  1. Fewer food miles does not necessarily mean more sustainable food. See for instance http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2013/may/26/worrying-about-food-miles-missing-point
  2. I generally agree with the article about not foraging important woodland species, but not sure about this comparison: "It?s no more acceptable than grabbing a duck from your local park and turning it into confit de canard." I'm not sure there's anything wrong with (humanely) catching and eating a wild mallard, a species which is not remotely endangered. It's not illegal as far as I know. The more exotic types of duck that could be seen to "belong" to a park are definitely off the menu, though.
  3. btw computedshorty which school are you referring to? The closest now is Alleyn's I think - was it the same back then?
  4. computedshorty Wrote: > No short cut Allyways but you can park outside > your house. If only I had a car! Living here I have many blessings to count, but we all have our gripes and the lack of a shortcut to the west is mine.
  5. I dearly wish there were a passage between Melbourne Grove/Playfield Crescent and Glengarry/Thorncombe/Hillsboro Roads. I live on Bassano St and heading west on foot is a right pain, you either have to go all the way up Melbourne Grove to E Dulwich Grove or down to Townley Rd and around the front of the school.

    Vegetarians

Nothing complicated about the concept. But even with only those two minority factions to satisfy, it is hard to come up with a menu that has something to please everyone and doesn't stretch the kitchen beyond its limits or result in a lot of surplus food that may end up going to waste. That's before you start worrying about nut allergy sufferers, pregnant mums, people who are just plain fussy, etc, etc...
  7. Quite right jim_the_chin. Hardly anything ends up in our green bin these days. Mind you, I can't be certain whether all the stuff we put out for "recycling" actually gets recycled - but maybe I'm just cynical.

  9. Yeah I thought that might make it too easy! All yours stacey
  10. no. Time for a clue methinks. Utterly incapacitated, but made it big in sausages - or just pork pies?
  11. No, James Caan has never played this character. Nice idea though El Pibe
  12. 'fraid not
  13. no
  14. both wrong
  15. nope
  16. no to both questions I'm afraid MisterMelkor
  17. Like a wheel, he goes for a spin, and gets in a twist
  18. Darth Vader / Anakin Skywalker?
  19. The train service from Peckham Rye/Denmark Hill to Clapham High Street predates the Overground Extension.
  20. Nice idea rahrahrah. One of the overall goals of the London Bridge redevelopment is to allow more through trains to Charing Cross, but I don't know whether services from ED will be extended in this way...the pessimist in me expects that we will be overlooked in favour of services from Kent and the New Cross line, as usual. Still, as you say this might be the moment to get some campaigning in!
  21. @ spc: "Number of times a fire appliance mobilised within Borough of Southwark in 2011/12=7071, 26% higher than the London borough average of 5602. Number of fires within the London Borough of Southwark in 2011/12=1215. 48% higher than the London borough average of 819. Number of dwelling fires within Borough of Southwark 2011/12=319,56% higher than the London borough average of 204." OK, those statistics suggest that demand for fire services in Southwark are higher than average. Of course, you should bear in mind that the population of Southwark is 289,000, 16% higher than the London borough average of 249,000 (source:ONS). Moreover, the same source as your figures reveals that the average first pump attendance time in Southwark is 283 seconds, 21% faster than the London borough average of 360 seconds. The average second pump attendance time in Southwark is 345 seconds, 28% faster than the London borough average of 480 seconds. Just because demand is higher, does not mean that the service is not coping well.
  22. "why else would one clear the land, lie about it and then run from the fire brigade?" It's feasible that someone clearing the land and burning vegetation for legitimate reasons could be panicked into scarpering and then denying responsibility if the fire brigade turn up. Nobody wants to get in trouble with the authorities. But I agree, the OP did not mention race and it's a bit of a stretch to assume that's what the allusion to "travellers" was based on.
  23. Quite. You'd think they could make a plane where you just turn the engines off at altitude and glide gracefully down to land.
  24. The Fentiman Arms (on Fentiman Road) is a pub that does good food.
