  1. Thanks for this! Even though we're in early days of heat pumps the evidence seems to be getting stronger and stronger that people are happy with how they work. https://www.nesta.org.uk/report/heat-pumps-a-user-survey/

  4. Second what others have said about Better (Lambeth and Lewisham), I live in East Dulwich but alternate between the excellent pools in Forest Hill and Brixton. Just do pay as you go on the app.
  5. I tend to get on the bike and go to either brixton or glass mill in lewisham if I have the time, both are smashing pools and you can usually get a slot the day before (maybe a mistake to put this on here?!). I live really near Dulwich Leisure centre but gave up on that one a long while back to be honest as its like swimming in a traffic jam. Having said that, I sometimes check on the morning of the day for dulwich or camberwell and some have freed up - I'm not a member of either better or everyone active (unless you count the free swim and gym) and I think it probably is people with a paid membership booking up slots then sometimes releasing them on the day they were planning to go.
  6. Unlike Southwark, Lewisham publishes a map of the furthest distance offered by secondary schools last year. You can see that all on-time applicants to forest hill boys were offered a place (I think this is for Sept 2019 start). https://lewisham.gov.uk/myservices/education/schools/school-admission/applying-to-start-secondary-school/school-admission-distance-map
  7. Very happy with how it is being taught at Heber, they follow this curriculum: https://whiterosemaths.com I guess all approaches will have pros and cons and the main thing is that the teachers are good and supportive. We don't have homework but one times table task a week.
  8. Thank for that info, do you think that distance was on offer day or after that Bellendenbear?
  9. Hi Renata, did the council publish the % children getting their first choice, etc? It doesn't seem to be on theirs website. Also I think in previous years there's been some sort out drop-in help sessions, do you know if any area being held?

