  1. Cinema 1 at the Ritzy is hopelessly designed and the screen itself is too small but it's the best of a generally poor selection of indie cinemas in South London with Greenwich picturehouse a close second. The best in terms of programme and overall experience is the BFI on the South Bank. Not only does it show a great selection of films but the social aspects are really well conceived and integrated. It'd be interesting to know if City Screen (who run the Ritzy, Greenwich and Curzon Soho) saw a potential market and venue opportunity in ED given the demographics and the gap in provision.
  2. ..it would be Keane, or Kooks or The Fratelli's: white, uninspiring and banal, but likes to think of itself as independently-minded,grown-up, cool, articulate and a little bit edgy.
  3. Locale's menu is bland and overpriced. The service is miserable and the staff clearly have not been trained effectively. The design environment is poorly imagined and executed. Cheap and nasty materials are riddled throughout the place. Only Franklin's and the Palmerston can stand up to any reasonable culinary or service scrutiny in East Dulwich. Someone with a bit of ambition could make a killing here. I'd like to second the shout-out's for Chez Bruce, Wild Honey and the Anchor and Hope but also suggest benugo at BFI Southbank (which you could combine with a film) and further afield, the Ledbury in Notting Hill, which has got a great vibe, good, intelligent design and exquisite food.
