  1. I just headed up (the side of) Rye Lane about 15mins ago. The atmosphere was getting tense, lots of groups of youths milling around at the bottom of choumert road, and someone was saying that "they are hitting the sorting office". Didn't stick around to see if it was true; turned around and had a swift march home.
  2. Anger / bad attitude, it's all the same really. It seems to have got to a level where it's like mass hysteria and people are looking for an outlet for their heightened adrenaline / excitement / stress, call it what you will. I'm glad we all have this little outlet here, otherwise who knows what we might do. Perhaps we should try to take our streets back? Anyone?
  3. I just spoke to a friend who's balcony looks over East Dulwich road, she reported seeing a "child, 12 at most" carrying a full shopping basket away from Tesco earlier.
  4. hubby on train from victoria has just reported that the train is not stopping at peckham rye due to a security alert
  5. Hi, i'm having a similar issue myself and have come across this article which I think offers advice for getting post-pinning insurance that is also not maddeningly expensive - http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2010/feb/08/subsidence-home-insurance-quotes-soaring Out of interest, is anyone aware of any subsidence on Idmiston Rd ?
  6. I think 850k for that amount of space, with good design and quality finish is not bad value at all. Bunny, you really don't get over 170m2 for 650k unless it's a fixer upper! I saw a very modern house on the market recently in a similar part of ED which was not much cheaper but was 30 - 40% smaller.
  7. According to my little chart from some subsidence advisory group or other, sycamores should be planted at over 17 meters away from your house in order to ensure they can't mess with your foundations. If you're in a block it may have considerably larger foundations than a single house, esp. if the house is old and the block is new - sorry, but personally i'd prefer to be you with a bad view than your neighbour with subsidence! Shame you weren't consulted - i think trimming them back can work as a solution to reduce root growth?
  8. A friend of mine who lives in the large period building at the end of Solway road which has been converted to flats has had a bit of trouble with a group of lads. Nothing as bad as your horrendous incident, but pretty antisocial - they sit on the private stairway leading up to the flats, blocking the way and often smoking weed. It's all a bit intimidating for her (or guests for that matter) when coming and going, they don't have the most delightful of demeanours when you ask to go by... Who's to say if they are the same kids though?
  9. "Go to my far more interesting opening thread "Dulwich Housing Market Lessons" for clearer insights" lol! Please all of you excuse my utterly ridiculous previous post. I am embarrassed and will not make another murmur, unless it is to spout my Economics 101 in an oh-so-working-class accent.
  10. We went with Foxtons for our house as we were planning on buying through them at the time and figured it would lubricate the process. In terms of valuations, not naming names, but we had 2 LL agents value higher than Foxtons - and they did go ahead and defend the lower valuation and didn't hike it up. Fair enough i thought ( after my initial surprise that they weren't the highest!) As far as Roy Brookes goes, i'd avoid them like the plague. As explained on this forum before, they very nearly had our purchase fall through due to their absolute incompetence.

    SPOOKS

Anyone interested in watching it being filmed? Don't watch it myself but all the crew are camped on Nigel Road, with filming apparently going to be happening around the White Horse pub and junction today.
  12. Chica, you know, i'd have not had much sympathy either before it happened, but the reason you don't think "begging hustler" as you say, when she first comes to the door is because she says "Hello, sorry to disturb you - i'm Lisa from number 29, i'm really sorry that we haven't met before; i've been meaning to pop round and say hi every time i walk past ...." ...and that is exactly what a neighbour does. Nice ordinary sociable behaviour. So the reason she's good is that the alarm bells only start ringing in your head once you've already placed the event in the meeting-a-new-neighbour category, and it's not pleasant to accept pretty quickly that you have to pull it out of that happy place and plonk it into the horrible someone-trying-to-con-me category. I wouldn't like to think i was someone who's initial assumption when a genuine neighbour comes round to say hi is "begging hustler".
  13. she was starting to well up at one point so she did seem desperate, even if the story was rubbish - she didn't have an obvious drug vibe though. She even shook my hand!
  14. I don't blame you in the slightest; in that situation i'd have done the same thing. I'm female and was home alone and only went for the "show me a bill" option because it seems to negate the situation whereby a confrontation could occur. Unfortunately she really was quite good at it - i can imagine rather a lot of folk being taken in by her. If anything she just slightly overplays the kiddy needing feeding part. I hope she doesn't read this and take that as a tip for her future acting performances.
  15. Has anyone had a woman come to the door asking for money for her electric meter? I just had my "neighbour" come and ask for ?6 so that she can heat the kids' dinner. I told her to fetch me a bill with her address on.... She introduced herself as Lisa, was in her early thirties i'd say, black, and quite tidy and pleasant (by which i mean she didn't start shouting at me when i started to pull a here-we-go face).
  16. I don't know if there is another thread relating to this that i have missed, but for those still interested, tesco have moved in to set up in this unit today. I was told by a chap working there that it should be open in 8weeks time.
  17. Thanks Mick, i'm commenting because i live there!
  18. I went in there tonight and must admit that the soup was indeed devine (and always is) and the wallpaper didn't look so bad in a evening setting...
  19. Police turned up in numbers this morning to conduct a raid of a house on Nigel rd, next to the "God Bless Hair Salon", to the delight of curtain twitchers such as myself. Guys in the full blue CSI jump suit have been going in and out all day. Police car is now parked outside and the officer says he will be there for the duration The police are being very circumspect about the nature of the investigation, although the officer said rather cryptically that it was to do with a problem within a local comunity of the area. Does anybody have any insider knowledge?
  20. As the Rye is my true local which i am very very fond of, i was a little concerned to hear that it was getting a refurb - what if they spoiled what is basically my third reception room? - and i really didn't think it needed one, rather liking the relaxed, slouchy, heavy drapes vibe. And what a surprise! Interior designer or no, it just looks plain old tacky to me now, what with the chrome, red leather chairs and silver flock wallpaper. There are some nice fabric covered chairs however which are lovely (but don't match).
