  1. Hi I have sent out a few messages but not had a response yet, so hoping some of you good folk may be able to help. My flat has had some fairly severe water penetration following heavy rain, and it appears that this may have come through the wall due to some damaged brickwork. I need someone who is able to repair the brickwork (on the second floor) and address any apparent issues. I need this fairly urgently, but as I am in a different timezone, arranging this is difficult. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
  2. Hi The flat below me has reported water coming through their ceiling from my flat but the source can't be found. Unfortunately, I am not in the country, therefore unable to investigate myself so am looking for recommendations for a reliable plumber who can help me out. Many thanks John
  3. I've had 2 "missed you" cards in the last couple of weeks. I was definitely in and even checked the bell was working. No chance they even tried. Even more annoying, I went to Peckham and they wouldn't let me have the parcel addressed to my wife as I only had a photo of her ID and not the real thing.
  4. Cella, I'm not quite sure where laziness enters into things. If someone has Social Anxiety Disorder and didn't ask a question, do you consider that lazy? As per your repeated comment about trolling, I think you may need to look up the definition and consider your own raisin d'etre here. You seem to be lacking somewhat in self awareness. I also clearly stated my praise for Ahmed the barber and would recommend him quite happily so how a simple question could be considered to have malicious intent baffles me. I should also point out that if that were indeed my intent, your own responses, which in turn have repeatedly kept this thread alive, have only served to boost the visibility of the original post.I could question your own motive in this regard.
  5. Cella, is this a cry for help? You seem desperate to get a reaction from someone. If you need any support or someone to talk to, please just ask. There are lots of kind and open-hearted people in East Dulwich who I'm sure would be happy to offer a non-judgemental, friendly ear.
  6. Thanks for the helpful reply Urbanfox. Good to know. Urbanfox Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Ahmed is still around. 7. Why comment if you have nothing helpful add? It was a fairly straightforward question. The fact I didnt ask the guy cutting my hair at the time is moot unless you have a time machine.
  8. I've been getting my hair cut at GK barbers for the last 5 years or so after ruling out others in the area for various reasons. The owner Ahmed is always friendly, does a decent job and doesn't overcharge. The last couple of times I've been however, he has not been there. The cut I've had hasn't been to the same standard and the guy cut my neck with a razor blade today without even acknowledging it. The price has also gone up a couple of quid so I wondered if Ahmed is still running the place. Anyone know?
  9. Hi I have a leaking Worcester boiler which needs attention. I've opened it up and the flow unit has a pinhole in it so have ordered the part but don't have time to fit it. If you want to get in touch with a quote or recommendation, that would be appreciated. I did have someone's details but can't seem to find them. I'd prefer not to be charged a ridiculous amount for an hour's work bit appreciate people need to make a living. Would like it sorted in the next couple of days if possible. Many thanks
  10. Also looking for someone can anyone offer me some quotes for a very thorough clean including 3 carpeted rooms and oven etc? Thanks
  11. Thanks for the messages everyone. I'll be in touch.
  12. Hi I don't have any work that is required at the moment, but wondered if anyone could recommend a local handyman who might be available, sometimes at short notice at short notice. It may involve some basic plumbing/electrics. Thanks John
  13. Hi Linda I know this message was a while ago, but did you find someone? I'm now in the same situation as temporarily moving abroad and won't be able to manage it myself. Thanks John
  14. Hi I'm an Outstanding graded primary school teacher available for private tuition of pupils over the summer months. I'm a KS2 specialist (Y3-6), currently teaching year 6 but with experience across all primary school ages. I am maths lead at my current school but have strengths across all subjects. I can also help if your child is about to make the transition into secondary but would like to make sure they are ready. I can tutor in your own home, at my own flat or in the library. I'm male with enhanced DBS check and can provide references. Please get in touch if you would like more information. Thanks John
  15. Did I say anything about falling standards? My point was referring to the assessment upheaval and the introduction of a new curriculum - can you tell me what you know about the entirely new set of tests you speak of and whether you think the new curriculum gives children a balanced education? Can you tell me if you think schools chasing thresholds in reading, writing and maths gives a child a balanced education? Can you tell me whether you think that increasing class sizes paired with reduced teaching support and unqualified teachers taking the place of those with years of professional experience is a good thing? Out of interest, could you tell where from what viewpoint you are speaking and how you have come to be such an authority on what teachers think and how the education system is, in actual fact, thriving now more than ever? Just to clarify what you quoted above, with regards to teacher's pay progression, this is not automatic as quoted above, it is based on "performance". Granted, one of the reasons for calling for the strike was terms and conditions of teachers; that isn't necessarily the reason why so many teachers chose to follow the strike. With regards to the accountability issue, could you show me where in the NUT's statement for strike there was any mention of OFSTED?
