  2. Hi N, If you are interested to learn how to engrave for yourself, we have a weekend course coming up that will introduce you to these skills... It will take some practice before you would be skilled enough to engrave your precious knives, but you might find it satisfying enough to want to perfect the technique and have the confidence to go for it. We have a limited number of free places available for local people... We have a free weekend opportunity for you to come and explore the art of hand engraving, on 24/25 March, thanks to the generous support of Southwark Adult Learning services. Do you like to draw? are you interested in calligraphy? Join us for a 2 day jewellery course to learn the ancient art of decorative hand engraving on metal. It's a dying art, and if you have an aptitude for it there's a great opportunity for a rewarding and lucrative career in it too! We will teach you how to sharpen and prepare your tools, and how to cut lines and texture the surface of metal using these tools. Working on copper for the course, you will then build confidence to be able to hand engrave on more precious metals in your own time. The ancient Korean technique of keum boo is both beautiful and cost effective, and over the 2-day workshop we will also highlight additional techniques that can be applied to further enhance the contrast of colour and texture to produce highly individual pieces of jewellery. The course fee covers the cost of all materials for an initial project. Additional materials will be available for purchase if you wish to work on a larger or second piece of jewellery. More advanced students may wish to bring along exsting work that they would like to embellish.You may also bring your own precious materials to work with. Free 2 day jewellery course in Fabric and Metal Jewellery Weekend 8/9 July , 10am - 5pm daily If you live in Southwark this course is FREE* If you are out of borough the course is ?225 for the weekend Suitable for all levels from beginner to advanced If you love the softness of silk, delicacy of lace, intensity of leather or the natural look of cotton, and want to incorporate these qualities into your designs to create fabric and metal jewellery, this course is for you! Combining textiles with metal elements can give permanence to the etherial qualities of fabric, and we will explore a number of ways to draw contrasting elements together using a variety of joining methods including cold connections like riveting, screw threading and weaving. Exploring the characteristics of materials (resistance, colourfastness, water resistance, stretch, thickness, composition, stiffness), this knowledge will assist you to design unique metal structures ? and appropriate connection methods- to accommodate the fabric. This course gives a great opportunity to explore how to work with different materials in your jewellery making practice, whether you are beginner or advanced. Free 2 day jewellery course in Casting Techniques for Jewellery Perfect for parents with kids at school - Timings are geared to fit in to the school run If you live in Southwark this course is FREE* If you are out of borough the fee is ?190. This 2 day course is suitable for complete beginners and for those with some experience of making. We introduce a range of home-studio casting techniques for creating jewellery and other small accessories. You will have the opportunity to experiment with cuttlefish, delft sand and plywood mould making. Pewter, a low-melt metal, will be used for casting into the moulds, and we will also look at ways to incorporate other materials into the cast. You can also include materials like glass, wood, plastic or stone in your cast. We will also discuss the wider applications of studio casting for developing multiple casts using the lost wax process. If you wish, once you have successfully made a cast in pewter you can also use silver. Ask for more advice if you would like to try to make your final piece in silver. It is anticipated that you will produce a range of progressive test pieces that could form the basis of a charm necklace or bracelet. Techniques include: Cuttlefish casting, delft sand casting, acrylic / ply method of casting, silicon mould making working with resistant materials to make prototypes for mould making. Free 2 day jewellery course in etching techniques for jewellery, weekend 20/21 May On this fun weekend course you will experiment with a variety of ways to apply texture and pattern to copper or silver using a range of etching techniques. You will produce a range of tests pieces which you will then make into wearable items such as pendants, earrings or a bangle. Methods to explore include acid etching / electro-etching/ photo etching. This is a weekend course, running Saturday 20 May and Sunday 21 May, 10-5pm. You will need to attend both days to complete the pendant, which is yours to keep. The course is free, and you will be provided with copper to explore and experiment with designs and ideas. If you wish to make a final piece in silver we can provide this at cost.   14. Free 2 day jewellery course to design and make a pendant or charm in sterling silver, with a semi-precious stone. On this fun weekend course you will learn how to cut, shape and texture silver; choose a semi precious stone and make a setting to add it to your pendant. Possible stone include moonstone, agate, amethyst, lapis, topaz, peridot, citrine, garnet etc This is a weekend course, running Saturday 22 April and Sunday 23 April, 10-5pm. You will need to attend both days to complete the pendant, which is yours to keep. The course is free, however as you are using precious metals, if you enjoy the course and you are happy with your pendant at the end of the weekend, we ask that you make a donation towards the silver and the stone you will use on the course.
