'Who needs a review in the Guardian when children acknowledge you' ... Dave Walker MBE picked out this great line from Stephen's podcast.
-
Stephen is a much published writer of Black British History. He is a delightful man and a longstanding member of the Southwark IAG - a group that links up with local police as 'critical friend'. His is a story of a family who embraced Esther, a young Black woman orphaned during World War II. Decades later their boy became a prolific author of Black British History. No ordinary story. No university education. He also has views on whether the Met can survive its current crises.

PECKHAM PODCAST in Black History Month with Stephen Bourne
Chris Haydon posted a topic in The Lounge
Black History Month with PECKHAM PODCAST presents Stephen Bourne, local to Peckham and Camberwell, who is a much published author of books on Black British History. Catch his fascinating conversation when the podcast goes live at 4pm on Monday 14 October. He also has something to say about the Met Police. Meanwhile there's always Dave, Fernando, Althea, George and Ben on the PECKHAM PODCAST channel already: www.youtube.com/@PECKHAMPODCAST-r2f -

Here's a comment I received this morning: "Ben shows us that opening up our own vulnerabilities, allows us to have the empathy, compassion and purpose to help others on their journey to problem solving to hopefully make choices for the greater good. We need lots of Ben's in this world." Ben's conversation covers his new enterprise called Cards Of Life, which is a coaching programme; he talks about how developing coaching skills empowered him along the way; Phone Savvy was a brilliant telecoms enterprise he developed while inside, which within three months had established itself in prisons across the country then went international; he spoke about SVI (Shame/Violence Intervention), a respected therapeutic approach to working with violent offenders which was brought to a halt after ten years of beneficial practice in HMP Wandsworth ... and more. Ben is full of insights and challenging aphorisms, e.g. "Pain is just weakness leaving the body." Ben and I talked for just over the hour. An hour well spent. If you give it a go, please leave a comment, like, subscribe etc. It all helps to promote these positive stories which ideally would end up in front of young people too. PECKHAM PODCAST Extra 8 minute video, a snapshot of Southport from a trip I took up there yesterday answering a need I felt just to be there and 'know' the town. What would it be like? Life in Peckham and inner London teaches us many things but the way of life in a Northern seaside town - the sea has now retreated I learnt, beyond the dunes, and so can't be seen. https://youtu.be/E7GbNf3-hz8

You can catch the latest edition of PECKHAM PODCAST, with George Osei-Oppong Junior. A talented businessman, financier, writer and father ... With guys like this around the future has hope! https://youtu.be/MucnqiScNSM

Former Mayor of Southwark and proud Jamaican, Althea Smith, is guest on PECKHAM PODCAST which publishes at midday today, Jamaica Day, 6th August. She knows most people in Southwark 😊 but if you don't, try it. She is fun, industrious, indefatigable and in fact never stops ... and achieves so much for others. Not that everybody likes her talking to the Police. This is the link to her podcast: https://youtu.be/baGxJ8-4P9k

Althea on PECKHAM PODCAST is published on Tuesday, Jamaica Day, 6th August. I think she knows most people in Southwark but if you don't, try it. She is fun and achieves so much for others.

https://youtu.be/4jghonn7gxQ PECKHAM PODCAST has a special guest coming next week, on Jamaica Day as it happens ... a Bravery Award, Freedom of the City of London, former Mayor, lover of cricket ... Althea Smith is also a stalwart of community, who successfully crossed into politics and retained all her links into the communities around her. The stepping stones of her CV speak for themselves. She joins PECKHAM PODCAST for an edition published at midday on Jamaica Day next week, 6th August.

The second edition of PECKHAM PODCAST is now online. It features Fernando Carrillo, born in a Miami prison of drug addicted parents, became an addict himself, went to prison ... and was ordained in St Paul's Cathedral! The full podcast: London's most remarkable vicar is also deeply into CrossFit! You couldn't write the script. And he wants to get in front of young people. If you do watch it, please leave a comment. Here's Fernando. He and his incredible life story are available from midday on Wednesday 24 July.
-
Born in a Miami prison, ordained in London at St Paul's Cathedral. Your parents are drug addicts and criminals, you become addicted and then even more heavily involved, prison follows ... yet Fernando Carrillo, who gives a truly open account of his life journey to Christ Church Peckham, is now Priest-in-Charge over there on the Old Kent Road. Oh, and he does Cross Fit. And is European Champion. You may just be inspired. This looks like some form of Redemption in action. Whatever you believe or don't, something's going on. Publication date: Wednesday 24th July at midday on the PECKHAM PODCAST YouTube Channel. Maybe check it out, here's a trailer:

This new series of long-form conversations with local Southwark people should interest many of us. Big Ideas, Local Traction is the keynote. Launching mid July.. First up will be Dave Walker MBE, a mediator born and bred in Southwark who also trains young people in schools to mediate with their peers who have a beef with one another. So that's a win-win as the young person trained up feels great about life and themselves and actively contributes to better relations in the school community.
