Aston just quoted me ?850 to dig up three holes measuring 70cm x 70cm x 100cm deep in concreted ground. Then he changed it to ?700 to dig two holes. I was gobsmacked, for unskilled labour really? For comparison I was quoted ?250 elsewhere. Thanks but that's a hard pass for me.
  2. Did you find anyone in the end? Looking for someone to do a deep clean as well: dishwasher, microwave, oven, bathrooms, floors etc.
  3. Went there last night and won't be going back there again. Ordered a rack of lamb for two people and the meat came out red raw. Sent it back to get it cooked more and they just returned the plates cold and did nothing about our request. It wasn't even busy. ?115 bill for that, a small sea trout and a bottle of wine. Never again ...
  4. Affirmative Pugwash ... EJ and WCD advised the same to me. In fact, been getting a mixed bag of opinions on the question of Sisal or in fact any natural fibre on stairs so I did some research (spoke to various flooring specialists, feedback from people who actually have them on their stairs and advice from the Independent Flooring Guild). For anyone interested, I found the following: ? Seagrass not suitable - gets polished and slippery with wear and tear. ? Jute not suitable - for light domestic use only, will wear thin quickly. ? Coir is suitable - but is very rough underfoot, ideal door matting material. ? Sisal is suitable - hardest wearing of the plant fibres, will not polish with wear like Seagrass and facilitates friction for grip due to its coarse characteristics. Some people say that it may be slippery with leather under soles. Conclusion in summary: It's a hit and miss! Depends entirely on your lifestyle, how many pets or children you have crawling around, etc. Some people have it in pieces after 2 years and others have it in fab condition after 25 years. I note that the cons are that they stain easily, are affected by humidity and expand and contract with water. The major consensus is that one needs a pro fitter to install. This is not a DIY job. I would really like a flat weave that will last the distance on our staircase - hard to find in something like wool and polypropelene - so i guess I am going to go for the Sisal and hope for the best. Sorry for the long essay! It's been a long confusing weave of carpet tales and I was just voicing out my jumble of thoughts. Hope this helps someone anyway :)
  5. Thanks all! Carpet hunting today for our staircase runner. Went round to EJ Carpets and Warehouse Carpet Direct. The former was considerably expensive compared to the latter. Both were really helpful and friendly to boot. Am veering towards natural fibres like Sisal, Jute and Coir though but neither of them do those. Off I headed to Blackheath Flooring Studio and they quoted me roughly the same - supply and fit - as the cheapest carpet in EJ Carpets ?450 to ?500. Might as well bite the bullet. Blackheath Flooring Studio are coming round to measure up next week. Let you know how it goes ...
  6. Have you got a number for the shop behind forest hill station? Or a name? We're looking for a runner on our staircase as well and they're all quite pricey so far!
  7. We have some Sylko Perle No.8 Embroidery threads. Doing a clear out so they're going at ?1 each. Don't know if I'm breaking forum rules so PM me if you're interested :) BeeFashionSewing.com 125-127 Norwood High Street, London SE27 9JF
