  1. We went with Foxtons for our house as we were planning on buying through them at the time and figured it would lubricate the process. In terms of valuations, not naming names, but we had 2 LL agents value higher than Foxtons - and they did go ahead and defend the lower valuation and didn't hike it up. Fair enough i thought ( after my initial surprise that they weren't the highest!)

As far as Roy Brookes goes, i'd avoid them like the plague. As explained on this forum before, they very nearly had our purchase fall through due to their absolute incompetence.

  2. Anyone interested in watching it being filmed? Don't watch it myself but all the crew are camped on Nigel Road, with filming apparently going to be happening around the White Horse pub and junction today.
  3. Chica, you know, i'd have not had much sympathy either before it happened, but the reason you don't think "begging hustler" as you say, when she first comes to the door is because she says "Hello, sorry to disturb you - i'm Lisa from number 29, i'm really sorry that we haven't met before; i've been meaning to pop round and say hi every time i walk past ...."

...and that is exactly what a neighbour does. Nice ordinary sociable behaviour.

So the reason she's good is that the alarm bells only start ringing in your head once you've already placed the event in the meeting-a-new-neighbour category, and it's not pleasant to accept pretty quickly that you have to pull it out of that happy place and plonk it into the horrible someone-trying-to-con-me category.

I wouldn't like to think i was someone who's initial assumption when a genuine neighbour comes round to say hi is "begging hustler".

  4. I don't blame you in the slightest; in that situation i'd have done the same thing. I'm female and was home alone and only went for the "show me a bill" option because it seems to negate the situation whereby a confrontation could occur.

Unfortunately she really was quite good at it - i can imagine rather a lot of folk being taken in by her. If anything she just slightly overplays the kiddy needing feeding part.

I hope she doesn't read this and take that as a tip for her future acting performances.

  5. Has anyone had a woman come to the door asking for money for her electric meter? I just had my "neighbour" come and ask for ?6 so that she can heat the kids' dinner. I told her to fetch me a bill with her address on....

She introduced herself as Lisa, was in her early thirties i'd say, black, and quite tidy and pleasant (by which i mean she didn't start shouting at me when i started to pull a here-we-go face).

  6. Police turned up in numbers this morning to conduct a raid of a house on Nigel rd, next to the "God Bless Hair Salon", to the delight of curtain twitchers such as myself. Guys in the full blue CSI jump suit have been going in and out all day. Police car is now parked outside and the officer says he will be there for the duration The police are being very circumspect about the nature of the investigation, although the officer said rather cryptically that it was to do with a problem within a local comunity of the area. Does anybody have any insider knowledge?
  7. As the Rye is my true local which i am very very fond of, i was a little concerned to hear that it was getting a refurb - what if they spoiled what is basically my third reception room? - and i really didn't think it needed one, rather liking the relaxed, slouchy, heavy drapes vibe.

And what a surprise! Interior designer or no, it just looks plain old tacky to me now, what with the chrome, red leather chairs and silver flock wallpaper.

There are some nice fabric covered chairs however which are lovely (but don't match).