    Callows

Had a chap from Callows locksmiths round this morning, who fixed something really minor that was one of our botched DIY jobs rather than the new lock we thought it was going to be - he was on time on the dot, very pleasant professional and helpful. 100% recommend.
  11. Here's the flyer for the Peckham rye picnic, and more info here: https://m.facebook.com/SPACEFairFund/
  12. Well said Carbonara for your response, anyone who cares about having successful state schools both in London and the rest of the country should try and spend five minutes on this - a number of the secondaries have had parents meetings to explain to parents the kinds of cuts to education these funding cuts will mean, such as reduced subjects offered and larger classes. Many of the primary heads are saying that they cannot see how they can manage these cuts without job losses. No one is trying to use education as a political football here - this parent-led campaign is cross party and MPs of all parties are opposing these unreasonable and counterproductive cuts to education. So please see the links above. It is not difficult to complete the government consultation itself - you can find it here: https://consult.education.gov.uk/funding-policy-unit/schools-national-funding-formula2/consultation/intro/ and a short guide to completing it here: http://www.fairfundingforallschools.org/act-now.html (closes this wednesday 22 March) Everything else you can do is on this page: http://www.fairfundingforallschools.org/act-now.html
  13. Many on this forum have an interest in the East Dulwich Schools their children go to or hope to go to. You may have heard about the national funding formula for schools that the government is seeking to introduce. While most people would agree that school funds should be allocated fairly, the new formula takes significant money away from some schools, including the majority of London schools - with Southwark particularly hard hit. Combined with other changes such as cuts to the education services grant and school inflation, this means funding cuts for local schools by 2019 like this: - Goose Green School - ?1,003 per pupil or equivalent of 10 teachers - Goodrich Primary School - ?855 per pupil or equivalent of 11 teachers - Heber Primary School - ?890 per pupil or equivalent of 8 teachers - Ivydale Primary School - ?951 per pupil or equivalent of 11 teachers You can see breakdowns for all schools on www.schoolcuts.org.uk. A letter from Southwark Heads - representing all the headteachers across Southwark - says: ?The biggest losers in this will be the children. This level of cuts can only result in job losses and this will have a direct impact on children?s outcomes. Simply put, there will not be the appropriate numbers of staff to meet the needs of the children. The quality of children?s education will suffer as a result.? https://www.southwarknews.co.uk/news/southwark-heads-say-children-will-biggest-losers-ahead-funding-cuts/ The government consultation closes 22 March - next Wednesday. If you have five minutes spare please use them to respond to the consultation, write a quick email to the Secretary of State and sign the local and national petitions. A very clear, simple guide to what to do is set out here: https://southwarkfairfunding.wordpress.com/about/2nd-child-page/ Southwark heads, governors, teachers, MPs and councillors are all speaking out about this serious risk to our children's education. But parent pressure needs to be loud enough to make the difference - please do what you can to have your say before 22 March.
  14. A couple of days a week I use this one in Loughborough Junction which I really like. I have tried out a lot of these spaces and found they either tended to have loud music or be really expensive (or just too trendy for me in the case of the bussey building!). You can either pay by the month or by the hour if you think you're not going to use it that much, I alternate between the two depending on how much I need to work there. https://www.neardesk.com/locations/details/108
  15. Well done to your son and it is lovely that he is keen to continue.. from the instruments I played I couldn't imagine swapping instrument by that age but I know you have to consider all options, sorry you are faced with this dilemma... some ideas: Contact Camberwell Choir School - they have lots of instruments that they will be using for the many children that attend but they may have contacts in terms of their own donors? And would want to be helpful I'm sure Can the school/his music teacher/the council help at least with ideas of how to get hold of a instrument or any ideas of hardship grants/help that might apply? http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200043/extra-curricular_activities/1049/musical_instrument_tuition_and_provision don't think Southwark are great on this but migth be worth giving Bromley Music Trust a call see if they have any leads. I am sure there must be various charities that either do grants or loans to help children keep learning in this situation - haven't searched properly but the first link on this page from the Princes Trust looks like one: https://www.princes-trust.org.uk/need_help/next_steps/your_next_steps_in_the_uk/alternative_sources_of_funding/funding_for_individuals.aspx good luck with keeping him playing!
  16. Haven't used it for a long time, maybe 2,3 years but when I did the staff there were absolutely lovely, and I'm sure I've Seen at least one or two of them still there. So no recent experience but I do have friends who use it who seem happy as far as I know.
  17. For anyone who has not yet seen or signed this petition https://www.change.org/p/david-laws-mp-don-t-squeeze-two-schools-onto-the-dulwich-hospital-site - asking David Laws MP, Minister of State for Free Schools, to prioritise getting a new secondary school for our area on the land left when dulwich hospital is developed into a new health centre, please do consider signing it, especially if you, like me, are intending to stay in this area long term and want there to be enough secondary school places for the children 2016 onwards. There will be a desperate need for more secondary school places by then, but if a primary goes ahead on the same site there will be precious little outside space for the secondary. There is a huge, locally-backed campaign for a secondary on that site but no community campaign for a primary in that location. The petition is getting near 500 signatures which is amazing, but thousands of people with children look at this forum and it would be great if more could sign! If you read it, it explains the issues so you can make up your mind. There is also a really helpful post today in the general issues bit of this forum now by Southwark education cabinet member Victoria Mills, which sets out some of the facts: http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,1407450,page=7 Thanks for reading.
  18. I have most of all the new things that you need with a birth pool that you are welcome to eg a cover and liner I think)if you need any other bits, never taken out of the box (except the hose which is now in the garden!) just in case you want any of those.
  19. We went when my son was just two and we had a really wonderful time. It is such an amazing place and ridiculously child friendly due to people being so kind and friendly. We rented a flat in the centre of town on the owners direct website I think, I can dig out details if you like. It was so perfect for a toddler because of the trams, boats etc and so much to see there I'd love to go back sometime. And the best cakes ever!
  20. I've just started my own business and am working from this shared workspace near Loughborough Junction. It is a really lovely place to work and quite cheap. http://www.neardesk.com/locations/details/108 To be honest I would like to keep it to myself, but it is so empty that I am a bit worried they find some other use for it, so am putting it on here in case it meets anyone else's requirements. Perhaps it is the Loughborough Junction location that is putting people off, but it's a lovely space and really quick to get here from east dulwich by bike.
  21. Went to myatts field today and there was a sign up saying it was broken but actually it did come on every 20 minutes to the sound of massive cheering and frenzied jumping in the water from all the children...the sign said it would be fully working tomorrow but I am only reporting what the sign said, wouldnt vouch for it!
  22. Well done, hope you get one, it was absolutely fantastic.
