiful birds, though noisy. By the way, although this thread is called the Nature watch, it should really be called "ED Wildlife Watch" since as far as I can tell almost all the posts are about creatures. Would it be divisive to start a parallel thread called East Dulwich Tree Watch, so that discussions about trees can happen there rather than get buried in this all-encompassing Nature thread ? Just a thought...
  12. Not really GCSE maths, but there's a family maths talk at the Dulwich Festival http://www.dulwichfestival.co.uk/index.php?q=content/maths-magic-and-mystery
  13. Anyone found ways of doing maths with your teenagers without them realising that you and they are "doing maths"? Games or particular household jobs, for example.
  14. Some good points made above, though at least with vectors and trigonometry there are direct connections that can be made to the real world, they apply to 3D graphics for example. But factorising equations is a level more abstract, hard even to convey to a teenager what it's about, let alone when it might be applied.
  15. What do you think about the maths that your teenagers are being taught up to GCSE? My curiosity has been aroused because I've been trying to help a struggling teenager with factorising equations. Her question "why do I need this?" is not an easy one to answer in her circumstances. (Apart from the answer: "Because it'll be in your GCSE exam.") I'm wondering which aspects of GCSE maths give parents the most grief, for whatever reason.
