We are expat Aussies and bought a lovely old - but very dilapidated - Georgian house in Camberwell two and a half years ago. Since then, we have worked in stages, slowly bringing the place back to life, starting from a dark and dingy basement (now a light and airy one bedroom flat) right up to the fourth floor Victorian manse (now with revitalised bathroom and two bedrooms and the three floors in between, from electrics and wooden floors to painting and decorating the stairs. In all this time, we have worked with just one builder, Paul O'Brien, who has been in the local building business for four decades. Paul works with his son, Charlie, and together they provide all building services, from carpentry and specialist restoration of laven plaster to painting and decorating. They work closely with trade colleagues when electrics or specialist plumbing are needed. For these two men, nothing is too difficult, no problem insurmountable. They work creatively, honestly, punctually and are meticulous cleaning up during works. Most importantly, every time we have embarked on another round of works, their bills have been fair and always on budget. We are still working on our lovely old house - and they are still with us when we need them, step by step, bit by bit.
