  1. You can find other people's routes on Runkeeper, eg, this one, http://runkeeper.com/user/Gulfstream/route/503696 Personally, when training for a half mara I found the addition of some hills really useful in terms of getting some more intensity in. So running from East Dulwich > Dulwich Park > College Road to the top of the hill at Crystal Palace. Then adding in a couple of laps around the park there, down to Sydenham, up Kirkdale then across Dartmouth Road to Forest Hill, then over to Honor Oak and round the cemeteries or round Peckham Rye Park. Found that a nice way of getting the miles in with lots of it away from traffic with few stops at junctions etc required. What has annoyed me with other routes is the stopping/starting effect, so found this great for near continuous running. Plus, if you've been training with hills involved, it makes the relative flat of the course you actually run seem a lot easier so you can up the pace, giving you a nice psychological boost!
  2. Most bike shops have them, so Balfe Bikes or Evans should have one on E Dulwich Road/Goose Green should be able to help.
  3. They've moved some of the benches inside now. Quite a pleasant vibe sitting round inside next to fermenting beer, drinking beer. Agreed, you wouldn't want to spend all evening in there, but it's nice enough for a drink or two of something new I reckon.
  4. Anyone been to the Brick Brewery in Peckham yet? Open on Friday and nights and Saturday from lunchtime. They're own bottled beers, and usually a decent selection of house and guest beers on tap. Had a wonderful porter on last Friday. Right under Peckham Rye station, worth a visit. It's a small local brewer, not sure if this qualifies under the catch-all title of 'craft' though.
  5. St Austell brewery, Proper Job is a favourite of mine. Again, more votes for the Brixton and Kernal beers. As Jeremy says above the main shop on Bellenden Road has considerably upped their game and you'll find a fair few of the Bossman favourites there, but a substantial chunk cheaper. But Bosssman is like an aladdins cave of beer. Fantastic place.
  6. I caught them outside our house recently, well, my 8 year old reported there was someone in the front garden. I confronted them, they carried on going through the bins for a couple of minutes saying they couldn't speak English and then sauntered off nextdoor where they did the same thing. I rang the non-emergency police number (101) and a couple of minutes later a Police transit van came up the road looking for them. I'd suggest it is therefore of concern to the police, if not a priority at busy times, and is probably worth bringing to their attention. I have no idea what they're doing - I assumed it was looking for scrap or other items to sell, as it seemed a bit blatant to be doing this in broad daylight, but they could equally have been sifting the paperwork. Either way, if you're not happy to have people coming onto your property in this way, I'd suggest reporting it. Seems like an opportune moment to plug these guys - http://www.sdcas.org.uk/ who operate some drop in centres in Southwark to help refugees and asylum seekers. They often take donations of old clothes, baby stuff etc so this is one way of helping those who are really in need.
  7. Emmaus is a fantastic charity with an outlet in Greenwich - whether you're looking to get rid of old items or buy furniture etc for your home - worth considering them. They'll pick stuff up as well - details here http://www.emmaus.org.uk/greenwich
  8. May not be exactly what you want, but Flickr gives you a terabyte of storage for free, you can upload your photos there, set them to private if you want, and you have a 1tb photo back up in this fancy 'cloud' everyone seems obsessed with.
  9. Windrush Tri club, based at Brockwell Park but runs training in various spots - http://www.windrushtri.co.uk/ they include training sessions in Brockwell Park Lido, an unheated outdoor pool, so if you're doing a tri outdoors it helps get you used to swimming in a wetsuit.
  10. Haven't used them personally, but know someone who has who said they were good - http://www.sendeancameras.co.uk/

  12. Have got EE broadband - seems to work fine most of the time, can be a bit jittery on iplayer at peak times, but as an eisting mobile customer it's very cheap. Just got one of these as it combines all the hard drive gubbins with a dvd player http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BYUGNCY/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  13. Shaun's DIY, opposite East Dulwich train station do camping gas refills - think they're closed on Sundays though.
  14. I switched to EE from BT Broadband about six months back. Have had no problems since, and it's cheap, which were the two things I was after. It's just standard broadband and free weekend and evening calls, but works fine for iPlayer, Netflix etc You might to look at http://www.uswitch.com/broadband/ as you can find some intro deals here which can be hard to track down from the official providers.
  15. Got mine from John Lewis for the two year warranty. I was a Mac newbie so the extra year's 'paranoid'cover was what clinched it for me. Always found John Lewis very good with customer care. Having said that, in 18 months, haven't needed it.
  16. This might be of interest to some - installed on your laptop and smartphone. Won't stop them being stolen, but may help with recovery/capturing whoever nicked it/bought it. http://preyproject.com/
  17. I used the 'contact us' form on their website to raise this issue. Had a call back from someone at Sainos telling me it was going to be raised with the 'area manager' for the store at his monthly review meeting. What comes of it, who knows, but might be worth a few more people trying to raise the issue with them centrally rather than telling people in store who doubtless have other things on their plate. Cycling has surely gone past the issue of it being 'a few nutters' using them - provided you ignore the vocal minority on either send of the pro/anti cycling argument - the Boris Bikes and the modest beginnings of cycling infrastructure around London support that. To be the first supermarket to provide secure facilities for cyclists to use could be valuable, when you consider how many bikes you can fit into the space taken by one car. I wouldn't consider pointing a camera at the area, providing a few more racks and better lighting as prohibitively expensive against getting a few more people into the store.
  18. Another vote for the outside of Dulwich Park, or various bits of Crystal Palace Park, or even a yomp through Sydenham Hill Wood for a bit of wildness.

  20. I used to live in a half house and the amount of noise coming through the walls was incredible. If it was night time you could hear people very clearly even if it was just a normal conversation. If your house is victorian you may find the only thing between you and the neighbours are two layers of thin, and very dry, lathe and plaster stuck over a thin wooden frame. I guess how seriously you need to treat the problem depends on how bad it is for you, and how long you intend to stay living there. In terms of soundproofing, I can't claim to be an expert, but what I did was fit wooden battens to the wall. In the gaps between the battens I fixed thick 'batts' or pads of insulation to the wall, then fixed two layers of thicker plasterboard called soundboard http://www.british-gypsum.com/products/plasterboard___accessories/gyproc_acoustic/gyproc_soundbloc.aspx over these. Once you add in dealing with skirting board, electrics, coving and plastering this was obviously quite a big job to do yourself, but fairly standard for builders I have thought. I was really happy with the results, the wall felt like the strongest thing in the house, and hardly heard anything through the wall. Felt a lot more like my home rather than one half lived in by the neighbours.
  21. Yes, very freaky. According to the twittetverse, there's a massive fire in north Greenwich and perhaps this is yelling us to close our windows. No verification of this.
  22. You can get refurbed Macs through the official Apple store, the benefit being they are 'legit', come with a one year warranty etc. http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/specialdeals/mac Downside is you could undoubtedly get them cheaper through other sources, Ebay etc. Also, I know someone who got a secondhand Macbook through these guys - http://www.scrumpymacs.co.uk/store/ and has had no complaints.
  23. Lordship Lane station, painted by Pissarro, 1871... hasn't changed much then. http://transpont.blogspot.com/2008/12/camille-pissarros-lordship-lane-station.html
  24. Is there no borehole data from that Thames Water extension to Honor Oak?
