  2. The Bigger Picture film club will be showing ? ?Belle? (2013) at 8pm on Thursday, 16 July 2015, Upstairs at East Dulwich Tavern. ?Belle? is inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), the illegitimate mixed-race daughter of Admiral Sir John Lindsay (Matthew Goode). Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle, Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson), Belle's lineage affords her certain privileges, yet her status bars her from the traditions of noble social standing. While her cousin Elizabeth (Sarah Gadon) chases suitors for marriage, Belle is left on the sidelines, wondering if she will ever find love. After meeting an idealistic young vicar's son bent on changing society, she helps him shape Lord Mansfield's role as Lord Chief Justice to end slavery in England. Directed by Amma Asante 104 minutes. 4. The Bigger Picture film club will be showing ? ?A Most Wanted Man? (2014) at 8pm on Thursday, 18 June 2015, Upstairs at East Dulwich Tavern. A Most Wanted Man takes place in present day Hamburg, Germany, where a mysterious, tortured and near-dead half-Chechen, half-Russian man on the run arrives in the city?s Islamic community desperate for help and looking to recover his late Russian father?s ill-gotten fortune. Nothing about this young man seems to add up; is he a victim or a thief or, worse still, an extremist intent on destruction? Drawn into this web of intrigue is a private British banker and a young female lawyer determined to defend the defenceless. All the while, they are being watched by the brilliant, roguish chief of a covert German spy unit (Hoffman), who fights to put the pieces together as the clock ticks. Thrilling. Directed by Anton Corbijn with Philip Seymour Hoffman, Willem Dafoe and Robin Wright 122 minutes. Cert 15. All tickets ?7 Bar opens from 7pm. Film at 8pm. 5. The Bigger Picture film club will be showing ? ?Late Spring? (1949) at 8pm on Thursday, 21 May 2015, Upstairs at East Dulwich Tavern. Veteran Japanese writer/director Yasujiro Ozu's second postwar production was Late Spring or Banshun. Chisu Ryu plays a realistic middle-class widower with a marriageable daughter. Not wishing to see the girl resign herself to spinsterhood, Ryu pretends that he himself is about to be married. The game plan is to convince the daughter that there will be no room for her at home, thus forcing her to seek comfort and joy elsewhere. What makes this homey little domestic episode work is the rapport between Chisu Ryu and Setsuko Hara, who plays the daughter. Late Spring is no facile Hollywood farce; we like these people, believe in them, and wish them the best. Directed by Yasujiro Ozu 108 minutes. Cert U. All tickets ?7. Bar opens from 7pm. Film at 8pm. 6. The Bigger Picture film club will be showing ? ?Boyhood? (2014) at 8pm on Thursday, 16 April 2015, Upstairs at East Dulwich Tavern. Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, Richard Linklater's ?Boyhood? is a story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason (a breakthrough performance by Ellar Coltrane), who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Mason's parents, and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha, ?Boyhood? charts the rocky terrain of childhood as no other film has before. Snapshots of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations and all the moments in between become transcendent, set to a soundtrack spanning the years from Coldplay's Yellow to Arcade Fire's Deep Blue. Directed by Richard Linklater 165 minutes. Cert 15. All tickets ?7. Bar opens from 7pm. Film at 8pm. 7. The Bigger Picture film club will be showing ? ?Ida? (2013) at 8pm on Thursday, 12 March 2015, Upstairs at East Dulwich Tavern. This film is a moving and intimate drama about a young novice nun in 1960s Poland who, on the verge of taking her vows, discovers a dark family secret which she explores. 18-year old Anna (stunning newcomer Agata Trzebuchowska), a sheltered orphan raised in a convent, is told by the Mother Superior to visit her Aunt Wanda (Agata Kulesza), a worldly and cynical Communist Party insider. Her aunt shocks her with the declaration that her real name is Ida and that her Jewish parents were murdered during the Nazi occupation, and Ida then traces her family story. The intersection of the personal story and momentous historic events makes this a powerful and affecting film. Directed by Pawel Pawlikowski 82 minutes. Cert 12A. All tickets ?7 Bar opens from 7pm. 10. The Bigger Picture film club will be showing ? ?Locke? (2013) at 8pm on Thursday, 15 January 2015, Upstairs at East Dulwich Tavern. Tom Hardy is brilliant in Locke as he manages to turn the logistics of pouring concrete (his job) into a nail biting thriller. During a two hour car journey to the premature birth of a love child, Ivan Locke phones all the important people in his life and everything changes. Almost the entire film takes place within a BMW X5, which was driven down the M1 motorway on a flatbed truck. Shooting took place in real time and the filmmakers only took breaks to change the cameras' memory cards. Directed and written by Steven Knight 85 mins. Cert 15. All tickets ?7 Bar opens from 7pm.