  16. DaveR, you might want to read something more uo to date, like this year's SATs results. You think that there isn't a problem when only 53% of 11 year olds met the "expected standard" in reading, writing and maths? It amazes me that, despite the political turmoil recently with the lies and misinformation given out by the Leave campaign prior to the referendum that people continue to only believe what a person with a vested interest tells you. Have you ever been in a school and spoken to a teacher? I spoke to lots of people during the match yesterday, and not a single person was there because of pay.
  17. Sorry to hear that dippybird, I hope you were well insured? As is happens, I had a call from the police 2 days ago, saying they have recovered mine. Apparently they found it in Bexleyheath, fully intact. As the insurance has already paid out and I'm no longer insured, I don't know where I stand with it, or what I should do tbh. I'm mainly interested to find out if they caught whoever took it.
  18. I too am a teacher, striking on Tuesday, and very grateful for the support of most of you on this thread. Unfortunately, as not every teacher in my school is striking (due to being in different unions and fear of reprisal mainly), my school is staying open, with the exception of the classes whose teachers will be on strike. As such, some (by no means all) parents are blaming me personally for being selfish, and causing them to take a day off work. I cannot add much to what has already been said above, but will add this. I am not striking for pay. I am striking against proposals and a changing landscape which affect the education of other people's children. Class sizes are increasing and funding is being cut, with no clear plan. Good teachers are leaving in their droves, due to workload and a system which fails to support them, instead holding them accountable for problems that were forced upon them. I am sacrificing a day's pay for the sake of other people's children; it would be nice if the parents of those children would care as much about their children's education and not begrudge having to make other arrangements for one day. Parents and teachers need to unite on this issue, not be forced into a situation that causes conflict. I may not agree with the timing of the strike, but I will still stand up for the reasons behind it. I would just like to add that before teaching I spent 10 years in another career. I took a pay cut of over 50% and work a damn sight harder now than I have ever done. I have not taken a single sick day, work over 12 hours a day and through holidays and weekends but I do not begrudge any of this because I feel I am doing something important. Whether or not this is recognised by the general population isn't important. What is important is that the rights of a child to education are upheld and, in a society that is prosperous by global standards, that this education is provided to as high of a level as can be afforded. If every one of us - teachers along with the rest of us - stood up for that, then I feel that we might get somewhere.
  19. James, I think that would be great. There's is definitely demand in the area. I have used one on a residential street in Putney which I believe is Wandsworth borough. I grabbed a picture off Google Streetview and attached here. ------------------------------------------------------- > I have a query with council officers why we can;t > deploy ground anchors in the road. 20. Sadly, I sold my bike today and now have no wheels for the first time in 4 years. Insurance premium was just too high after the old one being nicked. Shame the scallywags have won - I hope others are more fortunate. At least I may be able to sleep at night now (no doubt dreaming of the days I could jump on my bike at weekends and get out of London!).
  21. Ive only just seen it, but James Barber replied to my post asking what was being done: mes Barber Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Hi mrsilencio, > The offer of free ground motorbike anchors is > still in place for all East Dulwich ward residents > - any resident can email with their details so we > can organise this. > We also have free motorbike property marking kits > - again any resident can email me their contact > details and we can get this organised. > > I will ask our Safer Neighbourhood Panel Ward > Panel to make motorbike crime number one priority. > The Police can get a list of all registered > motorbikes in the ward and proactively visit > offering our free anchors and property marking > kits. I will also contact the borough commander > asking what other measures he plans to solve this > problem. Hope that's of some help to someone. O
  22. Thanks for your reply on this James, that sounds good. 23. I have considered the same thing with regards to petitioning for secure motorcycle parking. Many of us in the area don't have to option for putting in a secure ground anchor. That said, after my bike being stolen, my insurance renewal has just come in and I'm having to admit defeat. Previously paid ?250, and now they want ?2500. Feel like the insurance company are trying to rob me a second time. I would have been better off if I hadn't made a claim, so now I'm going to have to sell my bike as can't afford the insurance. So think about your insurance premiums if you are considering making a claim! Seems we now live in a high risk area.
  24. So let me get this right, Luker2100 and KatieHolland85 both had bikes stolen on Sunday night? A friend of someone I know also had one stolen in Forest Hill last night too. This is getting crazy. Luker2100, what kind of security did you have?
