  1. Just to put the record straight here. SA is one of the best sources of top quality good value wine in the world right now. White wine in particular - Amazing old vine Chenin and Semillon from Swartland and Franschhoek, and super talented winemakers. So this is just silly. There are good winemakers and there are less good winemakers and, amazingly, they come from lots of different countries. Old world vs new world as a debate (certainly on quality lines) is a bit old fashioned.
  2. I have been reading this thread and could not decide whether to post or not. I don?t think this will change anyone?s mind; people are very entrenched. We have an SUV. We don?t spend all our time in London, and when we are not in London, having the SUV is incredibly useful. We can?t afford a second car, and I am not convinced having a second car just for London would be the right answer anyway. This, however, is not the point of the post. A few weeks ago, there was an accident at home and one of my children, who has just started primary school, was badly burned. I drove to A&E immediately, as the wait for an ambulance was over an hour. That I got my child to A&E within half an hour has meant that they have not needed surgery or a skin graft. Had someone deflated my tyres, I would not have got to A&E quickly enough and my child?s life would now look very different. A leaflet would not have helped me. Nor would the knowledge that they might have been acting for the right reasons. We absolutely need to address the way we treat our planet, more urgently than we are doing now. If we don?t, my child?s life will soon look very different for different reasons. Interfering with the property of others is wrong in principle, and may have consequences that one does not foresee. I cannot think that it is the right thing to do.
  3. I have to disagree with SpringTime, although I concede that each person?s experience is different. We sold with Winkworth and they were great. Pricing was realistic and achieved. When our purchase (also in ED) became tricky, they were very helpful (more than would have been expected just to secure commission). If we were to sell again, we would use them.
  4. David Coombs at William Bailey Solicitors is very good.
  5. This could be very good. Years ago, Robin had a restaurant on Clapham Park Road (not the little fish and chips place on Balham Hill) and it was great. I wouldn't be sad if we had a Moxons fish and chips on LL, but the original Moxons was a terrific restaurant.
  6. Two kids (looked to be 15/16) on an old Vespa style scooter nearly had a pop at me by the Goose Green roundabout one night last week. I had on headphones and my phone in my hand. I crossed from Just Williams to the EDT and they nearly hit me on the crossing, and had a very good look at me. They went around the roundabout and back down through the no entry sign an and did a u-turn by by the EDT bins. All the time watching me. During his time I had put my phone away, put my headphones in my bag, fastened the bag and taken it off my back, and kept eye contact with them. For some reason they didn't come after me, but I think I had a close escape. It's not an unusual story it seems, but it doesn't stop me being affronted that people think it's ok to do this sort of thing. What surprised and upset me the most, I think, was that this was not at midnight but at about 6.30pm, in front of a packed EDT terrace. So very brazen. Also that my instinct was to go after them, but that I didn't because I then worried that I might be stabbed, by a 15 year old, 500 yards from my front door, which would be an ideal outcome for my wife and children. That is not an acceptable way for anyone to feel. I agree with other posters that this is happening more frequently, especially around Goose Green, and I would very much like to hear if there is a planned approach from Police and council to counter what seems to be a growing problem. I know there are no magic wand solutions here, but this is getting out of hand.
  7. I asked Royal Mail about this, and whether or not one should believe it, the response was unequivocal: Dear Mr Seychelles Thank you for your patience whilst we have carried out our investigations. I was sorry to learn of the worry caused as you have been informed that the East Dulwich Delivery Office was due to close. Upon receiving your email I have contacted the Delivery Sector Manager of the East Dulwich area so further inquiries could be made. I have been assured that any information you have learned which indicates the office is due to close is incorrect. Once again I am sorry for any confusion caused and I hope the information provided helps in resolving your enquiry. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate in contacting us again, quoting your reference XXXXXXXXXX. Regards XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Customer Service Advisor
  8. We would be very pleased to see a good Japanese restaurant on LL.
  9. There are people (whether cyclists, pedestrians, or motorists) that do not comply with the laws that apply to them. These people are annoying to everyone else and are sometimes dangerous. Cyclists, pedestrians and motorists are, as a group, no more careless, malign or thoughtless than each other. Generalisations are a bit pointless.
  10. Yes, and I think it is harder to do in the traditional way. This piece of pork was cooked without a water bath and was done well. I was saying that there are good skills in the kitchen.

We ate on Saturday evening and will go back. The pork was perfectly cooked, pink and very moist (no water bath used here) and tasted the right amount of pig. Langoustines were done just enough, and were sweet. The homemade soft cheese with dill and onions, which came unordered, was delicious; sweet and creamy and, unsurprisingly, like very good ricotta. Other dishes were as good. I think this is very good, precise, and ambitious cooking, and not expensive. The wine list is impressive, at all levels. We drank Muscadet from the tank and then Testalonga Chenin from SA. Mark-ups are much less punchy than they could be. Staff were all very friendly and the feel is good. The only downside was that the atmosphere in the tank room is a bit flat at the moment, but it is early days. Look forward to toast getting better and better. Why wouldn't you like a restaurant like this in your neighbourhood?
