  1. Indeed jim. Who was it that replied, upon being asked how he would like his hair cut,'in complete silence please'. ...oh god, that was Enoch Powell. Forget I mentioned it...
  2. This morning at Peckham Rye didn't look too good so I jumped on the Thameslink. Anybody used Southern to ED or Forest Hill this afternoon?
  3. Thanks for the advice. Take your point about the new redevelopment, Ratty. I suppose every route into Lewisham is chokka at the moment. If it gets any worse I'll use the train but it's just so convenient to have the car for the journey back home!
  4. Once in a while I drive from ED to Lewisham during the early evening. I usually go through Honor Oak and Ladywell, which was fine up until a year or so ago, but now the traffic build-up on Honor Oak Park and Ladywell Road is so bad that that what was once a 20 minute journey is taking 45. Does anyone else do this journey on weekday evenings and, if so, have you settled on a better route? Thanks.
  5. This thread came up on a search and I just wanted to revive the discussion further up the thread around the acceptability or otherwise of renting to be near a preferred school. We were thinking of renting out our house next year and moving closer to our preferred school because proximity is one of the admissions criteria. The school says short-term rental is not allowed, but what about longer term rental? Going by the earlier comments, this seems to be frowned upon, or even against the rules, but why is a decision to rent any different from selling and buying nearby? If we rent for a minimum of a year, doesn?t that satisfy the ?no short-term? rental criteria? It was suggested that the offer of a place could be withdrawn if you have another property ? is this really the case in Southwark and is it documented anywhere? I expect I?ll cop some flak for what we?re proposing, but it is a genuine long-term plan and buying and selling in that time is not really an option.
  6. I think ClareC has a fair point. But personally I?d go further: I do have something against faith schools. If the school is taking taxpayers? money then the selection criteria should be relevant and appropriate. It should be based on educational needs, proximity to school and siblings. Having the same invisible friends shouldn?t come into it; but when that is the principal joining requirement of the school it inevitably results in a disproportionate number of non-local pupils. The school-run traffic and anti-social parking will clearly become worse.
