Does anyone know if schools are allowed to keep children back (from moving up to year 2) against their parents' wishes? I have heard that children attending a Southwark school, let's call it Wallydale, have been held back in year 1 because they scored less than 34 in the phonics tests. Are they allowed to enforce this? Is this to massage the SATs statistics in year 2?

2nd Harris East Dulwich Primary School

Does the area really need another school from the Harris chain? They seem to be expanding aggressivley, despite most parents not wanting them. Parents and Camden Juniors Carshalton and at Roke in Croydon have not been happy with the conversion of their schools as seen in this story: Harris Chain Fails to Win Over Parents "Girls were having their pinafores unzipped to check they had a logoed Harris top underneath." What nice people they have there at those Harris schools! It is clear that the Secretary of State for Education favours the Tory Party donor Lord Harris. It also appears that he has lesser politicians doing his bidding as well. Very sad. -

Harris Academy Peckham Park - places available. Harris Free School Peckham - places available. This says to me that these schools are unpopular in their local area. If the plebs of Peckham dont want their kids at an 'Arris primary school, it's a pretty safe bet that the "mummy groups" of East Dulwich wouldn't be rushing to enrol the darling sons & daughters at one. Perhaps it would make more sense to look at over-subscribed schools and find out why these are popular. Heber, Goodrich, Fairlwan, Horniman, Ivydale seem to be the names coming up. I havent heard anyone say, "I want my child to go to a Harris school." -

I'd be interested to know whether this was a local authority or academy school. -

I have sympathy with this situation. Is there a need for more schools? Possibly. Do parents want more Harris schools? As Renata Hamvas posted on April 18 that 3 Harris primaries still had places, it would appear not. This could be interpreted as east Dulwich parents being disproportionately unrealistic about which schools they are likely to get. -
